Sony Ericsson reports Q4 losses, but is slowly picking up the pace

News

Things aren’t looking so pretty at Sony Ericsson as the handset maker a little while ago posted its fourth-quarter earnings showing a loss of $270 million, pre-tax. Of course, this should come as no surprise to anyone since SE’s earnings reports the past few quarters, six to be exact, were just as disappointing. The company also recently had major layoffs and restructuring the past few months. However, SE is remaining cautiously optimistic for 2010. While other manufacturers are expecting a big rise in the cell phone market in 2010, SE sees things a little more modestly. Since smartphones and high-end devices are Sony Ericsson’s overall weakness right now by comparison to Apple, HTC and BlackBerry, we’re thinking that there is a lot riding on the XPERIA X10 with Android due out very soon.

The timeacape ui looks amazing. Someone please port it over to the Droid

I’m not convinced the X10 can do for SE what the Droid did for Motorola and the Pre for Palm. They seem to be beyond a lifeline extending device at this point.

so, if things don’t go well, all visitors and staff will be directed to the left: “The Poor House” instead of the Reception

how soon is very soon, bg? I’m on AT

Sony Erickson needs to following things…
    1. Get rid of your stupid Cards and non-standard chargers on cellphones. The days of Sony is over. It died with blu-ray and playstation 3.

    2. How do you expect to be successful in this business without being innovative and creative? Look at apple, google and samsung. They are much more successful because they keep changing and updating their softwares.

    3. Sony Erickson phone is harder to use than just about every phones out there. Their menu is not very simple and it is confusing.

PS: This loss is just the beginning. Sony is not like what they used to be 10-20 years ago. Samsung is killing them in TV and other competitors are killing them as well. The competition is getting steep and customers have less money to spend every year. They will be more picky. Personally, I would not be surprised if sony goes out of business in next 20 years because they always come up with things that would not be industry standard. Look at UMD, Blu-ray and their memory card. They just plain suck.

& BlackBerry Bold, Using micro/mini USB and miniSD allready happened with their Xperia line, and its already trickled down to some of their feature phones.

That is, SE started the transition over a year ago with the X1.

I wouldn’t say Sony is out of the game just yet, they still have a large following due to their quality products. But Sony Ericsson mobile phone business, thats a different story. Smartphones have never been SE’s strong suite and I think it maybe too late for them to recover unless they get lucky like moto and produce something as successful as the Droid/Milestone. I have a feeling that SE is pretty much done and in 2011 they will go under.

    Droid does…

  • Chris

Well near death experiences have worked so far with Moto and Palm. Maybe this is the push SE needs to get its act together.

Amen to the person mentioned their stupid proprietary memory card. With their phones less than popular today who will want to use those cards. Everytime i want to try a sony phone it’s like.. not this shit again why must you make everyone use your stupid card?!?! that’s why i opted for another brand. Is there any other cellphone maker out there using their card? NO! The answer is NO, noone but you that’s why you’re left behind. Also about the charger. It looks stupid with that big knob sticking onto your pretty phone. It’s like puting an ugly ass spoiler on a nice car.

  • kl

..don’t know why it was published but let’s continue with the charger. I mentioned how it looks stupid (so is the iphone’s) now let’s talk about why it sucked. The piece of crap engineering which is rare from Sony, always breaks! Those 2 stupid rubber prongs always fucking breaks and what’s worse is they know how to piss you off: they are always broken INSIDE the phone charging port so you cannot use another charger unless you use a twizer to pick those 2 bastards out. Tell me what kind of phone maker that refuses to fix their phones / change their charger after all these years and continue to insist the users to accept their memory card and not expect to die? Maybe im a little blunt but yeah they do have problems and it needs fixing before they can hope to recover.

does anyone buy X10 with an outdated display and 65k colors ?!!!!!!!!!! it`s a big mistake !

    • Will

Let’s not put out wrong information; the only reason the X10 has a 65K color display is because the current iteration runs Android 1.6 (though it’s been widely stated that the X10 will be getting the 2.0/2.1 upgrade at some point). The hardware isn’t what’s limiting the colors, it’s the OS. The display on the X10 is far from outdated.

In addition, is there another Android device on the market that has an 8.1 megapixel camera with flash? To my knowledge only the Nexus One currently uses the Snapdragon processor at 1Ghz… Sounds like (once updated to 2.0 at least) the X10 would be pretty cutting edge, as long as they release it before Motorola or HTC can release another Snapdragon Android handset.

Yes, maybe you`re right, but i couldn`t find a trusted source that confirm 16M color on X10 .
another problem is delay! i`m sure that X10 coming after HTC Bravo and Archos 5 phone tablet ,
consider Archos phone tablet with 1Ghz Cortex-A8 processor that`s more powerful than snapdragon and a 4.3 inches AMOLED display with 10mm thickness, which one do you prefer ?
X10 is very beautiful but this delay will kill this phone!

        Sorry for my bad english.

they need to make pure multitasking non touch smart phones at par with Nokia s60 rd edition, you cant have market share based on flash based feature phones and demanding higher prices. listen Samsung, Moto, SE, LG and company.

  • RJ

why does it say, “poor house” on the SE billboard? lol..

  • Felix

I am no stranger to spending top dollar on a phone (E90… N97…. N900) I have been looking for something from SE which peeked my curiousity and the X10 did it, BUT!!!! For $1000.00
    wtf SE????
