22-inch touch screen Apple iMac on the way?

General

touch-imac-thing

Details are scarce, and, as with most Apple grumblings, the rumor factor is sky high on the rumor Richter scale. The Chinese paper Commercial Times is reporting that Apple has signed a deal with Korean company Sintek Photronic to provide touch panels for a 22-inch, full touch screen iMac. The Times also cites a deal with long time partner Quanta for production of the new product, predicted to be released in 2010. Now, none of this has been substantiated, but we’re happy to report on an Apple rumor that doesn’t involve the word “tablet.” Hopefully we’ll find out on or around January 27th!

All the better to run iPhone apps on the desktop like widgets!

Hmm- if Apple wanted to keep this secret they would probably not inform the president of the OLED corporation of their plans, especially with his big mouth. I still think it’s a good possibility that we’ll see a premium model of OLED and here’s why: http://tastyslate.com/2010/01/12/apple-tablet-will-live-or-die-by-its-screen/

if this is true and the islate or whatever doesn’t disappoint, I see two new macs in my house. hell, the touchscreen ac my wife has been asking for something like it for the past year, but from mac not hp or Sony. could they make it bigger though, say 37″, would fit nice on my wall and stream apple tv to it. that’d be sweet.

Well, that looks a little uncomfortable.. Typing straight up with fingerprints all over your view…? Fail.

Maybe if I gain 400 pounds it will fit in my pocket..

    • Grundel

Pants are worn to be form-fitting. If you gained 400 pounds from your current weight, they would fit your 400+ pound figure. Therefore, you wouldn’t be able to fit the new iMac screen into pants suited for a 400+ pound figure any more than you could fit an iMac screen into pants that fit your current frame.

The only way you could fit an iMac screen into your pocket would be if you wore pants at your current weight that are suited for a person that weighs 400 pounds more than you.

HP has been making this same type of touchscreen computer for years now. Nothing new.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Apple were to get into the touch desktop market, which is pretty much garbage and lacks efficiency and functionality.

If this is true I doubt it Apple will make it look like a giant iPhone as the leaked photo above shows. I call fake. Why would an iMac need a giant home button and 3G access?

    • Andrew Munchbach

Does “fake” really need to be called on this graphic? I took the original iPhone and slapped an iMac stand on it. #isuckatphotoshop

I think it’s legit. Though the lock/unlock button on the upper left side would be around 8 inches.

Hmm, maybe it’s not real after all.

        thats what she said

        This picture is freaking hilarious.

Maybe I should have put that new sarcasm punctuation mark on my comment. Imagine how hard it would be to find headphones to fit the 3.5cm jack shown above.

Apple will have limited function with any type of touch screen in relation to an iMac or a desktop monitor. If you own an HP system that uses a touch screen monitor you know why a person would never want one. I mean, other than the fact that the system uses windows. The idea is fun in concept, but horrible to actually use. Apple may use some form of touchscreen keyboard/mouse type product in the coming years but you can through the idea of a touch only display (iMac or otherwise) right out the window.

  • jonathan

I really don’t know how good of an idea that is. I don’t even know anyone who bought one of those HP touchscreen ones.

An all touch mac will not happen. Who is gonna type in that awkward position all the time?

I don’t know what im talking about, lol. So im gonna stop writing now and kinda just go do something constructive like maybe…sleep? ya, sounds good to me. good night ya’ll.

With a touchscreen tablet, a nice stand, and a bluetooth keyboard, you could do a lot.

I played around with one of the Asus eeeTop touchscreen computers and it was a pretty good experience for a netbook level computer once I stopped trying to find the mouse.

The stand is going to be key to this. I wonder if Apple has enough hardware/design mojo to integrate a sturdy adjustable angle kickstand into a tablet. With no keyboard, the guts could be arranged to give it a convenient centre of gravity.

If you got the right angle and gave the screen a good matte treatment, an onscreen keyboard could work.
