T-Mobile completes 3G network upgrade to HSPA 7.2 Mbps

General

t-mobile-logoPotentially some good news for those T-Mobile fans out there. T-Mobile has completed a scheduled 3G upgrade to its entire network, an upgrade which boosts HSPA speeds from 3.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps. T-Mobile had initially promised the speed bump by the end of 2009, but hey, better late than never when it comes to bandwidth. T-Mobile is also promising another upgrade is in 2010 to HSPA+ with peak speeds of 21 Mbps; a trial is already underway in Philadelphia. In our own, very rudimentary, tests here in Boston, we aren’t seeing the 7.2 Mbps type speeds we were hoping, 1990 Kbps down and 200 Kbps up, but we’re keeping our hopes up. Any T-Mo users out there that can report faster 3G speeds?

    I recorded 5300in/1100out
    nokia N900 tethered
    speedtest.net on laptop
    Brooklyn, NY

  • Zach

    3662 kbps in Tulsa, OK:)

  • alex

what some of you dont realize is that not all phones can take advantage of higher speeds

  • Brandon

I’d recorded 5.3 mb down in pittsburgh

  • sikkboy

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the Bold 9700 was not capable of speeds above 3.6. Also, aren’t BlackBerry speed tests inherently unreliable due to the BlackBerry servers compressing the data?

    • Dave

You are right, the Bold 9700 can only handle 3.6 unfortunately.

Re your second point: If you run a speed test while tethered, you should only be going through your carrier’s network, so the speed result should be accurate.

      • sikkboy

That’s kinda what I figured, so the only unreliable result would be on the handset itself. Gotcha.

  • Joogle

    AT&T had the fastest “Theoretical” 3G throughput @ 3.6mbps peak (vs. EvDO rev. A @ 3.1 burst).

What good is a 3.6mbps burst throughput if it is only available in limited markets? Speed without coverage is worthless. AIW?

  • Nico

I really get a kick out of people claiming to get speeds higher than 3.6Mbps on phones that are only cabable of 3.6! Talk about looking stupid. That’s like this person claiming to hit 10Mbps on Rogers HSPA network (21Mbps) on a iPhone 3GS that is only capable of 7.2Mbps. Dummy!

    • iPhone

Check it again, it’s 5MB max on the 3GS.

Earlier today I was getting 1900 down on my 3gs. Now I’m getting 3000 down. Now Nashville just needs a little more backhaul to go with that 7.2 software upgrade At$t completed today.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

I’m getting anywhere from 2.5Mb/s to 3.0 in northern Delaware — using a Nokia N900. It was around 1.0 a few weeks ago.

I’ll be in center city Philadelphia tonight — can’t wait to try it there!

  • blakedunc235

I got 6573 kps down with only two bars of 3G at West Point, NY on a G1.

  • http://bgr Weasel

3G speeds on my G1 in Los Angeles went from approximately 800kb down/300 kb up, to 450 down and 180 up, beginning Jan 5. Any idea what’s going on?

    • Daniel K

same here in fresno, ca.its slower then before the upgrade

  • Steve

T-Mobile G1 in Manchester, NH (3G) Today I am seeing 418kbps(down) and 258kbps(up) but sometimes it hits over 500kps(down) and 350kbps(up)..Seems like it went down a little after the new year, not sure why??

Because I am bored, I did a few tests this morning to check and see what mine was.
I am located in Nashville and ran these on a BlackBerry 9700.

First test I ran on the TMobile WAP browser. Interestingly enough, the only option that I had (using mobilespeedtest.com) was the 100kb test.

    Test 1: 125kbs
    Test 2: 87.816kbs
    Test 3: 158.416kbs
    Test 4: 103.493kbs

    BlackBerry Internet Browser
    500kb Test
    Test 1: 1843.318kbs
    Test 2: 2469.136kbs
    Test 3: 2877.698kbs
    Test 4: 2325.581kbs

    2MB Test
    Test 1: 2985.075kbs
    Test 2: 1604.814kbs
    Test 3: 5925.926kbs
    Test 4: 871.935kbs

    3MB Test
    Test 1: 890.538kbs
    Test 2: 6015.038kbs
    Test 3: 8135.593kbs
    Test 4: 8391.608kbs

    5MB Test
    Test 1: 2484.472kbs
    Test 2: 6944.444kbs
    Test 3: 8016.032kbs
    Test 4: 8492.569kbs

If I try and click on the 7MB test, it says entity too large. =-)

  • Jay

Shouldnt those of us with bb 9700′s see an increase of some speeds being now more people are able to hit over 3.5…… at least over 1mb we should now be able to get no?

  • elijahblake

so Tmobile upgraded their 10 cities with 3g? wow, now how about spreading some 3g around and actually doing some good!!!

    • jaymax

      TMO’s 3G network covers 200 million people…quite a bit more than “10 cities”. :-)

  • Carl

elijahblake is just another ignorant idiot. Hopefully, I hope you have Verizon at least if your talking, cause HSPA 21+ will be coming very soon :)

  • colnago

No change from 930Kb/340Kb on n900, in between DC/Baltimore…even after T-Mobile OTA WAP settings update on Sunday.

  • Darren

Just tested in Ft Lauderdale and got 6838kbs down…
Running TP2 with a XDA custom ROM

  • Viet Tran

I just ran a test while tethering on my laptop with my Motorola CLIQ in Santa Ana CA.

I got 1.11 Mbps download and 0.04 Mbps upload with a ping of 99ms. If 7.2 HSPA live, it doesn’t look like they’ve flipped the switch in my area yet.

  • Andrew

First of you are all idiots!! RIM has a download cap on ALL of their 3G Blackberry devices. Download speeds are capped at 800k on the down and I am not sure about the up. This is verified and you can ask RIM.

    • Pony

I have never heard this anywhere, but it would explain why I have never seen speeds faster than that on my 3G. BG can you verify this? Pretty misleading by TMO and RIM if true…

  • newspeak

i feel cheated here in tampa …i am getting like 930 down and 300 up…its a boost but the rest of the country and even orlando seems to be getting faster results…i hope the fact that it has increased some doesn’t mean that there isn’t anymore backhaul upgrades coming

  • David

I used speedtest.net and recorded 951kbps max download and 463kbps max upload as of 01/29/2010

  • Jeff

I used SPEEDTEST.net app on Nexus here in long beach,ca and i’m only getting 1.04/mbps down and 1.17/mbps up

  • DavidClevOhio

I downloaded speedtest.net on my G1 from the Android market and the fastest 3G speed I could record was 926kbps download and 600kbps upload and this is after running test after test after test. Most of the time it was lower and the “average” download speed would be about 600-650kbps as of Feb. 27, 2010. I have never been able to get over 1mbps on 3G in Cleveland Ohio since the “upgrade”. This is very disappointing because I was looking for at least 2-3mbps download speeds. I know that just because they say 7.2mbps that you will get nowhere near that, even in the middle of the night with minimal network traffic, however I at least expected to break 1mbps. Maybe when I upgrade to a new device this may change. I am looking at the Google Nexus one or the Motorola Cliq XT but not sure yet. Anyway, that is my comment.

  • Who?

Ad? I had an AT&T Tilt for 2 years. In December I got a Sprint Touch Pro2.

  • Pony

Okay… but my 9700 “bursts” over 800 kbps.. even for a second… Never seen anywhere near 3.6 Mbps or even 1-2 Mbps…

    Anyone else???

  • AndGuz

Me too. Wash DC, T-Mo 9700, I’m pulling down 0.22Mbps/0.34Mbps (yes, up better than down).
    Sucks

  • Pony

Is there anyone with a BB 9700 getting speeds faster than 1Mbps??

  • Pony

    Tethering….

  • Pony

No, its not a joke. I, and many others use their BB 9700 3G to tether to their laptops while traveling…

And we’re capped at 80-100 KBytes/second it seems… Well below the speed capable of TMO’s 3G network.

  • Stanly hutchison

your post makes no sense. fail.

  • Joogle

I guess that explains a lot about the Canadian education system.
