AT&T promises improved performance for SF and NYC

General

We’ve all heard the jokes about AT&T’s sub-par performance and how iPhone users are clogging up its network. Dropped calls, missed texts and delayed voicemails have become so common that AT&T even released an iPhone app that allows you to report network issues. The areas that seem to be affected most are densely populated cities — namely San Francisco and New York (in Los Angeles, AT&T service seems to be fine in our experience; it’s heavily populated but not too dense). And guess where the most vocal AT&T users are coming from?

AT&T’s very own Ralph de la Vega says that Manhattan and San Francisco’s Financial District “are performing at levels below our standards.” In our own experiences, it seems much worse than that, but we’re happy to finally hear it being acknowledged and addressed. He also says that these issues are going to get fixed. “In both of those markets, I am very confident that you’re going to see significant progress.” Thanks for finally coming out and openly saying it, AT&T, instead of hiding behind figures like “our network covers 97% of the population.” We’re looking forward to the improvements.Read

It is infuriating that sometimes although my phone shows 4 bars, when i make a call i get a call failed.

It has gotten so bad, that i am afraid to use my phone for long calls like if i have to call my ban or something like that since the phone tends to just my calls for no reason. Ive never had this issue with tmobile or ATT back in the past (before 3g). I really hope verizon gets the iphone. I personally love my iphone. I have been buying cellsphones for along time. Nokias, Sonyericsson (where awesome in the early 200′s), but now the iphone is like the perfect device. i use all the features, but the calling issues is a BIG Problem

Cg006 – I’ve pretty much determined/verified that the “bar” signal indicator is a sham; I live/work in the city and I am always, ALWAYS at 5 bars, but if I can get >300Kbits/s down and >100Kbits/s up it is a good day – and that’s out on the streets (NB: I am currently deep inside a granite windowless office, and my iPhone has “5 bars” – current speeds are 78D/24U).

The bar indicator just seems to indicate if you “have” signal, not how good it is.

Att has a pretty low churn rate. But now the droid and the iphone may be coming to verizon there churn rate will go up. Just wacth and see

Only because AT&T handcuffs users with its contracts. Free them up, they will leave.

So, what happened to Nation’s fewest drops calls and fastest network coverage, AT&T? Why did it take them so long to realize that their network is a garbage?
Maybe they should stop spending their money on advertising and start working with network.

It’s not that bad, I never have issues, it’s all of you jumping on the bitchfest bandwagon cause you want to throw your two cents in. AT&Ts network averages less than .8% dropped call average. Yes in NY and SF they have more issues than other areas. I hate to mention this though that other carriers have the same issues in specific areas. If you cant wait for AT&T to work on their network then quit your fn bitching and leave. Tired of everyone bitchin about what they are entitled to or not. Do you bitch at your DSL provider when your internet doesnt work as advertised because there are so many people on at 7pm???? No you are just jumping on the topic of the time!!!

just a thought. maybe the FCC didn’t block Verizon from airing those commercials because the government predominantly uses Att and wanted to force them to fix the network woes.

They’re are improving by choking off the data on iPhone’s

    • proven22

Yes they are talking about choking out the 3% who are probably tethering their iPhones because they are too cheap to pay for DSL. These are the ones who are causing the problems not the average consumer who uses the iPhone for what it was designed.

i dont understand how nobody ever points a finger at apple. if the iphone’s reception issues are completely at&t’s fault, don’t you think ALL at&t phones would have the same exact issues (they don’t by the way. my at&t blackberry reception is outstanding). maybe apple needs to find a better rf receiver.

  • ItsMichaelNotMike

Well it was on the news that something like 4% of AT&T users are using 40% of its bandwidth.

So the only thing AT&T is doing is raising prices on its data plans, so to stop those users cold in their tracks.

That’s not a very technical way to resolve the problem.

I am with T-Mobile. I have a feeling all of our unlimited data plans will be a thing of the past quite soon too.

As more and more people use the Net to watch TV or hang out on YouTube, carriers will see that as a money maker.

I suspect that data will be the place where carriers have users bend over every month when the bill is due.

Of course raising prices will have the opposite affect. People will simply stop using their phones for anything data related, except checking e-mails.

People are not going to pay a hundred a month to watch YouTube or TV on their phones.

So data as a revenue stream will dry up as people simply stop using it, unless a carrier then decides to charge heavily for simply checking e-mails and sending text.

I want to know why BGR has removed some of my comments to these obvious Verizon supporters but left in the comments and replies from the rest of the Big Red supporters?????? Hmmmmm, think BGR may be sucking on BigRed’s tit

  • at&thater

I live in NYC and because of what I do I move around the city all day and I’m on my phone often.
ATT service SUCKS in NYC. Call failed, message failed to be sent, etc.. It is so bad that I was thinking of paying the fee to break my contract and move my iphone to tmobile
Everytime you call att they say the same stupid thing (power on and off, get new sim card blahhh) when really they should be looking into improving the service (more cell sites?)
I will give it 2 more months then Im leaving.
