Reports of dead and damaged Core i7 iMacs on the rise

News

broken-imac

As if waiting weeks to receive a custom ordered Core i7 iMac wasn’t bad enough, Apple forums the world wide web over are filling up with reports of computers showing up with broken displays an/or simply not booting up. Giz seems to think that the packaging might be inadequate for the 27″ behemoths and the bumpy journey from China to Anytown, USA is what’s causing the issue, but one would like to think that Apple, the masters of packaging, wouldn’t make such an amateur mistake. Thankfully it seems that Apple is taking this in stride and being quite helpful to those experiencing issues, but this whole situation is probably stressful enough for some to reach for their cigarettes and… Oh, wait. That’s not a good idea.

Just like the commericials say, highest customer satisfaction!

Oh, wait, I just read the article…

  • Bender13

Received my i7 on 11/19 with no problems. Should remind everyone that those suffering with problems should complain the most – but not all are junked on arrival. Do feel badly for those with junked computers because it’s a huge computer and not fun to re-box up.

  • Paul

    Fail!
One of the many reasons I wouldn’t never buy anything from Apple. I can get PC with same specs like what? 1000$? Damn I am happy I am not part of the cult and would then have to buy this kind of crap. Feel sorry for you cult members.

    • Galen20K

      You are so right paul!

    • Mike

      Here we go again…

A computer is often worth more than the sum of its parts, first of all. And secondly, show me a $1000 that can run MacOS X (legally & with vendor support, that is).

While I don’t relish spending more than necessary for anything, I would much rather spend $1600 for a Mac than $1000 and be stuck with Windows, thank you very much.

    • ccae

How many PCs have a 27″ IPS screen with an LED backlight for that price?

    • Dan

Actually, good luck getting a computer and a 27″ IPS-based monitor for $1000.

  • Galen20K

That’s because Macs and Apple in general sucks and is of Very Poor quality. Cheapest shiny materials and charge 100 times more than the ACTUAL quality of their products. Anybody who has or is going to buy apple products are chumps imho.

    Have a nice day!

  • Spennie

I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say Macs and Apple suck (though I do sincerely hate them), but I’d much rather get the parts and put everything together myself. Can’t do that with a Mac.

    APPLE SUCKS

  • KRC

That last comment was incredibly insightful. The CEO and shareholders better take notice!

  • Mrwirez

The world is flooded with PC’s.. why buy a Mac?

    • ChocoTaco

That’s how it’s historically been. Mac wouldn’t have the customers it had without their iPods. They got ‘em young with their music and advertising which swayed them into their overpriced, underdeveloped, barely supported computer line. The Mac crowd, with the sole exception of audio and video editors (the only reason I could understand using a Mac), are form-over-function users or the ‘trendy’ (read: highly suggestible type/unabe to think for themselves) user. Frankly, it’s no surprise they’re so easy to rip off.

Really can’t agree with you here. Checked out a Dell laptop and a MBP, each with similar configurations to run high-end CAD and construction project scheduling. The Dell ended up about $100 more. I paid about $3k for my CAD app, and didn’t spend $6500 – per year – for AutoCAD and support. I paid $300 for Merlin, and didn’t spend $999 for MS Project. All this, multiplied by 5 for me and my four employees? Oh, and I needed less than an hour to create a Boot Camp partition and install existing XP licenses for existing licensed SW we need on occasion. Office was a wash, as was CS4 – same price for both. Just from the CAD app that works for what we need with AutoCAD compatibility, I got a “free” computer for each workstation. Just a different perspective.

      • ChocoTaco

You would get royally hosed paying more for a Dell than a Mac. Generally, Mac doesn’t even offer the kind of hardware you can have on a high-end Windows laptop anyway, so I’m willing to bet the Dell had better specs on paper. The real beef I have is with people that piss away money on a Mac DESKTOP. Seriously? You spent how much money for what? The only way to go with a desktop is to build your own, with either Windows or a Linux-based OS. As far as laptops go, I’d never get a Macbook either. They run far too hot, are way too much money, their keyboards lack any kind of tacticle feedback and they don’t run the majority of applications out there. Junk.

  • Jarred

I’ve had Mac’s since OS9, havent complained once. I can see the reason to hate though, if you just can’t afford it mind as well bash it. Yes, they cost more. Have I ever had one crash, get a virus, or in general just fall apart. Nope. I still have my eMac I bought right when OSX dropped. Still kicking and works fine, It’s got to be 4+ years old or something like that.

    • Spennie

I agree some people bash because they can’t afford it or just simply can’t justify spending that kind of money on something that becomes outdated in a few months, but OS X still has it’s share of problems. My biggest beef with Mac are the fans that believe their system is completely immune to a nuclear holocaust, much like a cockroach.

Wrap your mind around this: Hackers develop virus’ to steal information or gain access to a computer for any number of personal reasons. If you were a hacker, would you spend your time making virus’ for 89% of the world’s computer population that uses Windows or the 6% that Mac holds? Wait till Macs and PCs are equal then tell us how virus free your system is.

      • http://www.nimraynn.net Mike Oldfield

I agree with what you are saying there.

I am a Mac user, I do audio editing, I do photography, and I do a little (not a lot) of video editing. The software I use is a lot cheaper, and I personally find, more powerful, for Mac OS X than it is for Windows.

I’m not someone who thinks they’re invincible, and I’ve got just as much firewall protection and antivirus protection as I would normally have on any Windows or Linux based computer. Just becuase the OS is targetted less, doesn’t make it invincible. I hate these people who think they are invincible.

    • Ender

I have a 12 year old PC that still runs great, what does that prove? lol

      • Mekk

You’re right Win 98 was by far the best, wish I could downgrade to 3.1 though

  • Martin G

    BWAHAHAHAHAHA, “Macs just work” bwahahahahaha

    • betchplz

Of course. That’s why they never need security or stability updates, snow leopard was perfect out of the box!

  • badchad

You mean some of those “you get what you pay for”, really well-built macs that “just work”…don’t actually work?

Look at it this way: Even if you can’t turn it on, you can still perform the main function most Mac users look for.

You can prop it open in a Starbucks, drink free-trade, organically grown coffee, read a brochure about saving the whales and pretend that you are doing something creative.

You can pretend that you’re making an “independent youtube flick”. You can pretend that you’re mixing together some new indie rock, or something similarly creative.

Remember, just carrying a mac is like having an “icool” app on at all times.

    • Martin G

perfect description of the average mac user

    • http://hexabites.studiodyv.com Delumen

You sir, have made my day.

  • Hate everything GRR!

    @ Jarred and Spennie:
STFU with that noise you flaming trolls. It’s the same damn insult that Sony fanboys make and it’s riduclous. “You don’t like it cause you can’t afford it”. That’s about as offensive as the Jew remark and somehow twice as ignorant.

Tell me, you 2 Apple fanboys: what kind of car do you drive and do you rent or own your own house?
Not that I expect you to tell the truth, but take a good look at what you have before making asshole comments. Saying that people don’t like Macs because they can’t afford them is pretty idiotic if you’re living in an ghetto apartment, eating Ramen noodles everyday and driving a 1998 Mazda Protege… but hey, you have your Mac. Good for you.

Fucking elistist Apple jerks… and you wonder why people hate on you as much as they hate on Apple? The fanboys help fuel the fire.

So, by your logic… that means I must fucking hate Rolex, Ferrari, rare diamonds, Rolls/Bentley and your mothers because I can’t afford them.

Do yourselves a favor and drop the part-time sociologist bit cause you don’t know shit about people at all.

    • Spennie

Guess what, genius, if you read my post I said that I’m sure some people bash it because they can’t afford it, which is a fact. Look at the comments, most are about how expensive they are. And if you read my earlier post I state that I hate Apple and Macs. You’re an idiot. Likening my comment to a racist Jew remark proves how dumb you really are.

Please, for the rest of the world, commit suicide. You’re ignorance and stupidity are the reason Mac fanboys look down on the Windows community. For the last time, I hate Macs and prefer building my own computer, botard.

      • Spennie

Oops sorry man, posted before I saw follow up. I was “agreeing” with him, just keeping an open mind.

  • Hate everything GRR!

Oh Spennie, my apologies. You didn’t deserve all that, but don’t agree w/ the fanboy next time.

    • Joe

Dude there’s nothing wrong with Macs. Its a good OS that works very well, its just that its overpriced as hell. Some people made the comment that if i couldn’t afford it might as well as bash it. That’s the most idiotic comment i’ve ever read. I can afford to buy a Mac its just that i don’t want to. Like others have said I can spend less money and get a computer with better specs. Viruses? Well maybe you should stop looking at porn, opening emails from people you don’t know or visiting questionable sites. Would i buy a Mac if it was reasonably price? No, cause i like using Windows.

      • ChocoTaco

“Works well” is subjective. If by “works well”, you mean costs 30% more for a platform that can’t run the majority of applications available, then no, it doesn’t work well at all. If by “works well”, you mean looks trendy, then yes, it works well. If by “works well”, you mean the user is so incompetant, they can’t browse their 100′s of porn sites without getting a trojan on a Windows machine, then it may work well. Depends on what you use your computer for. If you want to pay more for safer porn and a more stable iTunes, then it works well.

It is 100% true that you can build a Windows/Linux box with the same components as a Mac for a lot less. If you do that and you are happy with the result, that is fantastic. However, others have very good reasons for not taking that route:

    1. Aesthetics: Mac hardware design might not appeal to you personally, but you can’t argue that it is engineered and designed to very high standards. It certainly looks more attractive than anything you could build on your own.

    2. Function: The included suite of applications in OS X does everything that 90% of users need. That seamless integration is very attractive to some people.

    3. Ease of use: As a traditionally PC guy, I’ve helped a lot of people with their Windows problems. The amount of crap that comes preinstalled on Dell computers (much less what the users accidentally install) is ludicrous. Macs don’t come bundled with crapware and they aren’t as susceptible to malware or viruses. People who aren’t as tech savvy would often benefit from spending a little more on a Mac.

There are certainly good reasons to buy a PC over Mac, but you shouldn’t make the mistake of assuming that those reasons apply to everyone.

  • Quix

Wow, the Apple haters are in a serious lather today. Rising Mac sales must really have you tools’ panties in a wad. Unbelievable.
