ST-Ericsson and Ericsson successfully demonstrate LTE to HSPA handoff

Stockholm, Sweden is the place to be for cutting edge LTE technology. An active LTE network has been deployed and is being extensively used for testing — one of the first successful trials demonstrated the interoperability of LTE and HSPA networks. In the trial, a multi-mode LTE/HSPA device powered by ST-Ericsson’s commercially available M710 platform was used to launch an LTE mobile broadband data call. The call was then successfully transferred from the LTE network to an HSPA network. Sounds like small beans but seamless switching between LTE and HSPA is critical for the smooth transition from our current network technology to LTE, and with this first successful hand-off, we are one small step closer to commercially available LTE.

So a network that is upgrading their HSPA systems (like T-Mobile) can seamlessly upgrade it to LTE down the line?

  • yandar

I think its more along the lines of the call hand over between hsdpa and edge.

Wonder how verizon is gonna do it? Their suppose to be getting ready to deploy lte next year, but probably gonna be for wireless cards only..?

  • Lucifer

This isn’t for the handoffs between hspda and edge, it’s for hspa and lte. And verizon plans on using dual mode chips that will allow them to use lte for data and CDMA for voice, at least until lte coverage is sufficient. Att’s plan is similar.

    I want LTE.

No worries bill. I have wimax TOO.

how is the wimax bill do you like it?

    @ jon
    Lol!

^_^ Lets just hope we get some good phones out, and I just might switch to Telia. Hell, if they manage to deliver proper service (high, constant speed, low latencies, etc.) and a decent price, I’d be willing to change my home internet connection.

    • fara

Just checked the prices, and they’re way too expensive to replace my already expensive connection. I just hope they don’t cap it, like they do other mobile internet.

If anyone wants to know, the price for LTE here is 599 SEK per month, which us 84 USD/57 euros. in comparison, i pay 429 SEK for 50/10 Mbits cable internet, and if you can get fibre, it’s somewhere around 300 SEK for 100/100 and 250 SEK for 100/10.

Im happy Ericsson is focusing more on their network abilities. They should seriously drop Sony in the handset department

    • info

ST-Ericsson, Ericsson, and Sony Ericsson are 3 different companies. It can be confusing, but they are.

ST-Ericsson actually reports earnings under STMicroelectronics.

Ericsson is actually Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson.

      Sony Ericsson reports earnings independently.

So your suggestion in regards to Sony is irrelevant in this thread. Ericsson is very much focused on their network abilities, they don’t make handsets. They just own 50% of a company that does.

Nice birds nest on the tower.

notice no breaking news on LTE to CDMA handoffs. ATT will have a much stronger LTE network.
