BlackBerry Bold coming in non-camera form, possibly only version

Whisper

We’ve heard rumblings about this for a little bit, but a tip we just received gives a little clarity on the situation. Apparently RIM is going to make a non-camera version of the BlackBerry Bold 9000 pretty standard — not earth shattering. But, we’ve heard that RIM and some carriers might actually discontinue the BlackBerry Bold 9000 model with a camera, to get people up and over to a BlackBerry Bold 9700. Not the worst business move we’ve ever heard…

Wow! No camera or browser, good move RIM.

      That’s what she said.

Michael Scott doesn’t know how to use a Blackberry…Dunder Mifflin doesn’t even support them.

Dunder Mifflin-Infinity DID support BlackBerry…There was an episode when Ryan the temp came in and told everyone they were all going to use BlackBerries….

Some places people work are not allowed to have anything with a camera on it, cell phone included. This is smart. Notice why Verizon has 2 of the same phones (even blackberrys) one with a camera and one without.

  • joe

    they never said no browser

    • T

the blackberry browser could be considered “no browser” for how poor it is…

      • Angus

Have you tried Opera’s Mini? Might be a solution for you.

  • T

Sounds like the type of phone the company I work for would buy in the hundreds of thousands… no camera, no browser, just strict usage for business… so email and closed-loop instant messaging. Yeah, that’ll be my next work phone all right…

      you’re dumb :)

  • boydroid

    Blackberry has a browser?

  • Wiseguy

Rogers in Canada has been carry the bold with no camera for a couple months now….it’s for the big companies who need security…but this isn’t new news..

  • rcmadiax

is this really considered news worthy?

  • Michael Scott

I’ve got Dwight researching now…ill get back to you on bb support.

    • Laz

I just saw Dwight put a recording device that looks like a pen at BB support when attempting to sway them away from Staples…

Many government offices as well as hospitals do not allow cameras in phones used by employees. Im sure this will be a welcome move to anyone who gets a company issued phone.

    I like BlackBerry cobbler.

I’m more of a peach cobbler fan. Too bad good peaches are out of season… :(

Decently smart move by RIM! Seriously the only shot they have at stayng in the game is to go after the business market! This year they are going to get killed in the open market! With the release of the Nexus one, the HD2, a new iPhone, and just heap of Android devices, RIM is set to get shelved. They will not be nearly as popular in the open market as they’ve been.

    • ljp

Yeah! The 8 million phones they sold last quarter to the “open market” was just a fluke! People don’t know what they’re buying. Soon the RIM scam will be exposed! The Palm Pre will destroy RIM, oh wait, I meant the Motorola Droid, oh wait, I really meant the Nexus One. That’s the phone that will relegate RIM to obscurity!

      • Arthur

And the iPhone! Remember that time everyone said that the iPhone would eviscerate RIM? And it totally did, right?

  • STFU

All the IT admins are rejoicing over this.

  • J

AT&T has also had the non-camera 9000 for B2B for several months now. Super late on this one BGR.

    • David A

the news was about removing the model with camera from the line-up, not about the release of a non-camera 9000. before you talk crap you might want to read.

  • Obamas Wifes Big Butt

The pink Pixi will continue to feature a camera, right? That’s the corporate device of the future

  • CanisMajor

Discount the standard 9000? Great move! Two days ago my company replaced my blackberry with a 9000. Where is the 9700, I asked? “Well, we only support the 9000 at this stage” lazy ass IT responded. If only RIM had taken this decision a few weeks earlier.

Question on the camera, though. Why do they need a camera-less version? Can’t a BES admin just block use of the camera through a policy update? On my 9000, our BES admin blocks all app downloads and use of WiFi.

Where the hardware exists, some enterprising soul will find a way around the software lock-out. Any kind of software can eventually be cracked, even if it’s difficult or impractical. Your supervisors will feel much more secure knowing that a phone without a lens or image sensor is quite unable to take pictures no matter what you do to it.

Sure is a lotta fail in here….
