Motorola sets up special event for CES, rumored to launch two new devices

Rumor

After a recent major come-back, Motorola is rumored to be planning something major for CES next week. Analysts are predicting that on January 6, Motorola will be announcing an Android device for AT&T, and the only guess that leaves us with right now is the Motorola Motus. A second device is slated for Verizon Wireless, according to rumors, and if we had to bet, you’ll see the Motorola Calgary. These are just rumors for now, but we’ll see soon enough.

Is it me or does that not look like a true hardware keyboard? if im not mistaken it is said to have a unique design function.

  • Zach

@Brandon it flips from the back of the phone, so when the keyboard isn’t open, it is the back of the phone.

Any smartphone not free on contract is doomed to abysmal sales performance on the iphone carrier. There’s virtually no reason for motorola to release an android device on AT&T from a business perspective. (Sure there are a handful of users who want one) The general clueless public either has or wants an iphone and if they are going to put up with ATT’s crappy network they may as well get the iphone, especially if it’s the same or cheaper than an ATT android phone.

Yea ask Rim how the BB sales are going with AT&T, please get a clue before you post.

Believe it or not, not every person buying a smartphone on AT&T is a teenager. Some people actually need a smartphone for work. Some people actually need a functional OS and not some toy. Hell, some people may even be so individual, they may want to do crazy things like change their homescreen. Not everybody is a one-dimensional tool whose only purpose for buying a smartphone is to say, “Hey everyone, look at me and my new smartphone!” Some of us don’t have mommy and daddy issues :P

I disagree! I think an android device on the AT&T network will sell well. AT&T will be the only carrier that offer all the major mobile operating systems.

    • betchplz

      They don’t have webOS.

I hate the way they want this to operate, flipping the keyboard out from the back? Really? Ugh.. Motorola is just being different for the sake of it.

      • MachineDog

I rather like the idea of this being the first cellphone to sell on a major carrier in the US with the ability to have a front facing camera, as far as I’m aware.

and it has the same blank friggen key as the droid

    • Nick

err, what i thought was a smudge actually looks like a down arrow

so it’s at least designed better than the droid

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

no one told you? if everyone with a droid pushes that button simultaneously the world will end. so it DOES do something.

  • SUGAR GROVE

I glad there’s alternate os’s for cellphone competition.
However the Android platform is puzzling..
If you have the same phone with AT&T or Verizon or Tmobile etc they each provide updates to the platform at different times so you could be at v 1.2 with Tmobile or v1.6 with Verizon.
Someone should create a market place for developers to create and sell applications across all carriers that use the common platform, or does it exist yet?

it’s called the Android Marketplace and run by Google

  • JFA

Hopefully moto DOES announce the calgary, its rumored to run android 2.1 with motoblur, that way my CLIQ can get a much needed OS upgrade from 1.5

Motorola wouldn’t leave us CLIQ users behind….would they?

  • SUGAR GROVE

    FYI
Dan Hesse will be doing some additional ads from the former Eastern Germany in Black and White.
Sure to cheer us all up to have the warm fuzzys for Sprint

See my post in the nexus one bulletin for my nostradamus like prediction of att getting an android device in 1Q 2010…lol

“And the only guess that leaves us with right now is the Motorola Motus”

If that’s the case, Moto-Motus has quad-band GSM connectivity and – weird enough – it looks like it also supports the 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz WCDMA bands, which means that both AT&T and T-Mobile could launch it. Wow a frequency for all?

TO ALL MOTOROLA INTERNAL SPYS READING THIS. YOUR PRODUCTS ARE CRAP. THE DROID WASN’T ENOUGH. THE COMPANY IS SPLITTING. ITS ALREADY WRITTEN IN STONE.

  • StevenGlansburg

It’s cool Motorola is trying, but their designs for everything Android so far have sucked IMO. They are rigid looking and feel cheap.

    • Meko

hey, the DROID doesn’t feel cheap at all. Any BB Curve and Tour feel like utter cheapies next to the DROID. Have you help one freely in your hand? Seriously, the thing has some solid build quality to it.

    ah yes… the GoofyPhone… can’t wait

  • bobdogg

This device looks like a piece. It will fail miserably like all other Moto products outside of the RAZR and DROID. Someone needs to tell MOTO that 2 successful devices a century will not cut it. ALL manufacturers(outside of APPLE) producing phones for AT&T are suffering because of the iPhone. It will only get worse if Apple doesn’t mess up the 4th gen iPhone. I was very suprised to hear an AT&T Rep saying they will be carrying the X10. The Blackberry Bold 9700 is the best blackberry and best non touch phone available and I can almost assure everyone its selling better on T-Mobile. This Android stuff is starting to get old already. Google should have picked one manufacturer like HTC to make there phones and made only flagship phones like Apple did. I mean Apple is number 2 in smartphone marketshare in the US and they only release 1 phone a year. Thats remarkable. BTW I am no Apple fanboy. I have a Samsung Eternity and my lady has a 9700. I am waiting for some snapdragon love.

  • MrSholes

I’ve seen rumors that the second phone that Motorola is supposed to reveal at CES for Verizon Wireless is the Motorola Sholes Tablet. This seems more plausible to me than the Motorola Calgary, since both phones are said to have OLED displays and the Calgary is supposed to have a TFT-LCD display. It would also make sense for the Sholes Tablet to be the second phone, since it is basically a keyboardless version of the Droid with some nice hardware improvements/additions. This would continue the Droid hysteria well into the new year.

    • Droid101

It’s called the HTC Passion/Dragon/Bravo! Comming soon to Verizon!!!

  • dirtboy

I am waiting for a Flagship Andriod Device to hit ATT. I am tired of my BB 9000.

Their network is far superior to Verizon here n South Florida!

I have been with BS/Cingular/ATT for 20 yrs!! Very happy with my se4rvice, signal and speed.

Andriod or 4th gen iPhone for me in 2010!

  • Jeff

I roo think an android device or two on AT would make good business sense.
