Nexus One sells 20,000 units in first week?

Nexus-One-Flurry-Chart-Week1

According to analytics firm Flurry, the Google Nexus One sold an anemic 20,000 units in its first week of sales. When we first looked at the data our initial thoughts were that sales may have been hindered by the Nexus One’s availability on a single network at time of launch. However, when we saw that the myTouch 3G, also available exclusively on T-Mobile at time of launch, sold 60,000 units in its first week, we started to think again. The chart also compares the N1′s sales figures with those of the Motorola DROID, 250,000 in week one (with a rumored $80M advertising budget), and, unfairly, with the iPhone 3GS, 1.6 million in week one (the iPhone was available in many countries and many networks at time of launch). What does this mean for Android? To be completely honest, not very much. It was however a very disappointing launch for the first of many, many Android powered phones by HTC and Google this year, especially with Google pumping out one of biggest AdWords campaigns we’ve ever seen.

Why would it sell more than 20000? It’s good phone but there’s a choice of Other Android phones.

      Maulik,

I think people overestimated how badly users of existing Android phones (G1, myTouch) would want and/or pay for a “superior Android experience” as provided by the Nexus One’s improved hardware.

Apparently folks are just fine with the hardware they have now and not willing to shell out $529 + Early Termination of their existing contracts or $2300 (total cost of the $180/T-Mobile 2-year agreement) for the new device.

It’s appear right now is really *techy*… an unlocked, Android device FROM Google… that doesn’t sound like the sort of thing my parents would ever know about. Much smaller market than what the iPhone was targeting — everyone.

The main problem with Nexus One is you can use it on only one network in the United States!!Big mistake not putting AT&T 3G band in this phone. No one is going to pay over 500 dollars to use the phone on AT&T 2G!!!!!!!!!!!DUMB GOOGLE,DUMB!!!!!!!!

Ok so maybe its me but i think Apples sale are disappointing as well. Really 1.6 million in 8 countries? I was expecting double that amount tbh. Also, 20k in sales for the nexus 1 and it was ONLY available online, with one kind of contract (is the contract thing right) and for 1 carrier. Does anybody know apples first week sales when it first came out? Not the 3g or 3gs just the plain 1st gen iphone. Everytime i look i get different numbers like 3 million, 53k, 1million, 400k. Can anyone get me reliable number on this?

my bad i forgot to add that while googles sales were poor but when you consider things it was actually quite decent.

If google wanted to sell more phones, they should have sold nexus one through T-mobile stores instead of controlled sale on it’s website. I would have been one of the buyers, now I might buy Moto Droid and switch to verizon.

The comparison is unfairly weighted in favor of the iPhone 3Gs.

iPhone had a solid history and customer base anxious to upgrade to the next generation of the phone.

The 1st week comparison should have been against the 1st generation iPhone, or at least 2nd generation, giving credit to the ~one year history of Android.

Oh and there arent millions of android users dying to upgrade from their pathetic G1′s and My Tough 3G’s? They arent dying to upgrade from Android 1.5 and 1.6 to 2.1?? You’re just full of you know what.

Also, surveys have shown that the huge majority of launch time 3Gs buyers were new customers, not upgrade customers.

      • Rich

Well I did say comparing to the 2G iPhone might be a more fair evaluation, but you were probably too excited about the opportunity to slam Android or praise the iPhone to to knowledge that so you just rushed ahead with a d-bag comment. Nice.

iPhone 2g sold like 200,000 units in the FIRST DAY.

iDon’t think you can extrapolate such vast prediction from just a week of observation with Nexus One’s performance — It won’t be an AVATAR “that’s for sure” but certainly won’t be on a GIGLI fiasco. It will fall on the mediocre side.

In which we can be certain that google will do something to alleviate the situation (I’m talking about improving the android and making it more competitive with Apple)

In the end, the only thing that’s certain is uncertainty, but my answer remains still. Google N1 will fall on between.

Those numbers show why Android will never be an iphone killer, even IF it was a better OS (which it clearly isnt). If you’re a developer would you write an app for iphone with 35-40 million users or Android with 1.5-2million users??? HMMMMM lets see… limit my self and my revenue stream to a small pittance in the smartphone marketplace or go big?

This is the FIRST google phone sold directly by them. Did the first Iphone well its first few weeks? This is the 3rd iteration of the iphone so you can expect it to alot better since it has had time to garner a large user base. Give google some time…..Im sure the Nexus Two will be alot better and sell more units than the current phone.

    that’s amazing

Nexus One is an awsome device. Lets hope they put up an app store with lots of decent and cool apps.
Thats one of the little things in which apple beats every other company. The app store.
I think it’s because they are only selling in 4 countries.

  • MrsD

I for one need to actually test drive it, u know, in my hands. Who buys something without checking it out first. BUT I STILL WANT IT!

  • SexusOne

How could it possibly surprise anyone that the Nexus One suffered from weak sales? Sure it is THE best phone on the market today but sales will definitely suffer when you can only get the phone online. Make it available at T-Mobile stores and I guarantee that sales will go up. Also a bit of advertising would have helped 1st week sales. Only the geekiest of the geeky have gotten the N1. Sales will pick up after those that let the geeky take the plunge see how amazing this phone is and jump aboard.
