Unknown Motorola device hits FCC, packs T-Mobile 3G

T-Mobile is getting a lot of hardware love these days, between being the only carrier in the U.S. that can leverage the Nexus One’s 3G bands (for now) and the U.S. exclusivity on the HTC HD2, T-Mo is starting out 2010 with a bang. And lets keep the good news coming, shall we? A mysterious Motorola device has been given the green light by the FCC, and it has us wondering what it could possibly be. Sholes tablet anyone? A few things we can tell from the FCC filing: it will contain T-Mobile’s 3G bands (WCDMA 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz), it will also have quad-band GSM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS radios inside. Who’s excited for a iPhone killer DROID killer?

I would like to mention that the last sentence to this post was added in an attempt to get StevenGlansburg’s head to explode upon reading.

The self-taught, self-proclaimed Holy, Hipster Customers that use the iBone killed it. Bottom line I see iphone users I instantly think “prick”.

      • Bugdog

I have nothing at all against the iPhone–would probably get one myself if I was leaving Tmob–but the blogosphere sure does bring one into contact with a lot of pricks, don’t it?

      • http://www.getupbaby.net danup

The question I have to ask myself is whether I’d rather associate with “holy, hipster customers” or people who somehow think it’s clever to use the term “iBone.”

      • Mrwirez

ibone… The anonymity of the inter-webs is a beautiful thing. It’s where middle aged men can still act like teenagers.

        Pull my finger… o.O bwahahahaha

  • Bugdog

Can we Tmob subscribers pretty pretty please get a phone that is: a) not a Behold II type abortion; and b) not a Nexus One type of pricing debacle? Just a good, solid android device, please…

    • umaluver

Unforunately, Sanjay (Moto Mob CEO) was at the press conference with Google, and he was on board with this new channel of selling phones through google.com/phone.

So, I have a feeling that this may be Moto’s first foray into that market.

      • Bugdog

Good point. Dang. I wonder what advantage Tmob sees in doing things this way–are they trying to nudge out all the old grandfathered plans? My wife, predictably, did not react favorably to the idea of switching from our family plan…

      • Who?

The advantage is clear. Regarding plans, of course any carrier wants you to have to buy a more expensive plan. Additionally, By bypassing in-store sales of phones, 1) there’s no need to train sales staff on how to use them, and 2) there will eventually be no reason to have so many stores, so T-Mobile can close stores, cut jobs, and save cash.

Cell phone stores, like record stores and now book stores, will one day be a rarity.

        @WHO

Barnes and Noble and Borders Books are everywhere

You can buy CD’s at Best Buy and Starbucks and it doesn’t seem to be changing

most people aren’t going to spend over $500 on something they haven’t seen or touched. i might have done it in my 20′s, but not now. been burned with crappy stuff too many times that’s been hyped to death.

Palm hyped the Pre and it’s no where as good as the hype

Google is not selling this, they are just a brand name for it and it’s probably shipping direct from HTC. Google isn’t going to get into the warehousing cell phones business. Ask Amazon about their learning curve

      • Bugdog

Sadly, I think you are correct…

      • Mrwirez

Really, all we need is “the data pipe”. I wish Google would just put out all phones across all networks unlocked. If Verizon starts jerking you around, hangup and turn on Sprint or T-mobile. “Buy and Fly”. Screw dealing with the broadband gatekeepers.

OT: I was looking at my bill and wondering why text messaging is not part of my unlimited data plan…SMS uses the least amount of data yet, costs the most… Wtf, we really should be filing a class action suits… =/

      • Bugdog

I hear ya on the SMS thing; where are them dang enterprising class action plaintiff atty’s when you need them?

Trouble with the data/dumb pipe idea is that, for all intents and purposes, you can’t buy a US phone that REALLY works on more than one network. I’d guess that if G could put out such a phone, it would be prohibitively expensive. So it’s basically all a farce, and yes–we consumers get the short end. Dangit.

    • coolguy

umm… the cliq is actually a great phone.

      • Bugdog

I’ll take your word for that–not trying to dog it. It doesn’t appeal to me, though, so what can you do.

  • Mistro

It has the same 3G speeds as the Milestone.

Is it a CLIQ with 3G or a Backflip with a different processor?

    • michael

      The cliq is 3G…. i know i owned one…

      • Laz

Thanks for sharing, I don’t know!

    • -ray

This is the new Hello Kitty Cliq…

      • jaymax

Shhh…you’ll make the Verizon boys jealous. ;-)

  • JFA

i think it is the beautiful sholes tablet. Way to go T-Mobile, i almost forgot about this device being rumored to hit this network.

    now for the X10

  • dhill

Be nice if it was the 4.3″ shadow. Sigh… CES wasn’t good for me. Nothing interesting from HTC, Moto, or for verizon.

I want my next phone to be data only using VOIP (via sipdroid) so I’m having people around me (southern NJ) do tests on TMobile for me now, but I’m still nervous about it. Can’t wait to leave AT&T though, even with an ETF.

    • kane83

I completely agree about CES. I was really hoping for some 4.3″ screen, snapdragon and some other beast-like features to be announced for Verizon. My area doesn’t get good service from any other providers :(

    • archimedes

I’m in southern NJ, Vineland to be exact. Prior to Christmas I was getting totally abysmal edge speeds with T-Mobile that made web surfing and google maps too painfully slow to use. I was planning on cancelling my data service because it just wasn’t worth it. Some time between Christmas & New Years I suddenly started getting 3G signal. I’m now averaging about 2 or 3 bars of 3G signal (as opposed to none only 2 short weeks ago) with speeds between 520 and 760 Kbps according to mobilespeedtest.com. It’s still nowhere near the theoretical 7.2 Mbps that T-Mobile’s network is theoretically capable of, but I am happy to report that for me at least, T-Mobile data service in my part of S. Jersey is now usable.

      • dhill

I live in Mt. Laurel (about 10 minutes from Philly), work in Princeton, and my wife’s family live in Waretown (near Long Beach Island). So I need to have good enough data for VOIP through that whole area.

      • jaymax

TMO just updated their 3G coverage map yesterday…among others areas, it showed a large increase in 3G coverage in Jersey.

  • Courtney

    @ archimedes:

Once the backhaul is put in place, you’ll get your faster speeds.

T-Mo has thousands and thousands of sites to get fiber too but they are working non-stop.

The biggest hurdles are working with the local telco’s who seem to put our additional T-1 and fiber requests on hold for weeks at a time. I think that’s how they compete by hampering their compettion any way they can. They also jack up the prices for us too to make the sting that much moreso.

The Verizon’s and AT&T’s of the world don’t want us to beat them at their own game and will do whatever it takes to slow us down.

    • Schtick Man

Guess you missed that reply button, huh.

  • Danny

Great time to be a TMO USA customer!

This device supports speeds up to 10.2 Mbps which would be in line with the newer HSPA + network scheduled to go live in many parts of the US by later this year.

  • Courtney

    @ Schtick Man;

Actually here at work the reply button is blocked on the computer I use. When I’m at home I can see it fine.

It used to be worse. The BGR site used to be blocked completely until I got my IT dept to reconsider. Some sites like Engadget and Broadband Reports are forbidden for us here. Don’t know why?

    • red014

Maybe because you’re getting so much work done while visiting these sites?

(Don’t hate, obviously I’m doing the same thing…)

  • strangepork

What are the odds that this thing will have a physical keyboard? Three to one? Four to one, these days? All these touch-screen-only handsets are making me feel like a snobby record collector talking about how vinyl just “feels” better…

  • Darwin

    It is the Moto Milestone/Droid…….

FCC ID is IHDP56KC6 for this one vs IHDP56KC5 on the Droid.

    • Galen20K

You’re correct, its T-Mobile’s version of the Droid if we go by that which you are correct. So I also believe its the T-Mobile Droid rumored to have increased RAM and processor speed.

I just hope they improve the keyboard as well….

    • strangepork

Holy moly — isn’t this, like, big news? I mean “Droid to T-Mobile” kinda feels like a headline to me, no?

  • Jay

Holy ****in **** if this is really like a Motorola Droid for T-Mobile. Yes! if so. It’s gonna be my next phone then…I’ve held back from getting a Nexus One because of the lack of a physical keyboard and a Nokia N900 because of my love for Android but the Droid would be awesome because it has good hardware, Android 2.0 and a physical keyboard but it’s on frickin Verizon and their prices and $350 ETF and CDMA. -_- If this is like a Droid and is really going to come to T-Mo then I’m set, that’d be perfect. If it is a Droid for T-Mo I’m gonna buy it ASAP, def gonna get it…gonna be my next phone I hope. A great Android 2.0 phone with great hardware and a physical keyboard.
