Vudu Logo

VUDU has taken a great leap forward, moving from its small lineup of streaming media set-top boxes and its presence on a few home entertainment devices to being the embedded media service of choice for LG, Mitsubishi, Samsung, SANYO, Sharp, Toshiba and VIZIO. The popular streaming movie service will be installed on select models of broadband TVs and Blu-ray players across all partners, an arrangement that may put millions of VUDU-enabled home entertainment devices into living rooms across America. Customers who purchase a VUDU-spiced HDTV or Blu-ray player will be able to access VUDU’s 3,000 strong on-demand HD movie catalog and its exclusive 1080p HDX formatted feature films. VUDU also announced its new VUDU Apps application platform, a cloud-based application service that allows customers to browse photos, stream video, access social network sites and more from the comfort of their favorite chair. They’ve got over 100 applications in the catalog and they will be available on broadband HDTVs from Mitsubishi, SANYO, Sharp and Toshiba and on broadband Blu-ray players from Toshiba. We need this. Now.

I don’t know Mike… Internet TV has been lead by bit players like Roku and Boxee. Technical people have been watching TV online for years. Getting Walmart involved takes it to the mass market and makes it easy for more non-tech folks to add internet TV as part of their entertainment experience. I’ve been on the internet TV bandwagon for a few months now and have been blogging about it at http://www.cheaper-tv.com. Replacing cable TV with internet TV is the near future and Walmart will just accelerate the pace of adoption.

I for one am glad to see streaming video move into more markets. Hopefully the disc and mortar stores will become a thing of the past as soon as everybody has high-speed internet. Any solid dates for release of these devices?

At $4 a rental I can’t see these guys being competitive, especially when you get the same thing from Amazon and pay-per-view. Heck, I pay $1 a day from my local rental shop for new releases.

C’mon Need2ski…you know the benefits – Amazon doesn’t have the Blu-Ray-like quality that Vudu has and it’s certainly not $1 a day. My only gripe with Vudu is their delayed availability time with studios. Granted, it’s the studio’s fault but still….
