Simple fix will cure Nexus One 3G connectivity issues?

JkOnTheRun has stumbled upon a simple fix that may help fix poor 3G connectivity in the Nexus One. The fix is drop dead easy — all you need to do is go into the options for Mobile Networks under the Wireless & Networks heading in settings, select Network operators, wait for the Nexus One to scan for service, click on the choice to Select Automatically (do not select T-Mobile or AT&T), the phone will register itself on the network and voila! Your 3G connection should be improved. A handful of people are reporting that they are seeing 3G connections in areas where they used to have EDGE. If you have a Nexus One and are tired of poor 3G reception, give this fix a whirl and let us know if it works for you.

This simple fix did not work for me in Southern California. I still get Edge in areas that are labelled as 3G areas.

I will admit that the iPhone is a great phone. Only due to the fact that it’s OS is based from one that Apple has been refining for 15-20 years. Android has been out, what, 2? Give it time! I was a die hard BB user and switched to Android with the My Touch. I hated it at first. But now I love it! I can customize it, I can move the icons around and I can even mod it with out “breaking the law” The iPhone (although a great phone) will always be just an iPhone backed by this hatred for anything different and socialist attitude apple and mac users have! If its not an apple then your just wrong! What… you use a ….PC! Frankly I thought more highly of you. I’m sorry but I feel it better if we just part ways now. Just…go! Don’t tell me I’m wrong cuz its happened to me.
If you have an iPhone, be happy! Be content being a lemming! Please continue following the rest of the sheeple around the apple farm! Us android users will watch you from out side the fence chew cud all day while we find new and exiting ways to be different from the rest!

You missed a few key points there sport… The iPhone OS is loosely based on OS X which is really a Unix distro with a pretty GUI. Apple has only used OS X since 2000 (that would be a little over 9 years). Android is a Linux distro that is also based on Unix. The OS is not to blame here. It is the application that rides on the OS (the wireless phone bit) that is the problem. I own both phones but it boils down to this: Android = Fun hackers OS, iPhone = Refined stable OS.

Geez — i bet if it was a iPhone or something that was not from google, then there would be daily uproar. But it’s nice you give Google a pass for building sometihng that well – isn’t Goolge like…..

my iPhone’s reception is still fine. never had to do any tweaking.

Why did the put a roller ball instead of a trackpad on this phone?

have you used an optical trackpad before? I think they suck… Plus it doesn’t lite up for notifications.

My phone had an issue where it locked into EDGE and didn’t want to jump off… I did the described “FIX” but clicked on T-Mobile and it fixed that issue. But I still get wack 3G coverage, and I still have times where it jumps off 3G for no reason… this phone is awesome, but it still needs an update.

My nexus one hasn’t had any problems connecting or disconnecting with T-mobile’s 3G :-)

There has been a lot of hype and tension erupted after the unveiling of the nexus one. Today, we are seeing some of the errors and glitches that a future user may want to look before buying the N1 phone. As they said, 530 USD has never became cheap. Now I experienced a little different issue, what appears to be happening is the phone is shipped in the automatic mode, which makes it try to connect to ATT edge if the T-Mobile edge is a lesser signal, during that time the phone would be off the network until ATT rejects the connection. So by selecting T-mobile the phone will no longer attempt to connect to ATT.
This seems to be working great for me, at my desk before doing this change the phone was constantly switching from HSDPA(3g) to edge, then offline. So far for the past 2 days it has been working great on 3g at my desk.
I also wrote a little app called Cell Viewer for viewing the signal strength over time it’s in the market or http://www.lasvagrants.org/.

This did not work for me as stated …..

My original problem was the same : 3G to Edge to 3G as many have stated.

HOWEVER, comparing the nexus one settings to my HTC MyTouch settings, I found one small difference, and making the following change seems to have made a difference for me:

    Menu –> Settings –> Wireless & Networks –>
Mobile Networks –> Access Point Names –> TMobile US –>
Authentication type –> Then select “None” (was not set explicitly by default)

I will keep a close eye on this (has been good for the last day or so every chance I got to check) and will keep everyone here posted on new findings

    Hope this is helpful!

For me this is the last problem I’m trying to solve with the Nexus. I’m going back to my iPhone.

The hardware buttons are out of focus, the battery lasts less than a day, the reception did not improve after trying this workaround – this is just too much.

I really tried using it for a month, but I guess it’s just not good enough for my typical use.

    Here’s my entire review:
