Android 21 Hero

Alright HTC Hero owners: backup your handset, brew yourself a strong cup of coffee, and get ready to RTFM, because an unofficial Android 2.1 ROM — complete with Sense UI — is available for your handset. A few days back we reported that Android 2.1 was spotted running on the Hero, but now, courtesy of XDA-developers, the rumored build is on the intertubes for all to download. Come on, try it out, we know you’re curious; don’t forget to backup your data, and be sure to let us know how it goes in the comments.

    • idroidberrydow

i second that. i love my eris but it needs more speed. i am using the pdanet tether right now to post this. works good and easy to set up.

      • Wabem

Its GSM only :- / … XDA is working on some things on it in the CDMA section though!

  • Maulik

    tht is very nice

And I’m in Canada. An early adopted of a
HTC Magic, and stuck with 1.5.
When will I see an official update for Sense UI and 1.6 or 2.0?
I guess I’m forced to Root my phone to get the full functionality. I love my Magic. I just want it to be as good as the Hero at least.

We need some Dragon/Passion (@ Verizon) updates as I am about to pull the trigger on the Eris. And we need absolute confirm that this 2.1 update applies to the Eris. Yeah, I know, me me me.

    • BobH

Sorry. Eris is not the Hero (jsut a close cousin). Different network too. Hopefully soon it will have 2.1… but it may take a few months.

  • tRICKster

Did anyone here actually install 2.1?
Sorry if I missed it buried in all of the iPhone chatter.

  • chingy

i friggin can’t stand WMO! minus well have a crank on your phone for power as well.

  • hehe

Update on the 11th for Droid and Eris, and another Jan 22nd, thats all for now, believe what you like

  • Donna

With brand new phones having the old version 1.5 and 1.6… and others having v2.1… what in the world is Google thinking?

Do *YOU* want to buy a phone that has an operating system that is 2-3 verions out-of-date????

  • wallyson

I have an unlocked Hero here in the States. What’s on this?

  • BobH

Hope this means they have Sense UI for the Eris and for the future stuff (dragon / passion/ other)… just need the hardware to get spit out…..

  • conquistador

Wow, I love how no one has actually commented on the original point of the story and talked about 2.1 on Hero. iPhone? Droid? Hero? Who the fuck cares? I don’t see why people feel like they have to shove their opinions down everyone else’s throats. So you have a boner for you phone. That’s awesome. Good for you. Just take it to a thread that’s actually dedicated to it.

  • Adam

But apparently your grammar is not.

You obviously do not have a droid (keep in mind this post is not about the droid, but the Android OS) so take your bullshit opinion elsewhere.

The butthurt is strong in this iDiot.

  • invalidpost

    iSmoke.

  • Zaggs

Yeah they would get Iphones, if they wanted to stare at the same screen over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Also if they wanted to pay for every single app they wanted.

  • Enough is Enough

The Iphone may be the best device for *you*, however as a business user, the Android devices worked out very well for us. Our company purchased 7 for the directors here, both Motorola Droid and HTC Eris, and they all love it. Oh yes, 4 of them coming from a Iphone.

Android devices wouldn’t exist if the Iphone was on Verizon? Are you certified insane? No, wait…. You’re just a stupid kid who thinks you know everything….

This update gives the HTC folks the turn by turn navigation, Sense with all its beauty, synchronizing works great with MS Exchange Server, not to mention all the improvements from 1.6.

I’m glad you’re happy with the Iphone, but I (for one) am not willing to just let “daddy Jobs” tell me what I can and cannot do with MY device.

Android has a place in this market today and for the future.

  • Adam

True. I’ve changed my home screen half a dozen times since I got my Droid. Paid for a few apps, grabbed a shit ton of free ones.

To me, the fact that the Android OS is open source is reason enough to dump the iPhone for an Android device, however I have never owned an iPhone, so I cant really comment. I do have a buddy who has one and is planning on dumping it, and AT&T in favor of verizon and Android at the end of his contract term.

    Go banana!

  • JakeMG

Why does everyone ignore the signs and feed the trolls? Just downrank them and ignore them.

  • StevenGlansburg

I really doubt you are taking advantage of it being open source if you are just downloading apps.

  • Matt Thompson

    Don’t breathe this!
