Windows Mobile 7 to get first showing in February at Mobile World Congress

CES

Robbie-Bach-2

Robbie Bach, Microsoft’s President of Entertainment & Device Division, dropped an interesting little tidbit of information on an analyst call earlier in the week. Reportedly, Microsoft will be demoing the much hyped Windows 7 Mobile in mid-February at the Mobile World Congress in Spain. Bach went on to to say that Microsoft would be more involved with manufacturers when the times come for WM7 devices to go to market and that Windows Mobile 7 was not just an evolutionary release. We’re looking forward to the demo and hoping Microsoft steps their game to the next level.

Is it just me or does BGR need to hire someone to revise their posts because I don’t think I’ve ever read one with out finding at least one typo.

  • Jarrett

My apolgies in advance to the people attending the conference. Mr. Bach promised you a demonstration of Windows Mobile 7. Let us get this power failure resolved and then once the system crashes we will need time to reboot into the BSOD and then after that we can try the demonstration. So give us about an hour then we will continue.

    Thank, Steve Ballmer

    • Who?

I hear a prediction for WM7 to have Blue Screens of Death. That would be awesome:

      BSOD on the HD2 FTW!

  • Agd

I wonder how wm7 will be like, it is a little late u know.. android and iPhone are far ahead I will compete with web os u guess

    • Schtick Man

Just because it’s late doesn’t mean that they stopped development when it was supposed to come out and have just been sitting on it since then.

    • Soddy

Hmm, that’s funny. The Zune HD was a “little late” and yet it’s been getting great reviews and some sites have even picked it over the iPod touch. Let’s try, ya know, not being a smug asshole and keeping an open mind.

        @ Soddy,

Settle down, no sense in soiling yourself.

        What’s a Zune?

        That was pretty neat, thanks.

      • Paul

I wish I had a buck for every idiot I’ve seen post that.

      • Kyle

too bad nobody actually, ya know, bought the Zune HD. Just because people like it means nothing if they don’t actually buy the product. And, as everybody knows, nobody buys Zunes.

  • Mike

This may be their last kick at the can for this.

If the new Zune is an idea of what they might do, then this could be interesting.

“Syncs with Windows” is a LOT different than “integrates with Windows”. This is their core advantage.

The underlying core of WinMo/WinCE is not bad. However the user interface has always been terrible.

They may trip up on the trying to be 2 things. A consumer and a business product. The “window dressing” is quite different for each.

It’s ok if they do a different UI for business (industrial) and the consumer.

    • Robert

I actually prefer the Titanium interface for 6.5 far more than I do the iPhone/iPod touch interface.

Yes, let’s talk about later comers, such as the PS2 over the Dreamcast, or the Wii killing everyone. And no, I don’t own any PSs or Wii’s… so no fanboy there. Just pointing out that late is not typically a bad thing. Look at Natal… if Natal can pull off what they claim it can, then being the last to implement motion control was a smart move.

And I would never say the iPod is not #1, that would be ludicrous… however, what I will point out is that people I know that used to be all about their iPods are somewhere else now. Me and a few of my friends are Zune users now. Another pair of friends I know ditched their iPods (one who even had the latest iPod touch) for a couple of Archos media players. In no way do I believe the handful of people I know equals a trend, but its still something to think about. People are starting to get educated on gadgets and are realizing there are alternatives now.

The point of that being… I’m an early adopter of Android, G1 and I like the OS. I hate the hardware. But for my needs, I can easily adapt to Apple, MS, or Android. Just because I have a G1 doesn’t mean I have to stick with it for the rest of my life and after all this time with it I’m willing to see what WinMo7 has to offer. After using Android for a year+, WinMo7 isn’t late, its a new alternative.

Now my only concern is it too late to get WinMo7 on the HD2? With the hint of being able to share Xbox Live Arcade games, and if it works effectively, it will sell me on WinMo7.

    • Mike W

I agree on everything you say. In the same gist, I would also have to say that if the HD2 doesn’t have WM7 immediately I wouldn’t be too disappointed, because we know that HTC and Microsoft work very closely together (HTC has several programmers working at both the Google and Microsoft campuses with their development teams). To see what HTC did in such a short time from the HTC Touch to the HTC HD/Max to now with the HD2… all in about 18-24 months… I’m very excited to see what a WM7/HD3 will be like. I remember being shocked when I saw the HTC Max and going “That’s a giant screen, they can’t top that for awhile.” Then with the HD2 I had the same feeling. I can’t wait to be proven wrong again.

Point is… the HD2 will not be the prom queen wearing the Windows Mobile 7. The TP3, HD3, HTC Tablet, or whatever it is they are brainstorming back there is coming… and with the recent track record of both companies it’s hopefully going to be amazing.

        @ Mike w,

Amazing really? HTC makes Hardware and skins. So their product better be “amazing(good)” because that is their business. Microsoft hasn’t done anything right in awhile. I know you are going to say Windows 7. You would be right other than the fact that the operating system took 10 years to finish? 7 is what Vista was suppose to be. Since they couldn’t figure it all out in time Vista is what the world got. Now the abtual GM finally got shipped out late last year. 10 years to develop and release an operating system. Amzing isn’t quite the word I would use for either company.

  • Matt

Great been waiting for a good WinMo phone. Hopefully VZW will get one pretty soon.

    • http://www.applebythehour.com jarrett

It won’t be too soon, I believe Microsoft has stated phones shipping with WM7 won’t appear until atleast the Q4 of this year.
Just because they are showing it doesn’t mean they are selling it.
How many times have we seen a Natal Demo now. Just because you have something to be processed doesn’t mean the cannery will be able to get it on the shelves.

    Can you say: “CTR+ALT+DEL”?
    How about SuperVistaDOSWinMo8WickedAwesomeMilleniumPLUSver10.0.01.8 ?

On my T-Mobile Touch Pro2 I am running WinMo 6.5.1 and the HTC Sense user interface (shell). I am very happy with this setup.

I plan on buying the HTC HD2 and look forward to it having (possibly) WinMo 7.

I have used a G1 with the Hero build and like the Android OS.

Given the choice between the Nexus 1 or the upcoming HD2 that will run WinMo 6.5 (as my TP2 is currently configured) I am going with MS WinMo products.

There’s problems with all mobile operating systems on the market. So for me there’s lots to love about both Android and WinMo. Because of this I refuse to jump on the bandwagon and criticize WinMo simply because that’s the cool and fashionable thing to do.

Lastly, I suspect that WinMo 7 will be as improved and revolutionary as Windows 7 is. (I have Win 7 on a netbook. Having used Win 95, 98, ME, XP and Vista, and even the oldie Windows 3.1 that was simply a shell hiding DOS I feel knowledgeable enough to opine that Windows 7 is fantastic).

If WinMo 7 is as big a change (for the better) as Win 7 is, well… I can hardly wait. WinMo 7 on the HD2, that will be the baddest ass phone around.

  • ItsMichaelNotMike

I enjoy reading everyone’s well-reasoned opinions on topics like this. So much better than people name calling and deriding, with nothing more.

Me? I am hoping that my prediction is correct, that WinMo 7 will debut in April 2010 and that the HD2 in the U. S. debut will have WinMo 7.

And I hope those predicting otherwise are wrong.

I would really like MS to get WinMo 7 on the market. Further delays, beyond spring 2010, I just think that’s the same as MS committing suicide in the mobile market.

I still think WinMo 7 is ready for the market, but MS did not want to debut it now, when the N1 is in the headlines. So better to wait until April-May when the news coverage of the N1 has died down.

And it was a good call not to intro WinMo 7 during the holidays. After all, everyone knew Verizon was spending a whopping $100 million to market the Droid. Why compete with that. Better for MS to sit on the sidelines and wait its turn, IMHO.

I am one of those who grew up on the old comm 64, then moved onto windows. for. while it was a good run, up until win millenium, then it killed me for it. I am now a mac person, mainly because I want things to work without tweaking Reg entries and such and you cannot ask for a better looking ui and such. I did te winmo on many phones, I went through the moto q 10 times because of issues and that killed me. to me winmo will nevere ever be an option, just like Microsoft won’t be, android, apple and others offer way more flexibility and convenience then win, which let’s be honest, Rhys what life is about, you want it to do what you want with ease, that’s why blackberry joins the winmo ranks.

RIP win, but this capt has set sail.

Does anyone like 7, is it better than Vista?

I’m looking forward for something to challenge my BlackBerry.

Robbie Bach is the only senior executive in technology who can make Ballmer look competent by comparison.

  • Maulik

if windows mobile 7 doesnt wrk thn windows mobile will die a peaceful but painful death

  • Kyle

I think WM7 will be a home run if they update the UI throughout the phone, go to a capacitive display, and make Win Live services sync up like Mobile Me at Apple or Gmail on Android.
I actually prefer Windows Live over Google but I like the push e-mail and calendar syncs that is so difficult to get done with WinLive.
