Google Nexus One hands on

GoogleNexusOne-1

Alright boys and girls, we’ve just got our hands on a Google Nexus One of our own and here are some first impressions as well as photos… As light as the phone is, it’s not flimsy, and seems to be incredibly well manufactured. This is HTC we’re talking about, after all. The screen is beautiful — gorgeous really — and is very responsive. It’s also very fast with that 1GHz CPU powering the phone, and we’ve been zipping through apps and screens without a single hiccup. Check out some hands on photos in the gallery, and look for our upcoming review!

So since Google sells the device directly, who provides warranty support for the phone? Who provides general support?

I have a Droid, guess what happens when you need support? Verizon says “You can try Google’s support site for that, we don’t handle those issues”

For those of you who don’t know, the Google support experience is basically an echo of yourself from other unhappy users who can’t solve problems and not one Google rep EVER answers support questions.

The Nexus One sounds awesome, but I would NEVER recommend a client, or non-technical person to buy one because support is non-existent.

Support from carriers is almost useless on smartphones. I am a tech-savvy user with a BlackBerry 9000 on AT&T. I don’t call for simple issues.

I have never had a satisfying device OS support experience when calling AT&T, despite hours on the phone with varying levels of escalation hand-offs. I have had some success when they bring in someone from RIM, but that was on my previous BlackBerry a long time ago. I don’t know if they even do that any longer.

In almost all cases, I resolved my issues with information from BlackBerry-focused blogs and on-line user communities. It’s the way of the world now. N1 is part of that ecosystem. Your experience with VZW and Droid confirms it there, as well.

i’ve had blackberries w/ AT&T and a 4 month stretch/horror show with an iPhone 3GS before landing on my current berry9700. When you have an OS issue, obviously the customer service person who picks up the phone knows nothing. quickly tell them the problem and you’ve been through this before and you need to speak not to tech support (one level above the person who answered your CS call) but the level above that. it’s called like data network support or something.

those guys CAN fix almost any problem and they recognize immediately if they can’t. and put you on hold while they connect you to RIMM themselves. free of charge. My personal best is 5 1/2 minutes from dialing in to AT&T, to getting hooked up with a rep from RIMM.

You have to be a little obnoxious but face it, you should be, AT&T has no idea what they’re talking about.

This comment is fascinating. It shows why Android will get some traction, but not the mainstream adoption that’s occurring for iPhones and Blackberries. You need to support these high end devices – things happen to them. Without that piece, Android is doomed to become what Linux is in desktops – lots of hyping techies who swear by it, but not adopted by soccer moms and grandmas or the non-techie layperson.

Really want this phone. Too bad there’s no sign of it coming to Rogers.
For me $530 is just too much to spend.

Also FYI, support is through the Google and HTC.

  • http://youknowit spongebob

Support is mostly through the manufacturer not the service provider. as long as the phoen connects to the network the service provider did its job.

      • Joey S

Last I checked there are about 702 other hard working people on the petition that have jobs and have things like homes, cars, children, etc. that they would rather spend $500 on. Don’t worry you’ll understand when you move out of your moms basement. Get a life.

look what the iPhones done — its finally gone and made someone out create what Cupertino did. [What] might that be you ask? Simple… they created a BENCHMARK by which all handsets are judged.. and finally, it appears a contender in an apples-to-apples arena has finally submitted the juggernaut beast. Yes, iPhone stammered with implementing cut/copy/paste.. it single tasks – weak reception.. but there’s no arguing that its the yard stick. This victory however, is all conditioned upon the music store google is working on bringing to the US, and that the virtual keyboard is up to task.. Personally, having owned the iPhone 3GS and gotten rid of it within 5 days — and having stood in line to get the first G1, Im eager to see something with a 1ghz clock rating, the google logo and a full qwerty keyboard. But.. the proof of concept is complete. Android/Google is a monster competitor.. and we have apple to thank.

Wait, I thought Engadget sold their soul to Apple? It’s Sprint/Palm now?

There’s always an excuse when a review doesn’t go your way.
