Apple reported its financial results for Q1 2010 which ended December 26, 2009 and the results were nothing short of impressive. Apple posted its all time highest quarterly revenue, its all time highest quarterly profit and when annualized, these numbers will push Apple into a $50+ billion per year company. The dollar figures are so impressive they don’t require an explanation, so we will let the numbers speak for themselves:

  • Revenue of $15.68 billion ($11.88 billion in Q1 2009)
  • 58% of revenue derived from international sales
  • Net quarterly profit of $3.38 billion or $3.67 per diluted share ($2.26 billion, or $2.50 per diluted share in Q1 2009)
  • Gross margin of 40.9 percent (37.9 % in Q1 2009)
  • $5.8 billion generated in cash

Sales of Macintosh computers and iPhones went through the roof in Q1 2010 with Apple selling 3.36 million computers and 8.7 million iPhones, representing a 33% unit increase for Macintosh sales and 100% unit growth for the iPhone when compared to Q1 2009. The only blotch on an otherwise stellar performance was the iPod which sold 21 million units in Q1 2010, an 8% unit drop from the same quarter last year. Estimates for Q2 2010 remain equally as optimistic with the Cupertino company expecting another quarter of impressive revenue that will top out at an expected $11.4 billion. And oh yeah, Steve Jobs said, “The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.”

The revenue from apps must be insane.

I’m not really a fan of Apple, but you gotta give credit when its due. Can’t argue with those numbers.

  • Who?

Why does Apple’s first 2010 fiscal quarter take place entirely in 2009?

    • Tdot34

Because the Christmas sales rush gives them huge cash flow for the rest of the year. A fiscal year can start on any day the company wishes.

    • Tom

The fiscal year designation is based on when their fiscal year ends. In this case Apple’s fiscal year starts on October 1, 2009 and ends September 30, 2010. Their first quarter for fiscal year 2010 is October-December 2009.

Good time to offer stock options in lieu of cash dividends. no need to hoard all that cash. More than enough for R&D

  • azboricua

Atleast they didn’t fire a ton of people and be surprised they made record profit. I would be pissed if I got fired yet my company says at the end of the year “we made the most money EVAR!!!!!”

If you think that’s impressive, check out Exxon Mobil’s quarterly revenue and profits. 3 Billion profit is an bad quarter for that company.

        Comparing apples to oranges.

      • tim

Not relevant. Exxon’s profit margin is around 7%. Apples is around 15 to 16%. Much better to be in Apple’s business than in the oil business.

      • Phil

Actually their margin was closer to 41%. From the statement:

“Gross margin was 40.9 percent, up from 37.9 percent in the year-ago quarter.”

Not surprising when you consider it only costs $170 to build a 32GB iPhone…

      • StevenGlansburg

And it’s all because George Bush is evil and in bed with the oil companies, right?

  • ljp

The 100% iPhone growth is a little deceptive since last year’s quarter a major slide in sales for the iPhone.

With an analyst consensus of 9.1 million, the iPhone numbers are soft. The Mac sales and margins are the real story as the Mac continues to be the driver for Apple.

I like Apple products, but don’t consider myself a diehard fanboy since I like to try other things as well, but thats impressive. Stay tuned for Wednesday….

  • AuburnTiger

Good job Apple. Still not getting any Apple products though. Continue the innovation/competition.

  • Bustafone

I bet the Nexus One cut a little bit into their sales.
The iPhone is no longer the only hot toy in town.
And this only the beginning, get ready for an avalanche of android high end devices.

    • Goona

Yes by selling a staggering 20 000 units, yeah it really hurt the iphone.

    • QL

yeh, i’d like to believe the Nexus One is finally competition for the iPhone, but it’s just not. Then again it’s not being sold globally yet, whereas the iPhone is AND the iPhone has built a ridiculous following in all those markets too. People that had the preivious gen, and upgrading to the newer version.
So you can’t really compare units sold, but I do think there’s a mad amount of really hot android phones on their way soon (like HTC Bravo.. everything the Nexus is with Sense which means multitouch! – something the Nexus really should have), and winmo7 might make for some really interesting options..

    • Carmen

I don’t believe the Nexus One was for sale yet. The quarter ended the day after Christmas.

      • Goona

Even if it was for sale, they sold 20 000. I doubt that 20 000 would have done any harm to the iphone.

    • Moosebump

HTC is a good barometer of the success of Android and their sales were down 13% in Q4. They probably would have been shipping the Nexus One before the end of the quarter so it clearly didn’t help.

  • bob

Well… the ipods just got a nice kick in the balls… lol

  • Diabl0

Fanboys eat that! I can’t believe others are keep saying Apple is going on a turmoil well in fact their growth keeps getting better and better.

Oh Hai! and this will go on a yet another exponential growth once the apple tablet and their iPhone 4GS unveils. Seeing iPhone going to Veriz, is such an opportunity for apple to earn that gift-horse. More iPhone 4G and Apple tablet details: http://bit.ly/iphone-4g-apple-tablet-details

    @Who?,

fiscal yr ends in oct. any company with all that cash sitting in their checking account is a no brainer. Apple is a great investment at whatever price.

So much money from Americans and there love for silly (mostly useless) apps. I don’t see the Iphone doing well anywhere but the USA.
Windows Mobile, Symbian and Android will continue to rule outside the USA.

In most of Europe and Asia the Iphone is more of a Girl phone then a day to day Business power-house. Just like the Automatic gears the US have there own persy way of doing things.

Times have changed in a strange way, once the USA was the one with the Shovle in its hands and ready to get dirty today the tables have turend and now it’s the turn of Asia.

    • Goona

I guess you must have missed how well the well iphone is doing in Australia, Japan, UK, France, Germany and other places. Yeah all those places are in the US.

  • http://www.thedigitante.com Andy – The Digitante

Not surprising that iPod sales are off. The iPhone is obviously cannibalizing iPod sales, but considering the long-term revenue Apple is getting from AT&T on the deal, no complaints there.

As a shareholder, I peed in my pants a little.

  • jarrett

    @boomKABOOM,

That may be the bumbest comment ever. If you had read the release (which you didn’t) you would have learned that 58% of the Q1 was from international sales. Quit being an idiot and just acknowledge that Apple is the most well run company on the planet. $40 billion in cash, $0 in debt.

    cheers

    @Bustafone,

So, your hope is that 50 devices will unseat 1 device? Worked in PC’s right? Why not phones? Well, it won’t work in phones because two months after you bought that “fastest ever phone”, another company comes out with the “fastestest everest phone” and so on and so fourth. Then you have to factor in the contract time period, integration (which is important to the major “majority”) and available services.
Android will be available on a lot of devices but will never see dominance.

    cheers
