WIND Mobile in Canada given a green light?

wind-logoWe’ve just started to hear reports that WIND Mobile, Canada’s Robin Hood, has been allowed to start operating “without delay.” This is a huge win for the Globalive team as you’ll remember Canada’s CRTC committee put the brakes on their act a little while back. We’ll be updating this as we get more information. Now, who’s excited for some damn good competition in Canada’s wireless industry?

    You’re an idiot and obviosly misguided. All countries employ those types of practices. Foreign ownership of a Telco in Canada could pose all sorts of risks not to mention potential security risks.

        I was merely pointing out that many countries have foreign ownership restrictions in place. Look no further than the aviation industry. I don’t like the CRTC with it’s current set of outdated Rules and Regs anymore than the next guy but they do serve a purpose. Obviously there was a lot of political pressure to make this happen and considering the dollars spent I can see why.

        Why am I bending over? You think we are getting screwed in Canada or something? Give me some examples.

        Everybody bitches but I haven’t seen anyone actually put anything out there that shows a comparison.

      I’m sure both Verizon Wireless (partially owned by foreign operator Vodafone) and T-Mobile USA (wholly owned subsidiary of DT) are causing all kinds of problems in the US.

      Probably sneaking in terrorists and spies.

        Yet, Vodaphone only owns 45% of Verizon Wireless. The U.S. has similar restrictions on foreign entities owning a majority stake in certain industries.

Also to let you know that more than 60% Canadians are not happy with current 3 big players who just wanna make money(extreme greedy) and reap them off big time.

      Discrimination or whatever you want to call it is practiced by all countries – it’s not balony. FYI Canada isn’t exactly lagging when it comes to technology and if you think WIND is going to bring technological innovation then you are wrong.

      60% of Canadians are unhappy, what a surprise. Who is ever happy with their service provider? Funny that you say that the big three just wanna make money, are you suggesting that WIND mobile is here on a good samaritan mission?

      Just to play the devils advocate give me a few examples of this extreme greed. Name 5 things that the big three charge you for that are such a big rip-off.

        1) 3 year contracts
        2) $0.35 long distance in canada (US visitors on their own sim roam cheaper than that!)
        3) $40 for a sim card (in some countries they charge only $5 or less)
        4) Billing by the minutes (biggest ripoff of them all, you don’t talk but still pay)
        5) Paying for incoming text messages (even developing countries do not charge for this!)

        bonus:

        6) $7 for f*cking call display (which is free to begin with)
        7) $0.05/kb pay per use data (in the US, it’s $0.01/kb)

        extra bonus:

        8) SAF – had there not been an uproar about this BS fee these guys would still be charging it today. If you don’t think this is a rip off then I’m wasting my time.

        We are in Canada so I am sure if you haven’t ever noticed before that pretty much everything is slightly more expensive here. Economies of scale that kind of thing. Not really fair to compare to US they have 10 times our population.

        2) Any one should be able to get fair pricing across the board – you do not have to be able to be a good negotiator to get good pricing. Hence, they rape you if you don’t speak up and that’s why Canadians are paying for it.

        3) The sim cards of NOT free. I repeat, they are not free. If you activate a phone, the sim will come with it. But if you need to buy just a sim, it is not free. Never has!

        4) Rogers, Bell, Telus.

        5) For people that don’t text message they obviously don’t need texting plans but they are being charged for something they don’t use – incoming messages!

        6) No. $7 is for call display only. You obviously have no idea of the fees so why bother replying to my posts.

        It’s more than clear this person either has a corporate plan (so he doesn’t care) or he has a retentions plan (hence he’s a whining bitch), that I got by reading the answers, I mean not knowing that u pay for CID or Txt?, even worst when he reply about the txt “Get a message plan.” -are fkn serious?, if the person doesn’t txt why bother, why do u have to worry on receiving an occasional txt?

        Even more pathetic is the final part, so because we live in Canada we have to let anyone do whatever they please?, no wonder u must likely have the 1-800 for the whambulance at hand, why do I need to worry all the time about where to complain?, why isn’t life easier and just be fair to ppl and I am not saying that Wind is going to be fair 100% be at least is not looking anything like fkn Rogers that doesn’t know where to include the next possible extra charge, probably the next will be “BRSF, Battery Recharge Statutory Fee” or the “PCUF, Per Character Use Fee”.

I have also had to replace Sim cards and no I didn’t have to pay. Maybe I am not retarded like you two and actually take the initiative to look into what I am paying for and then actually doing something about it if I dont like what I see.

        I am looking at my bill right now and I don’t pay for call display. I dont pay for incoming txt’s. Sounds like you are on a pay as you go plan. You should know that those are the worst plans going.

        And yeah HO hate to break it to you but living in Canada does change the way things are priced. You cannot compare our population size to that of the US.

        WIND will be exactly the same as the Rogers,Telus and Bell mark my words. You think they are going to get phones and sell them for 50 less than their competition? Yeah right. You are dreaming in technicolour.

        They have such a huge hill to climb it’s not even funny. You need the customers to sustain your business – if all your customers are getting massively subsidized services (at a loss) they will fail. They can’t afford to do that. The more providers there are only makes it more difficult to maintain a decent service level.

        …wow…trolls do exist….It’s obvious the “dimwit” is another, take that Communicator pack or Txt messaging pack and then ur set for extra fees, it’s normal for ppl to not see those when they are incapable of logical thought hence they have no clue what they pay for, while in other countries (3rd world call them) the service not only covers the CID but also gives them unlimited incoming calls, then ur silly plan is just a rip off, let me put it this way so u can understand, ur plan compared to mine is rip off (I have UNLIMITED airtime and per second billing) wonder what ur “amazing” plan has, see u really need to go back and use google for the proper things rather than looking for whats the best outfit for tonight’s party…

        What’s more expensive, building a tower in the flat Canadian land or in the middle of mountain in the Andes or some jungle in Asia, not counting that u believe every one will go buying sets from the company, let me teach you a new word for ur lexicon, “Unlocked” then add “cell phone”, now search it on Google.

        They’re not going to give you unlimited Canadian long distance if you complain to them, no. Americans never have to change their cellphone number because they are actually allowed to use their phone in their nationwide coverage without having to pay extra. I just find that really stupid, having nationwide coverage, and you have to pay extra to use it. Kinda like the system access fee.

        OD, I seriously can’t understand where you’re coming from. Have you looked at Roger’s website lately for their plans? For 50 bucks a month you can get
        1) 200 (100 + 100) anytime minutes
        2) unlimited from 9 (love how they still call that the “evening”)
        3) a whopping 500 MB of data
        4) an added feature like double your minutes etc., and
        5) call waiting, group calling, call forwarding

        That’s it! Want Canadian LD? For $5 extra you can get 25 whole minutes of LD. Want voicemail, caller ID, and texting? That’s another $20 per month. Want to double your data to a ginormous 1GB? It’s another $5. Plus the system access fee and taxes.

        For the same price with T-Mobile you can get unlimited international roaming, unlimited minutes anytime, unlimited in the US long distance, unlimited text, unlimited data (web and email). So, I don’t know, does the idea of economies of scale account for that disparity? I’m not sure… regardless, you said above that no-one can show you the difference between Canada’s services and those in another country … just look above.

        So what point you are trying to make? We have established that you have unlimited airtime and an unlocked phone – good for you. We have also established that you are apparently an expert on the cost of tower construction though-out the different geographic regions of the world. And we have established that you are well versed in plans from 3rd world countries. Where apparently cell phones are all the rage, second only to staying alive for another day.

        So again what is your point? People want to know or as you would say ppl wnt 2 knw.

    c’mon guys. i pay rogers 80 a month for voice and data package. that its redicoulous when you compare it to prices in lots of other countries.

    point is these guys are making way to much money, they can charge half that and still bring in a nice profit.

    You must be one of the Managers for Rogers or one of the Telcos. Its sad that you are not used to getting quality service at a good price. The truth is there is no purpose for SAF, charging for incoming calls is peculiar to Canada and so is incoming texts unless you are on a text plan. Same for Caller ID. All other so called 3rd world countries still have it better than Canada. You can call me numb nuts, both of us are idiots but I am sure a better idiot than you are. Thats the difference in it for me

    Donald I am an idiot there is no question. I don’t even know what I am fighting about anymore. I don’t work for Rogers and I don’t love them either. However, these types of charges are are not limited to the wireless industry. Have you ever looked at at Bell landline bill. How about touch tone for 2.50 a month. They all do it and yes it’s sad but that is where the CRTC and government need to step in. We as Candian are a pretty passive bunch.

You guys go and do your little internet google search and say “oh damn they got good prices for plans” in such and such country in europe or asia. News flash Canada is not as big a market as Europe, Asia, US. Vodafone can sell you a phone for $20 with $25 dollars of talk time on it cause they can afford to because their # of suscribers makes canadian companies look like peanuts. Bigger market = cheaper plans. Hard to understand? No

        Are you aware, that canadian cell phone companies Bell, Rogers, Telus makes most revenue per subscriber on the world and Canada ranks last in cellphone penetration among developed countries ?
        And don’t tell me please, that all land is covered with signal. We have covered just cities and highway. And big3 got towers beside highway from gowerment (all of us) for free. So try harder next time please.

        First of all you proved my point, you said they make most revenue per suscriber, thats cause they charge alot more cause they have alot less suscribers. That does NOT mean they make more money overall. SECONDLY so only cities and highways are covered? That’s why there are people out in the middle of nowhere LITERALLY, I’m talking about 40-50 mins from a city or highway and others who have cottages beside lakes etc who get cell phone signal? Yea your a smart one there buddy I believe that is the single stupidest thing I have ever heard from anyone speaking about cell phone companies. Go learn your stuff before you say anything.

      More competition=less expensive plans. You’ll see.
      BTW “cheaper plans” is not properly said and I had my first cell phone 13 years ago, so I can answer any of your questions, if you have any.

    WIND can afford cheaper plans because not only does it come from Europe which is bigger market but they also are also backed financially by Egyptian money which means they have the financial backup to be able to offer the cheaper plans which then brings into play what you said, the big 3 will obviously lower theirs because they will have to, whether they have the financial ability or not which has yet to be seen. Also there is nothing wrong with “cheaper plans” unless you want to go as far as to call them cell phone rate plans. There is however something wrong with “gowerment” and “running business”. Lastly, just because you’ve been a consumer for 13 years makes you an expert? That’s comparable to me saying I’ve had television service for 18 years so I’m a television service expert. I know people who have been selling cell phones for longer than that so that doesn’t impress me at all.

      No, but I went through exactly same process in Europe 13 years ago.
      We had just one provider for NMT network, 6 times smaller market than Canada and cell phone was roughly 5000Cad and big like your laptop. You here me right. 5000Cad. Then government got second and third GSM company and everything has change since. There is penetration more then 100%, that’s mean some people has 2 cell phones or one cell phone and USB GSM stick with sim card to get data on laptop. So I am just saying,
      that competition is good for all customers and Canada,
      because we are very behind in communication technology,which is basically in my opinion most important for any business.
      You will see how everything will change in 1 year from now and You will be laughing, how could you write me any of your comments. I just know, because I was going through this process already.

    If you want to see what WIND will do for Canada, go and take a look at what Hutchison Whampoa did for Britain by launching the Three network. Rates that were worse than the US suddenly became the cheapest mobile rates in the world, and I don’t see Vodafone, O2 or Orange going out of business.
