Netflix streaming coming to the Nintendo Wii this Spring

Netflix and Nintendo are teaming up to bring Netflix’s streaming media service to the Nintendo Wii this spring. In order to actually get some streaming content going, Wii owners will obviously need to have a broadband internet-connected Wii and a subscription to a minimum $8.99 Netflix plan. Similar to the PS3, the Wii will not be an embedded solution and will require a Netflix application disc which must be inserted in the Wii while accessing the Netflix content. Wii owners ready to jump on board can sign up now to receive additional information and reserve an application disc at Netflix’s website. The disc is free and will ship this spring when the service launches.

I knew it was just a matter of time before Nintendo got into the Netflix streaming. I already have it streaming on my Xbox360, PC/Mac and PS3. Its nice to have all those options.

It would be really nice if they would implement the DRM stack in Moonlight so it could be streamed to PCs running Linux as well.

This is great news! Now I can finally talk my dad into dropping $199.99 for the console that does so much!

This is great news… but I wonder if you will be able to stream HD content like the xbox or PS3? I am pretty sure the Wii isn’t capable of HD output. That would be a deal breaker

As far as HD goes – I don’t think the Wii has enough umph to even process it. At least that was my experience with Homebrew. It barely gets along playing DVDs. Perhaps Netflix will have a more efficient decoder?

No, I don’t believe that this will be HD, at the best a Wii is capable of ED. I guess if that’s all you have it’s worth it.

The Wii is capable of 480p correct?

Still, not a bad option. Everyone does not have HD 1080P and even the major broadcast networks aren’t “all HD (full HD) all the time”. This includes sports.

Whew, its finally nice to be in a topic without any anti-Apple or anti-droid comments. Netflix is doing it right, with access to movies on game consoles, PCs and Blu-ray players too. The only thing I hope for is the ability to stream a recent release movie, instead of waiting for it in the mail. Maybe someday that would be feasible.

This is crap, they’re working on movie rentals for the Wii? Why not the Droid or iPhone? Nintendo needs to kick out a phone, I believe it would be the most epic phone EVER!
      Nintendo > Apple + Google

(Totally sarcastic if you didn’t pick up on that)

Can’t wait to try it out, I haven’t gotten the 360 or PS3 yet, so this would be one of the few reasons to keep my Wii now, thanks Netflix!

Yay I can finally get some netflix action

  • Rob

No HD on a Wii, why would people buy this?

  • Sparky37

480p sounds horrid on my plasma!

    9$ is gr8 for a month

The wii doesn’t even play DVDs. The graphics of the wii will not make this a big hit. In fact, my guess is it will fail.

I personally love all this functionality being added to game consoles. My 360 gets an insane amount of use since I added netflix. Hd or not, it will be great to have stuff on demand from your wii. Bummer about having to have a bootdisc for it tho, but since its free, no harm :D

This is pretty sweet. I was on the fence about renewing my xbox live subscription once my free trial was up but HD or not I think this is a nice cheap alternative as I don’t have a PS3.

If anyone read Wired mag a month or two ago, the Netflix people are trying to put Netflix capability in EVERYTHING, including directly into TV firmware. This is just a next step. Good for them.

However, since the Wii can only put out composite video, it wont be good for home theaters. The kids bedroom, maybe.

1st DVDs(via homebrew via a leftover ios command),and now Netflix. What’s next for my white paperweight? Don’t take that the wrong way….I like the Wii,its just that MOST games(Read:not New Mario Bros.) on it now are crap.
