AT&T-friendly Nexus One passes through the FCC

Rumor

nexus-one-fcc-label-ATT-compare

We told you earlier this month that the Nexus One would be coming to AT&T and we now have the first sharable shred of evidence that our source was spot on. Spotted emerging from the testing halls of the FCC is an unknown mobile phone with the FCC ID NM899110. For the geeky folk, the NM8 is the FCC Grantee code for HTC while 99110 is the model. People who rock a Nexus One and have a penchant for studying FCC labels would notice that the FCC ID for this mystery handset is only a single digit away from the FCC ID of the current Nexus One (NM899100) and would be quick to recognize that this mystery handset is most likely a kissing cousin to their T-Mobile-friendly handset. Without looking at the FCC documents, one might casually pass this mystery handset off as the upcoming Verizon Wireless CDMA version, but a quick perusal of the testing report reveals that the handset in question is rocking WCDMA bands I, II and V which are decidedly AT&T. Any Nexus One owners crawling on AT&T’s EDGE a bit peeved by this discovery?

This is not the Nexus One. This Is The HTC Bravo heading to AT&T

    • MountainDrew

Agreed, since the Bravo is basically a non-google branded Nexus One. All the specs are identical

      • BJones

And Also Because This is Not Sony Ericsson. HTC Doesn’t change Model#’s Just Because Its Heading To A Different Carrier.

      • DJ Megatron

Agree also. AT&T has yet to announce what their 5 Android devices will be, so in theory the Bravo could be one of them. With WMC coming up in a week or two, I wonder if there will be an announcement from HTC at that point. Can’t wait to find out.

    • Zach

Starting to believe that since it doesn’t say NEXUSONE on it.

    • BJones

Google has listed everyone on their site That are getting the Nexus 1. They would not let customers buy an Unlocked phone to use on At&t 3g if they Are releasing a 3g version of it.

      • mnm101

“They would not let customers buy an Unlocked phone to use on At&t 3g if they Are releasing a 3g version of it.”

        Are you serious?

Like Apple would not let customers buy millions of their wifi tablets, and then come out with a 3G version… and then one with a camera, and then one with the “S”… (3GS)…. and then one with HD….

        rrrriiiiiiiiggggghhhht

Cause after all, it’s not our money they’re after.

    • elijahblake

Look at the ID above the HUGE FCC letters, It says Nexus One…

So i believe it will be the Nexus One…

      • elijahblake

nevermind, i was looking at the Nexus One model.. Now i see that the new model doesn’t have the Nexus One name on it..

Maybe you guys are right.. If you are then i’m going to be dissapointed. I want a “Google Experience” phone without the manufacturers UI on it, since this keeps you from getting updates as quick..

I don’t think they’ll be perfect in 3 months time, but I do think vastly improved. As of right now, my service is ok, yea I do drop calls with my 3Gs, but not on my BB 9700! So o do think it has a lil to do wit the device and the carrier! Hey no network is perfect, not even Verizon. I’ve had them forever, and they have there issues also. However there ampin up there network also to handle data heavy devices that are droppin this year. I think it all comes down to what works better in your area. My friend says Sprint is the best, and I laugh at him cause it was terrible when I had them. All location related! All in all, looks to be a good year for releases on all carriers!

    • TomTpm

Sean76 – 100% correct. Everyone has some problems and it all depends where you live!

Congrates Sean – probably the most logical posting in a long time.

How about AT&T following T-Mobile’s lead and offering discounted plans for those with unsubsidized phones? Is that among the main reasons for buying an unlocked phone?

in Israel they are passing a law that all the cell companies can not sell any more locked phone.

  • QUESTION123

So this new variant will support AT&T 3G but it will NOT support Tmobile 3G, right?

    • QUESTION123

In other words, will this new device support both AT&T and Tmobile 3G bands within 1 physical device or is this just an AT&T 3G only version?

  • Rich

The N1 is still too costly at $529 unlocked. Lower the price to $399 and you would see massive adoption.

    • Bill Ko

Thats what will get me moving, wireless support for multiple carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, other) on the same device and a pricetag of $399 for an unlocked phone with no carrier contracts.

At $399, they may not be able to make them fast enough. If they keep the price over $400 more than a month, by the time they get any sales movement, it may be too late, other phones will be out there to snap up the market share before momentum is built up. Another Palm Pre Story unfolding…

Apparently BGR likes them enough to not ban them cause they’ve been around a for a couple weeks

  • NoReason

The lack of 3G coverage is AT&T’s biggest issue. They just don’t get what Verizon is saying. AT&T may have faster speeds, but what good is it when most of the customers get really poor performance or no 3G at all. AT&T just don’t care to upgrade their network, everyone wants to blame the iPhone for the slow speeds, when the truth is about 10% of the AT&T users have an iPhone, if 10% of their customers can cripple a network they should just close down now.

    • Chris

The truth is you don’t know what you’re talking about:

“Doesn’t care to upgrade their network” – $30 Billion invested in the network the last two years with another $19 billion planned for 2010.

“10% of the AT&T users have an iPhone” – There is no way you can know this because they don’t anounce it. What they did anounce is that 46% of their 65 million postpaid subscribers have smartphones. That means about 36% of all AT&T subscribers have a smart phone as we can assume that at about 2/3 of that are iPhones based on the numbers they are selling each quarter. 27% lift in smartphones being mostly iPhones would hurt any network.

I know you will probably try to defend your last statement by saying that is still only 24% of the subscribers, but the truth is it isn’t the whole story. Most of the country is not getting crippled. The problem in places like NY and San Fran is that 40%+ is on an iphone and 50-60% are on smartphones. That hurts any network.

Before you claim that Verizon or another carrier can handle it, know this. AT&T sold more Quick Messaging Phones (dumb phones with keyboards) in 2009 than all other US carriers sold smartphones combined. Think about that for a second.

Another thing to think about is that before the iPhone launched AT&T had twice the amount of Smartphones that any Verizon (2nd among US carriers). Since that time data usaged on their network has gone up over 4000%; most of that since iPhone 3G and app store launched. There is no logical business reason for any carrier to over build their network so much that it would be able to handle that lift. Now maybe they are over building more than they used to, but considering that the amount of data sent over all of the other carriers networks conbined is probably less that what the AT&T network gets hit by, I bet they would crumble under the pressure as bad if not worse than AT&T did. And if the iPhone originally went to Verizon they would be in much worse shape than AT&T is in now.

So before you start talking about “truth” make sure you have some facts to back it up. Some of my assumptions may be off, but the hard numbers back up many of them.

      • betchplz

Those numbers are not purely for AT&T wireless, only a fraction is for AT&T wireless.

You’re reading WAY too much into AT&T’s press releases. You sound exactly like one of them.

    • TomTpm

no you don’t get it — coverage matters where you live and go… Who cares abotu coverage in Idaho if you don’t go and live their..

The onyl advantage Verizon has is in some rural areas.. you are buying the hype, which is fine. The problem is when you claim that the ‘maps’ should drive the consumers buying patern, which is flat out silly.

As far as not caring – you are clueless, why would a company not care ot maintain future income.

Second, you don’t know what you are talking about as far as how many customer have iPhone..

Stop talking about what YOU don’t know as fact.

Gvie your email and i can send you a link by a 3RD party company that show AT&T ourperforming Verizon not only in speed (which by the way matters) but in coverage as well.

  • Andre Di Genova

Hopefully Canada gets this on Rogers/Fido/Bell as well. Would grab the current model for Wind if their coverage was better.

  • Cut Throat

    @ Chris

I agree, if we were to magically port all iphone users on at&T network to VZW for a whole day it would undoubtedly collapse. There is more going on than people realize. If you look at at&t’s network from an engineering perspective and how much data they host it’s absolutely amazing. VZW claims to be ready so does t-mobile for such a device. I call bullshit on that!!! They would collapse in record time. BTW i also gurantee at&t users are more data hungry and use more data than other smartphone users on other networks. With the exception of the problems they have finally admitted to in NY and SF it seems to provide a good experience for most people. Lets see whats going to happen. I’m predicting good stuff!

  • Sean76

Seriously, alot of hate geared towards AT&T! I agree with Chris on other carriers crumbling if they hosted the iPhone, or something just as equal- save it people, they have nothing on the network that trully compares as far as selling units go. However, they will all get there chance come summer time! Verizon is getting the Nexus, and will some where along the line release a version of the iPhone. And Tmobile is most likely getting the awesome HD2! 3 awesome devices. Let’s hold out on comments about who sucks, and who’s crumbling until we really see what everyone can handle. Every carrier will get there shot this Spring and Summer!

  • John

Shut up magnum. I’m sick of your retarded posts.

  • NoReason

@Chris, I never claimed Verizon’s network can handle it. All I said about verizon was that they offered more 3G coverage.
As for 10% AT&T they did state about 3 months ago that there was 7% of their customers using an iPhone, I adjusted it up as I’m sure there are more now.
“10% of the AT&T users have an iPhone” – There is no way you can know this because they don’t anounce it. What they did anounce is that 46% of their 65 million postpaid subscribers have smartphones. That means about 36% of all AT&T subscribers have a smart phone. – Now where did you get this? You tell me there is no way I would know that, but then turn around & backup what I said.
    46-36 = 10.
“The problem in places like NY and San Fran is that 40%+ is on an iphone and 50-60% are on smartphones. That hurts any network.” – Why separate the iPhone? So basically 90-100% in NY use smartphones. So again it’s not just the iPhone that is causing the issues. Like I said, the poor performance & lack of coverage is their biggest problem.
I am an AT&T customer, have no desire to switch to any other carrier. If they are going to make data plans mandatory, they better make the network capable of handling it. Any phone AT&T carries, that is worth buying is 3G capable, the 3G coverage should be there as well.

  • Foster

    @ NoReason

Said very well bro! I agree with you. If you are going to sell this “best 3G experience”, “fastest 3g network” bull crap then back it up. If you have ever noticed their commercials are based on vague facts. It is bad bc the normal consumer is tricked by it. It is actually kind of funny to me. I do agree though that the iPhone brings crazy data traffic to AT&T though. It is a great device also. I have a Droid currently and love it. I am interested to see what is in store for the next version of Android bc it has been stepping up pretty good. 2 of my friends have 3GS’s and they are actually a little jealous sometimes but there are also things I want from the iPhone so it goes back and forth. I really hope the next iPhone is a game changer bc Android is getting better fast. And as far as Verizon service it is the only one in my home town that gets 3G consistantly which is another reason I am with them.

  • TomTpm

magnum you are not a HATER? You post as magnum and Diabl0 anti-AT&T and Sprint stuff every day under multiple user names…

i have never called anyone this – but you are a liar, my friend.

  • Foster

I want AT&T and Verizon to have the same phones. That would be amazing. Then customers could pick which carrier works better for them and the right device. Good for AT&T to be picking up Android and Palm. So once they get Palm and Android they will have a great choice of phones. And if Verizon gets the iPhone they will have everything also considering that is the only phone they are really missing that is worth getting in my eyes.
