iPhone available from Vodafone UK on January 14th

iphone-3gs

Already available from O2, Orange and even Tesco Mobile, the UK’s third largest carrier, Vodafone, finally announced this morning that it will begin selling the ubiquitous Apple smartphone on January 14th. Vodafone subs will be able to snag either the iPhone 3G or the iPhone 3GS for free on all tariffs over £35 and £45 respectively. Both of these prices assume a 24-month contract, but an extra £5 will shave off 6 months. Anyone interested in tethering should pencil an extra £5 into their monthly budget as that’s what Vodafone says will buy you the right to 500MB of data for tethering. One must pay to play, we suppose.

Isn’t Vodafone, Verizon’s European cousin? Maybe the iPhone to VZW more and more a possibility?

  • nutzaboutpoker86

When are more carriers in the US getting the iphone. I don’t want to have to switch to ATT to get it….

  • modelportfolio2003

This is old news. We knew the phone was coming to Vodafone early in 2010—just the exact date missing. So yawn.

More interesting is if Vodafone will pick up Nexus One with Android, a more advance phone than iPhone IMO.

    • jarrett

Don’t worry, Apple will adjust that idea soon enough. They reinvented the entire phone industry, just to have everyone (Google included). They touch an industry and the industry transforms. You can’t argue that. The difference between Apple and any other company.

  • wisenickvzw

how you can you say that nexus one is more advanced? just because it has a faster processor? have you done a side by side test between the new iphone and nexus one? cuz if so please post pics. i’m excited about nexus one and i’ll probably get it the day it comes out but i’ll also get an iphone.

Wow !!! Free iPhone 3gs $700 value. No doubt Brits get way better promos n discounts than Americans on iPhone. Nothing that can be done. I gotta say my first iPhone edge was worth every penny at $600.

  • Prophet

Verizon will never have iPhone due to they on archaic CDMA technology. Not to mention ads that bash iPhone. Verizon CEO rejected Steve jobs n iPhone in 2006. AT&T came along n revolutionized the cellular world. Just the facts. Truth hurts.

  • Unsung Hero

So it begins! Vodafone gets the iPhone ! Next it’s cuzin to the West Verizon! 2010 year of the iPhone Nano World Phone Dominates! Q3 2010 right in time for next Christmas ! ETF from AT&T!

  • Unknown

If you convert the monthly price plan cost to us dollarS you would have to get the phone for free because the monthly cost of a plan is insanely high.

  • modelportfolio2003

    @wisenickvzw

Faster processor, open source, tighter roadmap and integration between Android and Chrome, more manufacturers to introduce—viz, ACER recently indicated it would use Android for smartphones and Chrome for netbooks, and more. Android OS a real threat to iPhone.

I now wish the iphone would go to verizon so that everyone would just STFU about it. Apple is still going to limit access to its full potential no matter what so its not like verizon is going to do anything game changing with it but perhaps put a cap on its data usage.

However now that I have had my blackberry revelation I’m not sure I could go back. Phones as they are today are meant communicate and honestly the iphone, no matter which network its doesn’t hold a candle to a modern blackberry (ie Bold 2 or tour). I do miss the best browser ever on a phone but if I’m really going to surf the web extensively I’m going to sit down at a computer.

    • Sonya

Let me get this straight, you bashed blackberrys continuously and now you have one? I find that ironic. On a side note I want the iPhone to go to all carriers so people can have what they want. Then if its on all carriers and it still drops calls we will know who the real culprit is. When did you decide the iPhone wasn’t for you anymore?

  • Droid Lover

Prophet Said: “Verizon will never have an iPhone” – Fact: You’re a false prophet. Fact: VZW told the truth about AT&T 3G service and did NOT bash the iPhone. Fact: You can’t spell. Fact: VZW’s parent company is getting the Apple device—Hmm… I’m no prophet but I don’t need to be to understand the equation here.

  • jimbob

Nicely said @ Stevenglansburg first smart thing I heard from u nicely said

  • Derek

    Well said @ Droid Lover!!!!!!!!!

  • Hmm…

@Droid Lover – so Verizon wasn’t bashing Apple with its “Droid Does” commercials?? Also, Vodafone UK has GSM technology, not CDMA, so its not like they just have to change the screen to read “Verizon” instead of “Vodafone” to start selling iPhones in the US.

  • Droid Lover

So I can’t sell my strengths without it appearing to bash an inferior product? Show me any company that doesn’t promote the strenghts of their product and customer benefit?

    • Hmm…

@Droid Lover – that was a direct attack on iPhone with its “i Don’t” campaign. If they arent directly attacking iPhone, then why the little i? Why not say “I am a badass?” Apple didnt bash anyone when they released the iPhone (and every other manufacturer doesn’t do that either).

Since you still may not get it, here is an example for you:

Attack ad – Verizon’s “Map” ads against AT&T

non-attack that highlights a company’s strength – Verizon touting themselves as “America’s Most Reliable Network” for years an becoming the largest carrier in the country.

Does that clear things up for you?

  • James

Vodafone is one of Verizon’s parent companies. It owns 40% of Verizon, while Verizon communications owns 60% of Verizon wireless. And I doubt that this will allow Verizon Wireless to get the iPhone sooner than originally thought, seeing as Verizon is still CDMA and Vodafone is GSM. Sad to say, but its the truth.

  • Fattychance

    Insanely high? $56/mo?

    I think not.

  • Prophet

Apple doesn’t need to go out n make a special archaic CDMA technology based iPhone .thats mainr eason vzw will never have it in USA. They had a chance in dec of 2006. But they rejected jobs n the iPhone. So now u pay for for your mistakes n bad decisions verizon CEOs.
Continue to be number 1 in dumbphones. Continue to be number 2 in smartphones in America behind AT&T.

    • Mrwirez

Verizon has 89 million potential customers. Apple wouldn’t want any of them?? Apple beat up AT&T all they could, now they are moving to other markets.. The Apple fans are a finicky bunch. They will be mad because the iPhone won’t be exclusively on the network they bash?? wtf?

      • MapThis

Why would Apple change make major changes to their phone for just 89 million people (of which how many can they really expect to get – a third? half?)when they are currently making a model that requires minor changes for BILLIONS of potential customers all over the world?

    Sick statistic
AT&T USA has more currently activated smartphones than any other single country wireless provider.more than any country in Europe Africa Australia south America n north America. Sick or what. Now what does that say about the AT&T network.

    • Sonya

This is true. But 80% are iPhones. Other than that their smartphone line up I’d say is the worse out of the 4 companies. They have no Android which is really “in” right now.

  • Billy Boy Genius

    Is this video for real?

    Mac Tablet?

    • billy g

      That is so f’ing gay.

  • iphony igor

The iPhone is so two thousand and late (sorry, I am behind the times). I’m getting a Google Nexus One in Feb. R those snaggle toothed limeys gonna be able to do that?

  • idavid

Vodafone not only has the strongest data network, but has much of corporate Britain wrapped up. So this deal should help legitimize the iPhone as an Enterprise device.

  • Chancellor

Mmmm blackberries, I want mine back so bad…
Also iPhone on verizon would pretty much put AT&T on the tmobile level….minus the cheap rates and customer care.

  • TimW

I’m in west wales where voda’s signal is downright shite. The sales monkeys show you four bars in the shop but nowt at home.
Always rated voda as iffy at best
I’ll stick with my O2 payandgo 3Gs thanx. £440 up front, O2 unlimited tariff, £15 topup with free calls and txts (O2 to O2) for that month. All Good ;-)
