Google Nexus One docs get leaked: $530 unsubsidized, $180 with plan

Further details about the Nexus One have emerged since we reported about its exclusivity with Google this morning. It will be apparently be sold by Google for $530 unsubsidized, and $180 with a T-Mobile plan. If you do sign up for a plan and cancel within 120 days of purchase, you’ll have to cough up the remainder of the total cost of the phone — $350, or return the phone to Google. The leaked docs also offer the following tidbits:

• Yeah, it’s $530 unsubsidized. Google’s not going to be selling the phone at cost, like so many people considered. They’re not going to save us from the “making money off of hardware” culture we’ve got right now, so this is basically just another Android handset, albeit a really good one
• If you want it subsidized, you’ll have to sign up for a 2 year mandatory contract
• There’s only one rate plan: $39.99 Even More + Text + Web for $79.99 total
• Existing customers cannot keep their plan if they want a subsidized phone; they have to change to the one plan, and this only applies to accounts with one single line
• If that doesn’t fly with you, you have to buy the $530 unlocked version—this actually might save you money over two years if you already have a cheap plan
• Family plans, Flexpay, SmartAccess and KidConnect subscribers must buy the phone unlocked and unsubsidized for $530
• You can only buy five Nexus One phones per Google account
• There is language in the agreement of shipping outside the US
• Google will sell it at google.com/phone, which explains what they were doing with that page a few weeks ago
• Google will still call it the Nexus One apparently, and not the Google Phone

Anyone getting excited yet for what Giz has essentially pegged as a DROID killer? Stay tuned next week for more details from Google’s official announcement at its Mountain View campus… We’ll be there live-blogging the event.

    To All my Android friends,
Please send an email to Android-Jan2010@google.com and express your anger towards the price of Nexus One!

Let this phone be $199 UNLOCKED to get everyone’s attention.

This email is from the invite to the press. So with a collective voice of the fans, they just might change their minds.

I think it’s being overlooked that, in the section offering the phone for subsidized purchase, it also says “Existing users may qualify for upgrade pricing.” I’m guessing, of course, but this suggests to me that the plan offered is a minimum to qualify for the subsidy, while existing Tmo users who qualify will be able to get whatever they set as an upgrade price–maybe more than $180, but not the full unlocked price. It seems consistent with Tmo’s typical handling of the upgrade issue, and if I had to guess, buyers choosing the subsidized option will be routed to Tmo for contracting purposes–new customers could get the 500 min plan (or greater), and existing customers can re-sign for an additional 2 years. I realize this contradicts what Gizmodo’s tipster told them, but if there were only the two options that we have been assuming, there would be no reason the actual leaked documents refer to “upgrade pricing.” My two cents–this is much ado about nothing.

There are a lot of disappointed people over @ nexusoneforum.net with regards to the pricing. It sounds to me like Google lost alot of good will with such a high unsubsidized price.

  • Mikee

A Droid killer, even though it’s on a smaller carrier, with a smaller 3G footprint? Riiiiight. Gizmodo is full of fucking idiots.

  • Cee

I can’t stand some of these responses about getting this phone for next to nothing. Ain’t nothin free in this world. It costs money to make these phones. i would like to have a phone of this caliber for under 150 bucks but that ain’t goin to happen. I would like to buy a Nissan GT-R($75K) for $25k or get affordable healthcare but that ain’t goin to happen. If you want a Nexus One on the cheap I suggest to those people to buy all the parts and assemble them yourself.

The idea of google subsidizing a phone with advertising is interesting, but is quite a few years off from being financially realistic.

Right now, smartphone use is driven by the technologically aware. Simply put, you’ve been around the internet for a few laps if you’re using your phone to surf.

Unfortunately, as many websites who get picked up on Digg or Reddit know, these internet savvy technological leaders DON’T CLICK ON ADS. In fact, many of them use plugins to avoid seeing them at all.

Ad blocking for mobile browsers is going to happen soon. Given the limited processing power, screen space, and bandwidth, it’s even more needed than on PC and, like I said before, the people with smartphones are the ones most likely to make it happen.

If a smartphone is set up to limit ad blockers, it will lose popularity once they are available for other platforms. Firefox for mobile is starting to peek out of its burrow, this will also drive the top end of consumers towards the platforms where it is available.

So long story short, the people Google is courting in the initial rollout of Android are not likely to click ads, are likely to want to block ads, and will not generate much advertising revenue for google.

Later on, when average netizens start taking up Android, it’s possible that such a scheme might work, but for now, the numbers aren’t there.

I find the google ads really non-obtrusive. Sure, I don’t click the ads that often but we kinda got used to seeing google ads on the websites and google site and ignore it. I presonally rely on web search results than the ads. With 1GHz processing power, massive internal storage etc the smartphones that are now equipped with, a few lines of text wouldn’t worry me while browsing. Even the android’s notification system is non-obtrusive which is what I like on a phone rather than having Windows style alert windows popup. I am all for this phone when it comes out

  • Mike

I wasn’t gonna comment but eh what the hell…1st why are adults (i’m assuming) arguing over 3g coverage on a network they don’t own or profit off of (unless your phone is used for business) is beyond me…as far as the price…it’s a no go for me…I can’t see paying $500+ for a phone (ANY phone)…I know that’s the going rate for smartphones but it’s only that way because the public will pay that…stop buying these and prices come down…personally TMO works great in my area (Dallas-Fort Worth), but that being the case I see no need to bash the other networks and their subscribers. Got Damn people it’s just cell phones! Peace

    • Noo Rulez

Why is everyone complaining about the price of unsubsidized phone? Sure, when phones come out, they are expensive. The price drops down in 1 or 2 months unless you are like iSheep who would queue outside ATT to get one. The subsidized price seems reasonable to me given the advanced electronics and software this phone carries which is way better than 3GS in most aspects. Moreover, we, who are not from US, are pretty excited about buying this phone as it is a norm for us to buy the phone in full price and choose a prepaid or postpaid carrier. Freedom of choice that I value. Atleast google is bold enough to offer both subsidized and unsubsidized phones simultaneously so that people have a choice and also agrees to ship internationally. I hope google breaks the networks’ control over the subscribers and the phone manufacturers.

  • Roger

So since the phone is to be offered through t-mobile would t-mobile have it in stores so consumers can try it before they buy it? even though its technically still a google phone?

  • Yaron

Google can and will sell it at cost, and this is why:

    1. they can – unlimited money

    2. local/mobile search will be getting getting more hits then web search.(more ads revenue for Google.

    3. Google bought not long ago the UHF bandwidth of the old tv channels which will be used to transmit internet in the coming years. hence no more greedy cellular companies. internet will be “free” all calls will be VOIP.

    4. crash apple and its control freak iPhone ( just for spite and for not approving the google voice app

    5. open source – no need to explain this one.

6.GPS navigation – goodbye Garmin and its friends.(i’d start to sell stocks right now)

personally i will never buy a phone more the $200 as much as i want to put my hands on this Nexus One.
it’s absurd to spend this kind of money on a phone, regardless what it can do.

I bet Google could hand it for free if they really wanted. the amount of money they’re going to make by spreading their OS, and maps, ads over the mobile network will suppress the 500 within 1 year, per user.

    • ~phel

Do you really think their shareholders would approve of them giving away a product just because they can? please.

  • Al rextus

Ever call someone who has a ‘smartphone’? Usually goes unanswered as the thing is charging again!

    LMFAO

    • Usman

Hahaha… especially if you have a G1 or iPhone, lol…

  • omar

big mistake on the unsub pricing not competitive enough to fight the iphone ……google you had you chance and now your failing

  • Noo Rulez

Okay guys, stop worrying about price for now. See more shots and video of nexus one in action. Once word “SEXY”

  • ebatr8

LOL at all the complainers who thought this phone would be cheap unlocked you guys are the real fails!! this seems like a bargain for a phone with 1ghz processor the iphone still cost more and is slower and cant truly multitask but anyways im sure that this plan requirement if its even real wont stick no way will t-mobile lose there customer service stance just because google says so and if it does stay it will be google charging people out this isnt the first time you see this though there plenty online vendors such as wirefly and amazon that say u cant change your plan but tmobile does it for you anyways i work for t-mobile and have seen those terms and conditions they are never enforced this seems like a good phone but i think ill wait n see if the HD2 arrives while WinMo is not as pretty as everybody else its certain functional

  • BlkBear

I have a feeling that in Jan and the months to come, that the Android OS and Android phones, will be coming out in enough numbers to all the carriers that it won’t really matter what the N1 costs or how/where it’s sold.

Personally I don’t care which phone is a “Killer” or which is the “Killie” (not a word, but you get the gists). People want variety and that’s what Android, Winmo, and all the rest of the phone makers are trying to deliver.

  • http://www.murdochfamilylawyersbrisbane.com.au gonds

oh,my, luck me, I didn’t sign for any of those plans

  • Fromer Microsoft Girl

wow, it appears we may have other carrier getting on board and it will have Android 2.1 OS

The introduction of Google Nexus One is a vast departure from the previous business model. Aside from Nokia, who prides itself on selling only unlocked cell phones, rarely have any carriers attempted to offer an unlocked mobile device to the masses.

I know what they are doing, I am just saying that is a legitimate reason to be upset (See Apple). Not the $530 unsubsidized price.

  • Johnny Awkward

What am I doing at 70mph that requires 3G? Downloading streetmaps for navigating by.

    Dumbass.

  • Matt

“tmobiles 3g covers where ‘most’ people live and work”

Are you frickin kidding me? When was the last time you looked at their 3g map?

Its so small I have to zoom into each section just to see the color of the very small area that does have 3g.

I guess by most you mean the people who live in major cities because the reality is ‘most’ people CAN’T get tmobile 3g.

  • queensnewbie

??? Seeing that you confront anyone that doesn’t think like you on here leaves you with no dignity already. You lose.

  • Bugdog

What is with you people that feel the need to constantly confront people commenting on blogs to try to make them feel small? Whatever it is you’re compensating for, get over it–it’s childish and transparent. If you don’t have anything to add, just STFU.

  • queensnewbie

Ok, I am going to use your logic to point out how ridiculous this is NOT to complain. Imagine, if you will (if you can), I am a current DirecTV customer currently with a premium package and the NFL (in connection with DirecTV) is offering a new Sunday Ticket package. But, in order to order the NFL package, you must downgrade your DirecTV service to only local channels plus basic cable. So as a customer I now have to pick what is more important, the NFL package or premium channels, unless I want to open a new DirecTV account just for this package. Does that make sense?

  • queensnewbie

    ^^
    sorry, that was to Miguel

  • Matt

So when you can’t make your point or someone doesn’t agree you personally insult them? How mature..

Anyway the map you link is still the same map with not much 3g coverage to be called ‘most’ people can get tmobile 3g.

  • Matt

miguel I really love how you keep putting words in my mouth and making assumption for me.

I’m not anti tmobile I simply stated that their 3g coverage is small(compared to at&t/verizon) and is mostly in big cities.

Thank you for the 20 year old map as a reference. Going by that map I live in the 100-399 which is far from ” Montana where the men are men and the sheep are scared” and theres still no tmobile 3g.

  • darkprince

It seems you scored poorly in the reading comprehension portion of the SAT, Mr. Alvarez. I simply stated I would love to see the agreement, never that I had the right to see it or any other “privileged agreements.”

What I do find interesting is your choice of words. Such wonderful righteous indignation…Either you work for Apple or you are one of the legions whose souls belong to Cupertino. Your vehement defense of “proprietary information” (corp-speak for none of your damn business) only confirms my premise.

Categorize my theory as “rhetorical idiocy.” It is most certainly rhetorical, as I stated before I unveiled it. However, I must reserve the “idiocy” for you, my friend. Allowing a corporation to own you in such a heinous fashion, regardless if they pay you or not, is just pathetic. I hope, for your sake, that a labotomy of some sort exists for your affliction.

Now please go learn how to fucking read.

  • darkprince

With this reply, I wash my hands of you. I’m not certain what your motivation is for using other posters as your emotional tampons; frankly, I don’t care. Do what you got to do to make yourself feel better. I’ll be the first to admit I can be more than just a little snarky. But you- you’re just hateful and petty. Years of loneliness will do that to you, I suppose. At least you have your successful businesses, no?

I wish you a Happy New Year. May it be a healthy one. Prince out.
