Google Voice web app updated for Pre and iPhone

News

Today, Google is rolling out a new version of their Google Voice web app, leveraging HTML5, which enables Palm Pre and Apple iPhone users to have a more rich user experience. We know, we know, it isn’t a native app… but the interface looks pretty darn good. The new web app facilitates all the functions you would expect out of Google Voice, you can: place calls, send text messages, read or listen to voicemails, and adjust your account settings. What we love about the web app as opposed to third party clients is that you can actually call out directly as opposed to “dialing” a number, and receiving a call back. The update should be available to everyone by the end of today, but it’s working for us already. Couple more screenshots and a video after the break!

      @phonejunkie30,

Are you crabby this moring? Do you need a hug?

      Settle down.

No, no, phonejunkie is right. This isn’t about Android since Android has a really good GV app that isn’t banned by the manufacturer or phone carrier.

What phonejunkie is really trying to say is that this is totally about Apple and iPhone and how Google has to invent a workaround (web based app) to avoid Apple’s banhammer.

Gotta be honest, the web app is currently nicer than the official Google Voice app on Android…

Android phones get all the Google goodies built in, including navigation.

good thing i have a jailbroken iphone and have the GV App. this web app sucks

  • RC

This is a good thing since I have to use my iPhone for 3 months before I go back to android on Verizon.

I have the jailbroken app, I actually find this web app better. It’s faster and has a better UI.

I tested it on my 3GS and it works almost as good as a native App. You have the option to add the App to the “Home” screen, which puts a nice icon in it next to all the other “native” Apps, and it can be selected by just tapping on it, as we do with any other App. When you tap the App icon, it launches the iPhone Safari browser and loads it. Excellent job Google! And no, I do not work for Google and my iPhone is not jailbroken.

It is a great Web App for sure. I would love to see them use the same iPhone shortcut method as Google Wave. That being the browser less window option for Web Apps. I do not recall the name of the function, but essentially it strips out the browser navigational aspects of Safari and only shows the Web App.

I would also LOVE some one to design a Chrome Extension using this new Web App. More or less an extension that displays the site in an iframe.

Uh, no native app …it’s ok but why does it dial out on some strange 3rd number?

  • Henry S

YES STICK IT TO THE MAN GOOGLE !

mean while — Google is collecting all your personal info… where you call , when you call, if oyu call LD…. i guess that doens’t bother Goolgle Fanboys…

Imagine if Verizon, AT&T or tMobile did that??? You would be outraged…

I have a jailbroken iPhone 3G and use the GV mobile app. This work-around is good for those who don’t have a jailbroken phone, but as is always the case, the app provides for a better experience.

Wonderful :) Finally I can use google voice on my iPhone. I have to agree that as well as being easy to use, it it reasonably peppy.

While it is too bad that Apple saw fit to do what it did, it is good that google has released this “web app” which may be as good as it gets in replicating the original iPhone app’s functionality.

That sure looks awfully spread out….IS THAT THE iTABLET?????

  • blah

    Go Google!

It’s a nice web app. Perhaps if Apple released their web app framework it could be even better. Apple uses their own webapp framework to build it’s online iPhone user guide (check the bookmark for iPhone user guide)

*yawn* been doing this on my BlackBerry since 2009.

    GoogleVOice is great, works fine!!!
…who cares about they collect your data, all carriers do this, is a difference between collect and publish!!!

That’s what google do, get information to use as product.
    Thanks Google, one more time!!!

Utilizzando i comandi vocali web precedente google, posso scegliere un num diverso squillo del telefono quando si chiama con la voce di Google. Ma con questa web app, sempre suonare il telefono cellulare, che non è desiderabile quando si è in un paese straniero.

I am having the same problem. it’s dialing out a strange number which is showing in my history. usually it would show my google voice number as an incoming number (which is one of my a-list numbers.). WTF!!
