LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Three of the world’s leading media, technology and entertainment companies – Discovery Communications, Sony Corporation and IMAX Corporation – today announced a joint venture to be established to develop the first 24/7 dedicated 3D television network in the U.S. The partnership brings together three leaders with an extraordinary collection of award-winning 3D content, technology expertise, television distribution and operational strength to deliver a high-quality three-dimensional viewing experience to home television audiences.

“Today’s announcement is the next step in fulfilling Discovery’s mission of providing groundbreaking content for our affiliate partners and enlightening viewers with the most immersive and realistic viewing experience available anywhere.”

“Discovery’s business strategy has always focused on delivering groundbreaking content through new platforms, including the first suite of digital channels launched in 1996 and the first 24/7 basic cable HD channel in 2002,” said Discovery Founder and Chairman John Hendricks. “Now, as Discovery celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2010 as the world leader in satisfying curiosity and bringing audiences the most realistic viewing experience, we continue to change the face of television with the launch of the first-ever 24/7 dedicated 3D television network.”

“Sony is the only company with expertise in every part of the 3D value chain,” said Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation. “We are delighted to be partnering with Discovery and IMAX, two premier companies also dedicated to leadership in 3D, in this groundbreaking new venture. It is clear to us that consumers will always migrate to a better and richer entertainment experience, and together we are determined to be the leader in providing that around the world.”

“By partnering with Sony and IMAX on 3D, Discovery will lead the way in revolutionizing the next-generation home viewing experience in the U.S. and around the world,” said Discovery Communications President and CEO David Zaslav. “Today’s announcement is the next step in fulfilling Discovery’s mission of providing groundbreaking content for our affiliate partners and enlightening viewers with the most immersive and realistic viewing experience available anywhere.”

“IMAX has been a pioneer and recognized leader in 3D technology for more than twenty-five years, delivering the premium in-theatre experience to audiences around the world. We’re reaching more and more consumers with the recent expansion of the IMAX® theatre network and the growth of 3D movie content,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “This new business venture is the first step in our strategic effort to take 3D into the home and extend the IMAX brand. We’ve already had strong collaborations with Discovery Communications and Sony in the past on IMAX event film titles, and we are thrilled to work with such strong partners to be the first to make in-home 3D a reality.”

Discovery, Sony, through its U.S. affiliate, Sony Corporation of America, and IMAX each will be equal partners in the joint venture. It will be launched in the U.S., with a goal of driving consumer adoption of 3D televisions and giving the network long-term leadership in the 3D home marketplace. In the future, the companies also will explore international distribution opportunities in selected markets.

The new 3D network will feature high-quality premium content from genres that are most appealing in 3D, including natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology, motion pictures and children’s programming from Discovery, Sony Pictures Entertainment, IMAX and other third-party providers.

Discovery will provide network services, including affiliate sales and technical support functions, as well as 3D television rights to Discovery content and cross-promotion across its portfolio of 13 U.S. television networks. Sony will provide advertising/sponsorship sales support, and will seek to license television rights to current and future 3D feature films, music-related 3D content and game-related 3D content, while providing cross-promotion at retail stores. IMAX also will license television rights to future 3D films, promotion through its owned-and-operated movie theaters across the U.S., and a suite of proprietary and patented image enhancement and 3D technologies.

Governance for the joint venture will be handled by a board of directors comprised of members from each of the three companies, with the day-to-day operations run by a separate staff and management team that will report to the board. A search for the venture’s general manager will begin immediately.

The parties have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent. Specific financial terms of the venture were not disclosed. The parties will work towards prompt execution of definitive agreements, subject to any necessary regulatory approvals.

I think 3D TV would be a great novelty and an interesting development.

I’m skeptical that it will become the mainstay of future programming.

  • Dara

Awesome, I hope the PS3 will be updated to drive a 3D display. I’m almost positive that 3D blurays will be supported, but I want 1080p 3D games.

      @Dara,

You being an engineer I would like to ask a favor. We just launched a site (the content probably won’t be of interest to you. Understand the appeal factor, fraction intended for and the fact that whoring for hits is a good idea.:) ) That being said, I need feedback on the site’s look and implementation of my scrolls and what not. It is a work in progress and the content will vary to extremes I am sure. But I need to make sure it has a clean look.

      Thanks in advance

PS, you can email me from the site with any constructive comments.

Your website sucks, you should kill yourself.

      • Dara

Me being an engineer, I’m allergic to websites that take text and turn it into something else. I also/therefore hate Flash.

That site, like almost all flash sites, is too resource intensive for what it is providing. That’s a general complaint that I have with most websites though.

More specifically, the scrolling text effect is cool, but needs a fast forward feature as users will want to read faster. If you could get the scroll wheel active when it’s paused, it would be much more functional.

In terms of design, you need an anchor at the top of the page. Something to draw attention to what the site is. Just adding a line under the title would be a start.

Perhaps not ‘the future’ of entertainment but who cares? 3D TV round the clock, awesome.

    • LMAO@U

Sooooooo… you gonna buy $1,000 set (minimum) and $70 glasses (minimum) and pay extra for this 3D channel to watch about how many hours of 3D tv per day or week?

And for what? A bunch of pretty layers?

I’ll skip the 3D. Wake me up if they ever figure out holographic tech instead… if I’m still alive then.

anynoe know this? i got news that “Verizon says future Google Nexus One will run on its network, but will not be sold by Verizon” what’ the matter?? will it be true?
    http://www.verizon-cellphones.org/google-nexus-one-released-by-verizon-in-spring-2010.html

    • T

Way to selflessly plug your poorly-written blog. All you need to do is go to http://www.google.com/phone and your answer is readily available… or read the news story on the website you just posted a link to your blog on which says it’s coming to Verizon, and where Google says it aims to change the way phones are sold.

      • http://www.soontobemysitesaddress.com/asshole jarrett

        @T,

Okay, I shouldn’t ask, but what do you think about this site?

        http://www.applebythehour.com

I would like some constructive critisism though, I already know the content is per an individual basis. I want to know your response to the look and concept.

      • T

Fair enough – I’ll be constructive on this one, and the previous one. This apple one is painfully slow. Who hosts that? The Quicktime use on the home, not sure that its necessary.

As for the content on both. Spell check it, be super critical of grammar too. You’re presenting news, so you need to put the best face on it. Also, abandon the questions for now. It’s clear you’re getting going now. So take the news story, write your thoughts on it, your take on what it could mean. Once you develop a following, then you can start asking the questions. But the key when you’re starting out is that you need to rely on others for the content of the story, but not for the content of what you’re writing about it.

      • GetDaFucOut

Ah yes, the new face of journalism: Fuck grammar, fuck objectivity, fuck going out and getting the news yourself and fuck any good writing skills… as long as the website is aesthetically pleasing.

Right on, one more blog to add to the millions read by no one out there. Thanks!

      • Ivan the Terrible

You’re right. You shouldn’t ask. So don’t. No one cares.

  • PhoneLover69

Porn in 3D? Yeah! I hope Digital Desire will support this format. Only then I will buy a 60 inch 3D HDTV

  • Juanito

I agree with you phonelover69, porn in 3D is the way to go but wouln’t that make you uncomfortable seeing a the man’s private parts rigth in your face?

  • ~Phel

Kelly, due diligence, I’m guessing the majority of the people that come here fit the male 18-34 demographic. Don’t you think mentioning ESPN will also be doing this is relevant, even if it’s not initially around the clock?

    • Kaz

ESPN’s announcement must have gotten all caught up in the Nexus One hype…

  • Jarrett

As I stated, content isn’t the hard part. The time killer is the build itself. I never realized how shaping things takes.

    Thanks

  • jarrett

what form of suicide should I use? you should at least give me some ideas to make sure I succeed.

After seeing Avatar TWICE (not because I liked it so much, but to make sure there wasn’t something I missed), I’d have to say 3D tech is overrated. Way overrated.

I don’t see the point. It’s not in true three dimensions, its not ‘popping at you’, you can’t truly see around the image and because its a simulated 3D image on a 2D screen, everything just looks layered. It also appears that at a certain point, the distance or horizon drops back into 2D, so there is a virtual wall where the 3D can only ‘extend’ so far.
Its a cool effect, don’t get me wrong, but not ‘drop all kinds of my hard earned-money’ cool.

I think I’d much rather have an LED tv w/ 120hz refresh.

    • http://www.soontobemysitesaddress.com/asshole jarrett

      Agree on the LED.

    • Carl

I agree. It was sort of cool but it wasn’t the “wow” experience that I thought it might be. And it gave me a headache for some reason. It was cool to see everyone in those insane glasses but other that no biggie.

  • ~Phel

Well it is coming and if any one has any capital to invest, I would recommend stylish/comfortable 3-d glasses….people will be buying these and they won’t want the cheap paper ones to go with their expensive new 3-d home systems.

  • Jarrett

    @ Dara

Thank you, that is exactly what I wanted.

This post was 10 Months ago. Fascinating how fast things change -

Microsoft, Sharp, Toshiba etc etc all have Autostereoscopic 3D displays in development, and on the content side, a technology is being tested that creates enhanced depth perception in existing videos. It’s called EDS. (Source: livestation.com/videos)
