Last minute Apple tablet leaks: images emerge, books to cost $12.99-14.99, $1 per episode TV shows?

Rumor

apple-tablet-1

In the waning moments before Apple’s highly anticipated tablet event, a few last minute leaks are stirring up the excitement. First, we have some blurry pictures of a tablet device of approximately 9-10 inches in size running a version of the iPhone OS. The device is encased in a plastic housing, bolted down to a table and covered with a black drape. This cloak and dagger treatment is reportedly standard practice for any super secret Apple device so these images may indeed be the Apple tablet. Apple is also reportedly in last minute negotiations with book publishers and television studios to finalize pricing for its rumored tablet device. Apple is rumored to be pushing Hollywood to offer $1 per episode pricing on television shows in iTunes and is offering book publishers a pricing scheme that would set book prices at $12.99 to $14.99 for best sellers with a basement price of $9.99 for less popular books. Apple would reportedly take a 30% cut of all sales, leaving book publishers with a take home price of $10.49 or less. This could place them between a rock and a hard place with Apple offering a potentially larger audience with less revenue per book, or going with Amazon which offers greater revenue per book with its Kindle but may not have the reach and allure of this rumored tablet.

    If this is the picture then it was shown in Jack Bauer’s hand during last weeks “24″. Toward the end there was a scene where he was flashed holding some high tech gizmo to help save the day. Its a match for the your picture.

      1) $13 – $15 is pretty high for an eBook, unless that’s for new releases, with the price dropping over time accordingly (like in the case of physical copies). Sorry, but $10 is more than adequate for a product where you don’t get a physical copy, especially when the physical copy costs about the same (trade paperbacks), if not less (mass market paperbacks).

      2) $1 per episode TV shows is better than what’s available now on iTunes, so I guess it’s a pretty good value. Heck, a 5 minute song costs just about that much. Better value, by that standard.

        (why did my post come out as replying to richardb? Sorry, was meant to be its own “thread” or whatever.)

    Looks like the screws on the side are the samae that come on Microtech products.

  • grrr

    4G ftw!

    Where is the Verizon Iphone announcement? Funny how ATT iPhone fanboys don’t want it to come to Verizon? Why is that? Buyers remorse? It will come to Big Red..sooner or later.

    • Bubba

      Being a Verizon fanboy isn’t any better than being an AT&T fanboy.

      You are equally pathetic.

    I assume a live broadcast will be available here – appears to be the case:

    (Not that I give much damn about the Apple tablet myself. Just offering a possible feed source.)

    This will sell to people who have an excess of cash and are willing to carry yet one more non-pocketable gadget, but it’s not appealing from a convenience, features, or cost perspective.

    Seriously, this is a supersized iPod Touch-like mini-notebook/netbook. Hope the early buyers are happy with the cool factor because that’s about all this thing offers.

    I still don’t understand what the allure will be of reading a book on the backlit screen will be. I stare at a computer monitor for 8 hours or more at my job. E-Ink at least offers some reprieve on my eyes when I’m reading on it.

    @Chris, oh yeah, like so much computing happens outdoors. You people need to get real and know the facts. In spite of serious shortcomings in many of their products, they sell in record numbers and earn record profits. Case closed. Love or hate them, Apple is one of the most successful corps in all of history.

      We’re not all fair-skinned, sunlight hating heathens living in basements, OK? I do a fair amount of outdoor work. And isn’t the point of a tablet the portability factor…the ability to leave a dwelling? To go out amongst the masses and show your Apple logo to everyone and look down on those using HP and Lenovo and …

    I think the screws are just holding a temporary frame around the whole tablet to keep people from seeing the details of the real frame edges and transition and whatever else is on that frame.

    @DmanNJ,

    Wow, I didn’t know Apple gave you access to the device so you could review it. Thank God they did. Now I know everything about it. I should have known Applw would spend the last TEN years just to creat a big iPod Touch,

    you are an idiot

      Well, that’s really all this is…a big iPod Touch with 3G connectivity and less battery life.

  • crescentdave

    I think I should figure out why I just double posted :#

  • jarrett

    @chris,

    That is a little unfair. Never have I looked down on someone using a non-Apple product. I have looked down on products using Windows, but never the users. Hell you probably make fun of the window licking kids on the short bus too. You are one sick individual.

      I wasn’t speaking about you. Moreso about the general feelings exuded by typical Apple fans. I own a Macbook so don’t presume to judge me, good sir. I’m just not so sure that the iTablet/Slate/Pod TouchXL is the next big thing. Opinions are like buttholes, you know?

  • Tdot34

    hmm $12.99-$14.99 for an e-book, or get the actual book for $19.99… the price point was perfect for kindle, at nearly 50% or more off, Apple is just getting greedy. I will hope someone hacks it so we can get kindle ebooks to run on the Apple.

  • Alex

    Apples really brings out the best in ppl. If you don’t like a product, why talk so much shit about the company?

    Long live ANDROID!!!!

  • jarrett

    @chris,

    I can and can not agree about the Tablets success. Though that is only because we don’t know anything about it. Or, if there even is a Tablet (yes I know there is). All I am saying is let us see what we see.

    This will prove that Apple zombies will buy anything.

    This brings nothing new to the table. Plenty of other devices that already/will do the same thing, minus the abortion of iTunes and probably at 50-70% of the price.

    I can’t believe that the apple tablet is here now, and has been officially been stated. Honestly, months ago I really don’t give enough time for this gadget, but now, suddenly eveyrthing changes. Especially when I heard that this will be ‘yet the most important thing Steve jobs did’. More details: http://bit.ly/apple-tablet-details-and-history
