AT&T finally jumps on the Android bandwagon

Breaking

att-android

AT&T made it official just now — the wireless carrier will release five new Android handsets in the first half of 2010. Of the five, three will be exclusive to AT&T and include:

  • a Motorola smartphone with MOTOBLUR and a unique form factor, presumably the Motorola Motus/Backflip
  • a Dell smartphone, the Dell Mini 3 that we saw at the FCC late last year and was confirmed by Dell today
  • an HTC smartphone, also an exclusive to AT&T

That leaves two remaining handsets, one of which may be the Nexus One, while the other is open for speculation.

I hope this thing is rugged. With the exception of that iMate phone and some very bulky WinMo devices there are no smartphones on the market that are even remotely close to being rugged enough to use outdoors or that can survive occassional drops that could also be carried in the pocket without a big bulge. So ATT is all balls deep now..

Awesome! Maybe I won’t have a reason to switch! Bring on some 7.2 and a good android phone and I’ll stay.

ATT always has had the newest phones. They are dragging their feet with the android.

I agree about dragging their feet…I bet this means that iPhone will be at other carriers soon.

Correct, it was all about AT&T extending exclusivity. This announcement pretty much answers that question.

I guess the other one will be Sony Xperia X10 it passed FCC for both T-Mobile & ATT 3G networks

Yeah Right the Experia is pure mobile fantasy.

Att is such a joke…lmao!! Their service was so horrible I left for sprint and now I have never had a dropped call!!!! I’m happy I left… :D

  • Head Honcho

Hard to get too excited. The Dell phone looks like crap and so does the Motorola back flip. Everyone else announcing exciting phones and AT&T wants to impress who with this crap?

  • Head Honcho

Who are thy kidding about the fastest 3G. I see hardly any difference in speed between edge and 3G on my Tilt.

  • Seabass

This is a joke they are about a year behind android. I think att got blinded by the Iphone and dropped the ball on this one.

  • pimpin

how bout apple, at&t, and google all had an agreement to not release a google device on at*t till the current iphone agreement ran out…seems to be the most logical explanation for them not jumpin on the android bandwagon…

Who cares about AT&T “exclusivity”? Come on AT&T, you know these “exclusive” deals are your last gasp at remaining relevant in a coming era of wireless telecomm commoditization. You’re trying to “differentiate” but you’re a carrier and can’t innovate to save, well, your own life. You lucked out with the iPhone, but 2010 will be the year of the Android “superphone”. Your free ride on the one-trick iPony is almost over.

    • BDW

Who are you kidding. iPony??? The iPhone may be getting old and outdated but a new one is sure to come. It was also released before all of the Android phones. I don’t even have an iPhone but my friend works for them and he said the next iPhone is going to be loaded with huge improvements and be sold at the same price. That is one phone I am looking into.

  • Droid Lover

you mean the i-joke = Apple’s exclusivity limited ATT from launching the Android and that my friend was a calculated risk and it proving to be a very bad decision.

Sounds awesome, hopefully it’s out when I can upgrade

  • Dan McNificent

Let’s hope they put service over apps with these phones because i would love to use my PHONE as a PHONE & not just an internet tablet LOL

I wish there were an iPhone network bandwagon. I would surely jump on Verizons.
