Sholes Tablet

Man is our Mandarin rusty! Our friends over at Mobile Android China seem to have of the first live photos of the Motorola Sholes Tablet (codename). The specs that we’ve been given to mull over are pretty impressive: 550MHz OMAP TI 3430 processor (same as the DROID), 3.7″ touch screen, 800 x 480 resolution, HDMI port, 3.5mm headset jack, UMTS/HSPA, 8 megapixel camera, and a xenon flash; all running on Android 2.0, probably 2.1 at time of launch. While we’re not exactly thrilled with the blue soft touch finish on the back of the device — Napoleon came and went — we hope this little number makes its way out of Motorola’s R&D department and onto the market here in the States soon, ’cause we likey.Read

Snapdragon + Processor 1 Ghz = Price will high.
Toshiba TG01 has price more than USD 1,000
SE XPeria X10 rumour price USD 999.
Speed not so fast like Motorola Droid / Milestone. We can look / compare with Toshiba TG01.

Get used to seeing HDMI ports on VZW handsets in 2010…DLNA here we come!

    • hehe

I am curious as to some of the uses of a HDMI port on a phone for you average consumer? Not bashing, really, give me some advantages…I am really curious?

      • SimpleAnswer

These phones are now HD multimedia devices. Being such it makes sense that you could show a video contained on the device to a TV.

      • James

Netflix stream via wifi in the future. (in 720p hopefully)
I have hundreds of videos on my android. i could show them on the TV instead of the Computer.

I just cant believe that we now have more information about a sholes tablet than we do about the HTC Passion which was supposed to come out during the 2009 holiday season. Starting to believe the Passion doesnt exist.

  • hehe

Cliq, really? That phone is a joke even to the upcoming Motorola Calgary on VZW, and vzw has four other Moto phones, but that is history, I said Lately(meaning now and up and coming phones)…ooohh T-Mob has the Cliq, great commercial, not so good phone.

    • tande04

Calgary and Cliq are almost the exact same phone spec wise.

Number of moto phones doesn’t really point out much either. T-mobile has 3 right now and in the past had some of Moto’s more flagship phones including the ZN5 which was a big push for them at one point and the Sidekick Slide.

Plus the radio specs throw VZW out the window.

      • hehe

What I was more talking about with the Cliq and Calgary was the build of the phone. Maybe i am mistaken, but the build of the Cliq is closer to say a Samsung Rogue (not a bad phone) and the Calgary is closer to the Droid but aimed at a younger crowd. I have a Droid now and I have never felt a better made smartphone ever. And like I said earlier, I beleive this is T-Mob Europe. So this would be the GSM Europe version, and there should be only be a CDMA version here in the states, unless VZW only cared about getting exclusivity on the first Droid because they knew the Passion was coming, then T-Mob USA may get it too. I just think it is less likely, but it would sure help T-Mob with a nice Premium handset like this. Plus, arent they getting touch hd2 also??

      • tande04

No the build of the of the Calgary is supposed to be pretty shitty. You’re right, both are cheap build targeted at younger (cheaper) markets.

There is nothing one way or another to point to it definitively VZW. You may be right there could be a CDMA variant out there but there isn’t any reason to really believe that. If you look at the roadmap that leaked all of these phones one is T-mobile, one is VZW, and one looks to be AT&T. Then there is this one and a 5th that we haven’t heard anything else about.

VZW seems perfectly content to let Droid be their flagship but they’re obviously releasing “droid” handsets from other manufactures (HTC and that weird one that no one has ever heard of). Its perfectly possible they don’t want another flagship to cannibalize sales and thats all the more reason they’re not going to get this phone.

Yes, T-mob USA is also rumored to be getting hd2 and the n900. They’ve got plenty of room in their line up for those and this though. After starting the android phones they haven’t had a flagship one for awhile.

      • Riles

This seems like slightly odd logic, you say that Verizon doesn’t have room in their lineup for a new flagship phone probably 3 months after the Droid release and yet T-Mob USA has room for 3 flagship devices that are all scheduled for similar release dates?

      • tande04

Well t-mobile has a lot of room in their line up.

The closest flagship they have is either a 2 year old android handset or a 1 year old android handset with 2 year old specs.

Its admittdly a bit of a flip. I used to think that T-mobile had a pretty strong line up but they’ve fallen behind a bit.

I don’t think its odd for them to have a solid Windows phone, a solid Meamo (sp?) phone and a new solid android phone.

VZW on the other hand has most of those slots covered and multiple rumors of more good offerings coming up.

      • Riles

I realize T-Mob has no real flagship right now, that is exactly the problem with the assumption that they would suddenly obtain 3 all within a couple months of one another, why would HTC, Nokia, and Motorola all go with the 4th largest carrier in the U.S. with their flagship devices all at once. Verizon has double T-Mobs customers so can much more easily accommodate multiple flagship devices.

      • tande04

‘Cause it isn’t a matter of them going to T-mobile its a matter of T-mobile going to them.

Regardless of how much “sense” it may make thats certainly the way the rumors are going.

  • Mike P

My pants just got a little messy.

  • joe cool

i think q3 cause u know apple will have a new iphone so this could compete

  • warrentotheg

No, that is not a stylus, by the hdmi port. It’s for a lanyard. Wearing phones around your neck is huge in Asia. We have “ice”, they have phones.

Phone does seem a bit thick, bit if it doesn’t have that chin at the end and no qwerty slideout, I think it will be a welcome change. Hard to tell the thickness in these Lil snapshots anyways.

Just returned my Droid. Got it on launch day. Had horrible reception l, in places my POS Pearl (also Verizon) had it. Also, kept force closing apps all the time. Both 1st and 3rd party ones. Yes, I used the task manager…. Like a mo fo.

Both keyboards were ass on it too. The onscreen one, required you to be so precise with key presses, not to mention there was no option to turn off haptic feedback, when using the phone dialer.

Sexy screen, great video, but the form factor, reception and software were subpar.

I have the umost confidence in Motos comeback and I presume some if not all of my software gripes will be addressed, come the rumored December 11th software update.

Ps, Glansburg, no one likes you. Go back to drawing pictures of dicks all day with Seth.

    • tande04

I was trying to use the 3.5 jack as reference.

It takes up almost the entire depth of the phone where as if you look at a Droid its about half (the keyboard half).

It is tough to tell on these little shots but I think its going to be quite the thin handset.

  • Mrwirez

Good to see Moto coming back.

  • depmod

Nice review. Very glad to hear about the 8mp camera!!! Finally Moto is giving a little attention to camera.

    • kamyk

So we should expect something hilarious from 8mpx in Moto?? I have a lot of Moto’s in past and I have to say that SE have better camera (I mean 3 and 2 mpx) but its only my objections.Maybe 8mpx will be breakthrough . I have n97 but I’m not using it to take pics, maybe sometimes. BTW anyone know why my n97 takes pictures with some light shining, it looks like I catch some ghost on my pictures and I can actually use them in any way … I think its time for new phone ;)

    Motorola Invests in Sensitive Object
    From: “Motorola Investor Relations”
    To: motorolazine@yahoo.com

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. and PARIS, Dec 03, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced that Motorola Ventures, the company’s strategic venture capital arm, made an investment in Sensitive Object, a leader in multi-touch anywhere platforms and natural user interface (NUI).

The company was created in October 2003 with an innovative and patent-protected technology capable of “tactilizing” any surface. This unique software technology leverages acoustics to analyze sound waves departing from the point of a touch to precisely and cost-effectively transform any product into a touch device. Sensitive Object’s ReverSys((R)) software can be deployed in any product benefiting from “touch-based” user interfaces including touch screen and touch control in various markets such as mobile devices.

Sensitive Object’s Anywhere MultiTouch(TM) platform extends tactilization to any surface of a device allowing for virtual controls and next generation user-interfaces. As touch and haptics have become standard interaction expectations for personal computing and handheld devices, Sensitive Object demonstrates that acoustic (vs. resistive, capacitive, and optical) tactilization is the state of the art in terms of both performance and cost, and its platform will set a new standard for full 3D device tactilization.

“Natural user interface (NUI) and in particular interacting with a device through touch is an area of rapid development and great excitement,” said Reese Schroeder, managing director, Motorola Ventures. “Sensitive Object provides an innovative and unique approach allowing new ways of interaction. We’re most excited to be involved in their growth and success.”

“We are excited to be working closely with the Motorola team. Motorola is a perfect partner for our disruptive touch solution considering Motorola’s innovative and successful history with mobile phones,” said Herve Martin, chief executive officer of Sensitive Object.

    About Sensitive Object

Sensitive Object is a spin-off from the French Science National Research Centre (CNRS). Sensitive Object has been created in October 2003 and by August 2004 has received funding to speed up its development from Sofinnova Partners, a venture capital firm. Sensitive Object has a workforce of more than 20 engineers and has operations in Paris and Singapore. For more information please visit http://www.sensitive-object.com.

I don’t read Mandarin, but the website after the jump mentions “…Android 2.0…Motoblur UI…” Is this going to be the default interface?

    • http://www.motorolazine.biz MotoZine

Yes, UI Motorola Blur is default for Motorola Sholes Tablet but is same like Motorola CLIQ / DEXT also can use customize UI.
