Android isn't so hot in Europe, Nokia and Symbian still number one

News

Google still has a ways to go in Europe where Symbian reigns supreme. Although Europeans easily recognize the Google brand, Android itself is still pretty foreign to them. It’s not surprising since there aren’t many Android offerings there, but numbers are still below expectations. At the end of the third quarter, Android’s market share in Western Europe was at 5.4%. “The lack of devices available didn’t help to raise awareness, though this is expected to change, with more handsets from LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and other vendors hitting the market soon,” says IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo. Right now, Nokia and Symbian are still at the top spot for Western Europe, but Samsung is surprisingly getting close to overtaking Nokia. How many of our European pals out there are using Android devices?

Android has not arrived yet. If all involved can stick to the task, which won’t be easy. you can get some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time…

You can get the DROID in the UK today? Where? I have been checking Expansys daily, but the date keeps slipping back, and I haven’t seen any signs of it anywhere. This might be why Android isn’t so hot here-Apple released the iPhone quickly while there was still lots of hype. By the time we get the DROID, the X10 might be here, the way it’s going. If the manufacturers don’t hurry things up we’ll always be waiting for the next big thing.

And for the record, I have an iPhone, and I couldn’t be happier with it, but I love trying the new OS’s too.

Since all Europeans are fucking homos and anybody who uses a droid is a fucking mega-queer, you’d think there would be tons of androids in Europe.

It’s a wonder how Nokia is the world largest cell phone manufacturer, ( “It is the number one brand in Asia (as of 2007) and Europe (as of 2008)” )
but here in the US it is not overly popular.
I guess this goes along with why the Android is not gaining too much attention in Europe.
Perhaps its a matter of money, or maybe necessities- they just want a phone that can call…

    woops sorry

Francisco Jeronimo is easily the single greatest name I’ve ever heard.

Does this mean that all manufacturers will focus on the Us and we’ll continue to get all the good android phones???? :) (just like symbian in Europe) That would be AMAZING!

  • Prophet

Wow. This is no surprise. Android has to go down as the most overated os of all times.
I wonder y iPhone has blown up so much in Europe n Americas n has smoked n raped bb nokia pre android n wm. Exactly. Developers are already leaving android. Lol. Google fail. Stick to removing spyware from your search toolbar.

iPhone “blew up” in Europe? 40% of iPhone sales originate in the US. That means outside the US, it only has 10% of the smartphone market.

“Spanked and raped” Blackberry? It’s Blackberry, not Apple, that is the number one selling smartphone family in the US, and is second globally to Symbian.

Apple will never pass either RIM or Symbian anytime soon, and will instead be in battle with WinMo and Android for third place. Get ready to watch Apple slowly mimick its destops by falling into a small niche.

Sell in your Europe android doesn’t.
    IPhone does. Lol

Sorry Everyone. I’m just a closet case afraid of my own shadow. And jealous because my cock is smaller than my iPhart phone. And I’m under five foot, and have small hands. And have never been outside, or to school or even a date. And I will die alone.

In french Orange shops, sellers push the customers to buy Nokia first and other non Android phones. All the Android phones on exibition in the shops have no battery for example. There are not updates on Android (last update version 1.1!)

So Google has to move away from Orange like I will do on the end of my contract!

    • pari

then, this might be the case in USA that is exactly opposite also, in US shops, seller push phones of other brands like Apple,Android, LG, samsung instead of NOkia. and hind nokia products from direct eye of customer.

Watch 2010. In europe Android will overtake the iPhone. In Spain the (only) provider of the iPhone (Telefonica) already stopped advertising the iPhone in favor of the Motorola Dext, The HTC Hero can be yours for € 9,- if you move to Orange and Vodaphone Spain is offering unlimited internet for € 15,-/month when getting a HTC Magic.

At my work Androids already outnumber iPhones with a 3 to 1 ratio. As soon as my pre-ordered Milestone arrives there will be one Nokia user less.

Am in the UK and im now getting my first Android phone, a TMobile Pulse (A recent offer had it down for £89 delivered on PAYG, which was a bargain), but im not surprised that Android has struggled in Europe/UK.

Blackberry has a strong name from being the buisness mans phone of choice so can charge higher for the phone/contract. The iPhone had the sex appeal and Apple Brand Loyalty when that came out so a lot of people forgave the massively overpriced handset and tariff that was offered, and the fact that it was only available on 02, strangling any price wars. Android….. had nothing, and came to the market with the same price point and tariffs as the iPhone and so obviously got pummled.

Hopefully now tho the manufacturers are starting to learn, the TMobile pulse for sale for £130 for PAYG or free on an 18 month contract and the Droid for £49.99 on a 24 month contract are both great deals that may pull people away from buying an iPhone.

For the final win with Android, manufacturers, please stop making these phones exclusive to only one Phone company!

  • Morten

There are many reasons why Android isn’t popular in Europe.

The most important one is probably that there is no marketing for it. We dont even have Motorola in many countries, so I have to by my Milestone from a import company. Most people have no clue that there is an OS on phones, much less what the fuck Android is.

Another thing: No truly good phones even exist (well, until the DroidMilestone, IMO). You had to compromise.

    Pick one or two:
    Crappy OS
    Crappy phone
    Locked down
    No HW keyboard

From my experience here in the UK, the major phone retailers such as Carphone Warehouse lack a real awareness of smartphones. They’re more focused on the brand of the phone than the phone’s OS/capabilities. So the smartphone market is limited to BB, iPhones, half of the “must haves” like the Palm Pre and a few of the network-aligned models like T-Mobile’s Pulse.

I asked at Carphone Warehouse and T-Mobile whether they had any plans to get the Motorola Droid in. Their answer: “No.” But what about it being the most exciting Android device to date? “We don’t sell Motorolas any more. No one wants them.” I think the RAZR was the last hyped Motorola device agressively marketed by networks & retailers. Surprise.

Ignorant question: Why ISN’T Nokia more supported in the U.S.? A part of me doubts its simply because the carriers “don’t want to”… there must be something more to it. Is it Nokia? Because the closest real iphone killer has got to be the N900 AND it can utilize US T-mo’s 3G which means… T-mo is f’n stupid for not subsidizing it.

I used to love Nokia phones, but all the U.S. carriers (T-mo especially)have these days are the Nokia dumbphones. The only way I’ll ever get my hands on a N900 is to drop $600 and order one from Dell. Give me the option for Nokia, and I’ll have no problem dropping Android.

I agree with others: This is more of a reflection on marketing and not actual love/hate feelings towards the brands.

lack of unlimited data penetration among the hoi poli is really holding them back. iphone customers not withstanding the feature phone users just aren’t ready to pay more for service.

  • nils

As soon as there is a good Android phone on the europen market i will definetly buy.
All carriers, in sweden at least, only have their focus on the freakin iphone.
Hope they’ll get some courage soon.
