BGR Survey: Android Time!

android-robots-green

We thought it would be a great idea to ask you guys (and girls) the things you love most about your Android devices, and also what you might not care for. We’ve linked the survey below and will post the results after we’ve received a decent amount of entries! This will be fun…

Mac OS buffer overflow exploit awaits Apple users..

How does this relate to Android…?

  • D.J.

Will be interesting to see the results. I love Android, the openess and integration of Google services make it great. Although I think now that Android has enough features and now needs some polish. There should be a feature freeze while they polish it. Make it faster, fix little bugs, and they need to take a little tigher control over the App Market to improve quality and polish. Not Apple level Gestapo BS, but some quality control. Spreading some money around to developers could help too.

Also, there has to be some way to make sure that phones get the latest versions of Android in a timely manner so that we don’t have problems with phones not being able to run some apps. I think giving phone manufacturers money for doing this is one way, and making efforts to not introduce new, major APIs until major version updates (x.0 rather than 2.x releases)

Interesting to see the results, sure. But the survey misses across the board. I opted to pick the best available option rather than answering “other” to each question. Part of the beauty of Android is the diversity of experience. My mom has a G1 and she’d probably say her favorite aspect of Android is her Lady Gaga ringtone. My brother has a G1 and he might say his favorite aspect is freedom of choice from the industry standard blackberry or iphone. I might say of my Nexus One that I love the ability to make of my phone whatever it is that I want. You ask an iphone user what s/he likes best and the answer is either itunes or a million apps. Great. You have a phone number attached to an mp3 player that syncs to your computer but can’t make calls. Ask a blackberry user what s/he likes best and it’s that s/he can get work and personal email at the same time or use bbm. We have devices running software that is responsive to what we want. Do I play music on my phone? Sure, sometimes. Do I wish it synced with my itunes or had a better interface? Of course. But Android phones are meant to fulfill a plethora of needs and to cater to a variety of users–despite being marketed to and best suited for techies. Your multiple choice questions are all in relation to competitors. Though it would water down your results the only survey that will really answer your questions is one that is fill in the blank. “Your favorite aspect of Android is _________.” “You would like to see ___________ from Android in the future.” That is keeping with the spirit of Android and that will paint the best picture of the Android user experience; it will be all over the map. Cheers.

    @Emily,

1rst this is about the Android platform. stick to that. and outdated is to damn loosley used. smart phones today are good for 4 years. As long as they are supported.

the Original iPhone can run the latest version of the iPhone OS which is 3.1.2 and it runs fine. I’m sure the G1 would run the latest Android OS if it’s makers tweaked it as well. the advantag Apple has is like you said, they make both the OS and the hardware.

Outdated is when a device is no longer supported.

and just about every phone gets update once every year. For example:

    iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS

RIM Storm 1 to Storm 2

    Palm Pre to Pre Plus

using your value system Android devices get outdated every few months.

    Moto Droid to Google Nexus.

I recommend you stay focused on the Android platform. rather than trying to throw stones at others.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

    • Emily

I know the G1 can run 2.1 I said it could. I was replying to the Apple Fanboy that came to try and bash Android OS.

I know “just about every phone gets updated once every year” I was trying to say you can put the new OS onto the old phones, but unlike the iPhone the new OS version on an old phone doesn’t lack features that the new one has just to make the new one better. The OG iPhone and the iPhone 3G can take video, it’s got a camera sensor, just Apple doesn’t want to allow you the ability.

And I don’t know where you got the idea i thought its outdated. I never used that word once in my rely to Appleboy nor do I think I hinted at it. Maybe you should read the post I was replying to, then reread mine. Try from your computer this time, maybe you can read it better.

      • Paul Eccles

but unlike the iPhone the new OS version on an old phone doesn’t lack features that the new one has just to make the new one better.
        huh?
The original iPhone running 3.1.2 is capable of anything that any other iPhone is capable of. Don’t get what you’re saying.

It didn’t have Video or a Compass before, how is a software update gonna give it that?

      • Emily

        It does have the hardware.

There is an accelerometer right? There’s your compass… My Droid has an accelerometer. Did it come with a compass? No. Do I have one? Yes. Does it work? Yes.

It takes pictures right? That means it has a sensor that’s reading the image. All it takes is software to record a video instead of just one frame. It’s not a film camera. Most point and shoot cameras and a lot of cell phones do it. They don’t have a sensor for video and a separate one for images. It’s the same piece of Hardware.

      • MikeD

I too am confused? Software doesn’t add harware on to an older phone.

The Original iPhone only has hardware limitations when compared to the later models. but it still runs the latest OS. Isn’t that the case with Android devices?

I understand that fanboys are irritating. I don’t like them even when they are pro my point. But You are mistaken in you approach. please clarify better.

      • Emily

It’s not adding hardware to the phone. The hardware to do both already exists. Stevie’s just not letting you have access to the software that allows the hardware to do those things.

Now if I said the software added a Flash well than that would be bullshit. The iPhone doesn’t physically have a Flash. But it does physically have a camera sensor and an accelerometer. Both requirements to capture information for video and use an accelerometer based compass. They didn’t just stick a micro video camera and a swiss army compass into the 3GS. It’s using (an updated version) of the same technology sensor as the old phone and probably the exact same accelerometer.

  • nastybynature

Multi-touch. More specifically pinch-zoom would be nice. A few more quality apps directly from Google would be nice too but I suspect this year some time we will see these things on android.

I just hope that the current phones (moto droid) are given all the new software updates so I don’t have to buy a new phone to have new software features as they become available on the newer handsets.

What is with the….its not an iphone, so I luv it! Please,, the whole Android thing is getting funny…Don’t be mad because Apple drops one phone per year, and Android is gonna drop like 20 this year. To me, that’s total F… U to the customer status…it’ll be impossible to stay up to date. Android is just 2 under polished imo right now, and the only thing the developers are looking at is Hurrry up, drop a new version, and while ur at it, drop a new device too. Instead of ok..here’s a new version and completely bug free. Apple trumps…And ohhh boy is there going to be a lot of hate when this new iphone 4th gen gets unleashed…Luv the Hate!

  • branon

Forget multitouch. Its not happening. Clearly. Whatever the patent reasons might be. lets move on. Be happy with widgets which the other phone does not have.

BGR: the survey has a problem. In one of the questions, you mention the media and video player as being a possible thorn on Android’s side. And yet that does not show up in a later question regarding stuff that needs improvement.

  • blah

My one bug-a-boo is the browser. Is it too much to ask for full animated GIF support? Even though it’s fairly compatible with Apple’s browser, it’s odd that they left out that feature (Palm pre leaves it out too)

Gotta love the ability to load apps from anywhere on the web, not just through Market.

  • Im-a-broke-geek

As a newly adopter of the Android OS (HTC HERO) , I am very happy with the device and OS so far. Coming from the Blackberry world I feel Android is years ahead of my BB. The fact that it is based upon an open system and is tightly integrated with Google services is a win for me. I have had an Apple 3G and I have to say that it is one hell of a device as well. To be honest I truly love the Apple phone and think it deserves it’s rightful place in history.

However I am really tired of the flaming wars between the so called apple fan boys, crackberry users, etc… Everyone has a personal preferrence in life and if yours is that of Android… so be it. If yours is that of Apple… so be it.

In the end it’s a device you are most likely going to have attached to you body like a cojoined twin. That is until you are eligible for an upgrade.. then sayonara twin!

For me I tend to gravitate towards new devices, stuff that the vast majority of the unwashed masses do not have yet. When blackberry began giving their phones away the coolness factor went down the crapper. The same will happen when the average Joe user begins using Android devices exclusively. All cool points are then lost!

Personally I like to be somewhere on the edge of what they give us here in the states. Once the majority of folks are using my phone, I know it’s time to move on down the road.

The 1997 Apple slogan used to be “Think Different”.

Tell me how can you “Think Different” if we are all the same?

    • MikeD

Don’t forget to throw in Fandroids in with the fanboy fanatics.

Anyways, so using your logic, if everyone starts using Android that when you get off of Android OS?

If people are buying phones for cool points irrespective of brand, thats just stupid.

  • Lucid REM

there’s a phrase .. good things come to those who wait .. if we exhibit just a little patience we will see some major improvements .. i love the android system .. it is very easy to use .. after i got my G1 my boss got one .. i changed over to myTouch and my mother got one .. then the president of the company got the droid eris .. the one unifying factor is the ease of use .. some features will be added/modified over time .. we just have to wait and see

    • MikeD

Thats true and applies to other smartphone platforms as well.

      Well said.

  • Maulik

    i took it

  • Michael Scott

In an interview with Laptop yesterday Sanjay Jha said “I think you will see us deliver multitouch in the majority of our devices going forward. There’s a complex set of factors, not all of them technical.”
Sounds like multitouch is coming :)

  • Nate

I hate how the mytouch only allows so much space for apps, and I keep maxing out the limit. Not sure if other android phones are like this, but it is a major flaw. Can’t figure out if there’s a solution for this. That is just one of the many things that I DON’T like about my android phone. Can’t wait until I can get out of my contract and get an iPhone.

    very cute pic

  • rae rae

Am I alone here in thinking that the worst part of android is that it’s buggy as hell?

I can’t hardly use the contacts or messaging program without experiencing it selectively determining who it is able to find in my address book.

This is particularly a nuisance with the text-messaging program– it just doesn’t find people sometimes when you type out their name, people that are absolutely in my contacts.

Between that and frequent crashes, odd behaviors, unintended touch events when trying to scroll, no pinch zoom. . . it’s a pain in the ass.

BUT! I still like it better than my iPhone. . . I just wish I had a SideKick with a decent browser, decent apps, and good gmail support. SideKickII was the best UI (hardware) of any phone I’ve used. . .

    Who writes these ‘surveys’?

This 1 ends at a dead-end with no link going anywhere.

My 8 year old writes better web code.

  • NewCUMMER!

I not only agree I’d like to add to this delicious list. So here are mine; Nipples (Cone or “Silver” Dollars), Aeriolia’s, Shaved Kitty, Fur-Burger, a nice tight ass, a gorgoeus back to hang on to while slamming doggy style, and what I refer to as a CLAPnSLAP – that’s the HARDnFAST sound, scent, and Utopia of a good grinding sidway doogy romp.

Perhaps for desert quality pair lactating breasts!!
