HTC Espresso Sense UI uncovered in ROM dump?

Rumor

When it rains, it pours for HTC. The leak of its portfolio shows a huge number of handset offerings in 2010, the Sprint Hero will be receiving the Android 2.1 update, the HD2 looks to be headed for T-Mobile and apparently their Sense UI is getting a nice update. The latter seems to have been outed via a ROM dump running on a Hero. It’s rumored that this version of Sense will be available on a HTC device codenamed Espresso — a handset that didn’t appear on HTC’s 1H 2010 list. It’s possible that this refreshes Sense UI will apply to all future HTC Android handsets. More screenshots after the jump!

oh god. i truly hope that’s not real. that would be a huge step backward for Sense. reminds me of the ugly ass Ubuntu UI.

Yeh, not liking the glassy look at all. I love the lockscreen

  • aooga

    ugly tiles

I kinda like it but it somewhat reminds me too much of the iPhone interface with the box like, app launchers. Well, this is apparently leaked so things can definitely change before its released, or not released at all.

I like it. Yes it reminds me of iPhone but it’s also very clean looking, something I can’t say about current devices. Mismatched icons always bugged me. We’ll see what the oficial version will look like.

    • George

      ???

It’s using the exact same icons as the current sense UI. How are the icons less mismatched?

T-mobile is getting some really nice handsets, hd2, n900, bold 9700 etc. They really offer some great stuff and where they have 3g its solid. I wish other companies verizon and att would get these super nice handsets

  • Jarred

Hmmmmm, iPhone clone much? Is that a springboard type bottom dock? Symetrical icons contributing to a uniform look to the UI? No, the iPhone isn’t STILL changeing the face of mobile phones….

  • Zaggs

This looks like the Sense UI from Winmo phones, ugly.

  • Dennis R.

Am I the only one that notices that it looks like a skin of GDE? I posted the same thing on Engadget…

    • Evan Jacobs

You’re absolutely right, it even has the same layout as a GDE launcher.

I hear htc n automatically think Hyundai or Kia

I hear apple n think lambo BMW Ferrari. Am I alone here?

    • ChocoTaco

      Yes.

    • Nathan Trimboli

bmw are no where near in the same league as lamborghini and ferrari. poor comparison.

    • jarrett

Poor comparison on cars. If you would have said…. BMW, Mercedes, Cadilac….. or Lambo, Ferrari, Porsche…. You can’t mix the classes.
That said, you would be correct.

    • ChocoTaco

If you mean incredibly expensive, breaks down all the time, is incredibly overpriced, has form way over function ($500,000 Ferrari’s can be outpaced and outmaneuvered by ZO6′s and ZR1′s for pennies on the dollar by comparison) and is basically unmodifiable and uncustomizeable, then yes, Apple is actually a very good comparison to a Lambo or a Ferrari. You don’t get what you pay for – or even 25% of what you pay for – in either instance. Only a very special breed of rich nut huggers buy them, and they only get it to say “I own a _________ .”

  • gquaglia

Looks great, but i’ll never see it on ATT. The only Android phone we are getting is that low end turd by Motorola. The one that doesn’t even have gmail on it.

    • ChocoTaco

You’re not going to see an Android phone without Gmail. The very basis of Android is built around Gmail. Don’t expect AT&T to get an Android phone until they lose iPhone exclusivity. They have sold out to the half-eaten, rotten apple.

  • Sgt. Cell

Like others have said, too much like the Iphone, I like the way it looks now.

    • jarrett

Like everyone else they believe they have to look like the iphone to be successful. They still don’t understand that if they would just create the next platform that would be all they need. Unfortunately there is only one company of earth that constantly changes the way things are……. Apple, not microsoft, not Google, just Apple.

  • mi_canuck

    surprise surprise, it’s looking more

  • mi_canuck

and more like the iPhone UI :)

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • Sonya

Boxed in icons? Um thats not attractive looking. Don’t do it HTC! That’s why the iPhone interface is boring to me. Page after page after page of box icons.

    • jarrett

Yeah, they shoudl use circles or triangle, that would make the whole experience so unique.

      • Evan Jacobs

Or it could have the same effect as pages of boxes…

  • Ethan

I like the lock screen..thats about it so far!

  • http://dearfloyd.wordpress.com/ DearFloyd

Man, I use underlays like that on my BB themes and no one ever complained. Maybe I should ditch that…

  • Ray

Yeah it looks like a BB theme to me, kind of weird ha

  • http://webstarts.com create website

I like this new look although it seems to resemble the iphone a bit.

  • John

Holy cow – cant these companies come up with anything unique? Let’s see….touch based capacitive screen, square icons situated in a 4 by 4 arrangement, all battery and signal indicators across the top of the screen…….couldn’t be more obvious they are copying the iphone – heck any closer and they may as well change the name. Very creative. I suppose they bristle at the obvious comparison the iphone seeing as they have so cleverly made their phone so unique.

If people really like this type of devise so much – GO BUY AN IPHONE.

Well, I guess Apple should take this as a big wakeup call – people love your phone but they are fed up with you telling them what they can or can’t do with it – and I agree. Personally I’m waiting for the HD2, that’s when I will remove Apple’s shackles too.

  • David

I like it and I don’t. The lock screen looks great and the over all look isn’t bad. Remove the bubble crap from the icons, keep the design of the bottom menu but move the buttons around to be the same as it is now( it would royally piss me off to go for the phone button and keep hitting the all applications button) and you would have a really nice UI.

  • ilikeshade

Please no boring icons. I’m not 5.
Ok…does anyone recall the Neonode N1 announced back in 2002? I’ll summarize. Entirely touch screen phone that did every lifestyle function like music, email, web browser, of course phone, camera , and more. Interface was all ICONS for finger friendly use. Sound familiar? I’m just saying. IPhone does what it does great in a nice pretty package but please don’t act like its the first of its kind on every front.
That said. I’ll take my widgets over icons any day. Please dont iPhone-ify the interface. Too simple. Minimalism is for quitters :-)

Once a ROM leaks out, the floodgates are opened. Welcome to the wonderful world of HTC bootloaders, my friends. Espresso details: http://bit.ly/htc-espresso-details
