HTC to debut a new touchscreen tablet at CES 2010?

Forget the iSlate, an unconfirmed rumor suggests that HTC may have multiple models of a new touchscreen tablet, a device that the Taiwanese handset manufacturer has been secretly working on for the last 18 months, ready for debut. One model of the rumored tablet will feature a Qualcomm processor (Snapdragon?), a touchscreen display (multi-touch?), new software from Adobe (Flash?) and will run Android. The tablet will reportedly be shown to a select group of HTC customers at a private showing next week during CES. HTC has been working closely with Google in the development of the tablet and is expected to roll out a second model of the touchscreen tablet with Google’s Chrome OS. Slap some wireless 3G connectivity onto these slates and HTC may win the prize as the manufacturer with the hottest portfolio in 2010.

    If all these tablet rumors pan out, we may see the return of the “European leather carry-all” or man-purse, a la Seinfeld. Nah, attache’ cases will have a big spike in sales.

    This is good news HTC is making awesome devices and Android gets better and better.

    So if Apple is going to have a competitor on the tablet market (when theirs finally one) this is a good one.

    This will keep Apple and Google innovating giving us good products and maybe keeping prices in check.

    Well I hope it runs better than HTC’s phones… their interface are stunning to look at but are functionally a train reck. They are slow, sluggish, and are not very cohesive with the operating systems they run on. As it stands now, consumers have to wait for 3rd party developers to release ROM’s that fix performance issues in HTC devices… and only the most dedicated consumer hacks/flashes their phone with dev ROM’s. It should not be this way and is unacceptable IMHO.

    If this thing comes out around the same time as the Apple tablet, I will be VERY interested to see which one overtakes the over in sales.

    @Michael Perry – the biggest problem with HTC phones is not the software, but rather the outdated hardware. They keep using a now-ancient processor architecture, which is simply no longer adequate for modern mobile operating systems and applications. The Nexus One is a big step for HTC, and will hopefully mark the end of the 528MHz processor. For something that’s as big of a deal as a tablet device, I doubt they’ll use that old CPU, as that would most certainly render it obsolete before it ever gets to market.

    I thought Al Gore invented all things internet? Wonder how much radiation one will get from that, oh ya, you don’t put a tablet to your ear. Really want to know about new HTC cellphones. I want 4.3 or larger and the Snapdragon for Sprints “now network” and WE want it NOW!

    Welp! I doubt the ‘islate’ will be limited to just one network so they better have the cajones to figure out what kind of hardware is going into the ‘islate’ and try their damnedest to rival it or trump it.

    the term islate is really getting on my nerves btw.

    Htc tablet running on android with a snapdragon processor. Sounds good to me, but I’m patiently waitin for that little rumor called HTC ESPRESSO!!! Am I the only person excited about a new htc phone with a physical keyboard??

    @-phel, I call it a murse too. Hate being single when I go out and have trinkets with me and no where to put them. That’s when the ladies purse comes in to play. Driving a Jeep CJ7 with a softtop doesn’t help either, cuz I can’t leave anything in it without being stolen. So a murse or backpack is always on me. Lame.

    Tablets will be pretty cool. I agree that the more companies that jump in board, the better for consumers. I am an Apple fanboy for the most part, but think they have gotten lazy with innovation in some respects, since they are ahead in certain fields. I can however appreciate thier philosophy of not throwing everything out at once. From a business perspective it makes perfect sense and they are afterall running a “business”.

    Either way, win-win for everyone with competition. Keep it coming I say.
