Google Nexus One to rock out on AT&T?

Whisper

This isn’t completely confirmed, but we’ve heard from a source that there will be an AT&T 3G-compatible version of the Google Nexus One. Our connect described it as being a “second” unlocked model, with the T-Mobile-subsidized unit being locked to T-Mobile. Our tipster was so impressed by a Nexus One in person, they said they would 100% give up their T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700 for one when it’s available. We’ll see what happens on the 5th…

If Google offers an unlocked phone that will work on AT&T’s 3G network, that’s hardly the same as “partnering’ with AT&T. In fact, it’s the opposite. AT&T is happy to sell people a subsidized phone because they can lock them into a contract. A person who buys an unlocked phone doesn’t need a contract, so they can jump ship whenever they want. Google is offering unlocked phones specifically to break down the lock that wireless companies currently have on their customers.

At&T has a better coverage than T-mobile in both voice and 3G. T-mobile has a good Edge, but it is not enough nowadays. G1 was a way to attract ATT customers to T-mobile, or to prevent T-mobile customers from switching to ATT. If Nexus One will be freely available on ATT subsidized, it will be no good for T-Mobile.

Pllllleeaaassseee! ATT Sucks – we all know that – fan boys or not – admit it, ATT SUCKS! I had the iPhone for over 2 years – of course the phone is GREAT – but ATT is still trying to figure out how to make voice calls work – much less trying to get data to cooperate! Their network and people are sub-standard, for all their high prices and fancy commercials – they can’t deliver what is quite honestly “simple” 21st century technology (i.e a reliable voice and data network) – oh and when it doesn’t work Darth Vader blames the CUSTOMERS – Right so all you poor schleps with ATT its YOUR FAULT that you pay for service and expect to be able to use it!

I’ve left ATT and now happily have a HTC Hero on Sprint! Battery life is a little crappy – but my 3G and voice coverage is solid and the price is about $20 less than the equiv. ATT plan.

Actually ATT voice works kickass on the simple Nokia 6085 I’ve been using.

James, Sprint sucks. Obviously you live in a city and don’t travel beyond the metro area. I have had Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T and thus far the best service from any of them has been AT&T. Obviously a biased review from you.

i am by no means an AT&T fan boy, i’m actually not a fan of any carrier. AT&T just happens to be what I’ve had for the last 4 years and I have never had any problem with my service during those 4 years, with only 1 exception. Last new years eve when every idiot in the world is sending out their lame generic “happy new year!” text messages my phone would not work for like half an hour. Other than that my phone has always worked when I wanted it to and i have NEVER had a dropped call. AT&T may not be awesome, but neither is t-mobile, sprint, or verizon. They all suck. AT&T just happens to be the lesser of the evils.

Why should Google care? They should just want to sell as many phone as possible, regardless of carriers.

The fact is there is no one carrier that is superior to all other carriers in any given area. In other words, sometimes Verizon has a five bar signal and AT&T will have zero signal in one location, and vice versa in another location.

If every carrier had the same phones, we would get a very good idea of who, on average, really is the best network. The only thing separating carriers from each other is the technology and the radio bands they use, not the actual devices themselves.

AT&T operators and service reps are the worst!

If you feel the same way drop in on the AT&T fanboy forum and let them know how you feel:

You’ll be glad you did, I was. :p

Sprint reps are actually much worse.

This (if true) is also a big win for Australia because our largest 3G network the one that covers about 30% of the place works on the 850 band as well.

Ok, people let’s get a clue!!! Everyone complains about ATT network but for dropped calls and so forth. Have you taken into consideration that amount of users ATT has to account for compared to Sprint and T-Mobile. I mean really ATT has about the same amount of users as Sprint and T-Mobile combined. And for Verizon there service has not been the same every since their acquisition of Alltel. They have dropped alot more calls than before just the same as Cingular Wireless did when being combined with ATT. It happens when you bring more user on board and try to get your networks to sustain the usage. Also, ATT has more smartphone users which takes a toll on the network. Just wait until Verizon gets the Iphone people will realize that ATT wasn’t as bad as they thought because Iphone users use alot more data than any other smartphone user. The only reason why Verizon may not experience as much of bad quality with the network is because 1. They will be able to take page from ATT and prepare better for the users and 2. They will not gain as many customers and in such a small period of time like ATT did because Verizon will not be the only career in the US with the Iphone.

I don’t know why everyone says AT&T calls drop all the time. I’ve had AT&T for 4 years and the only time a call drops is when I’m talking to my friend who is on Verizon. His calls get dropped all the time. Mine never do.

  • Larry

Ive never had a problem with AT&T. I hope they get the nexus one. The incredible looks cheap.

The T-Mobile version won’t be 3G capable on AT&T’s network.

    T-Mobile doesn’t have 3G service where I live, AT&T does.

Thus, I care who it goes to.
