Some healthy advice: Don't smoke near your Mac

Mac aficionados that also enjoy a pack of Marlboros every now and then might want to keep their smoke as far away from their computer as possible for it appears Apple doesn’t take kindly to the habit. Yesterday, Consumerist ran a story about two customers that were denied warranty repairs to their MacBook and iMac by Apple (both had purchased extended AppleCare warranties) simply because the machines were exposed to second-hand smoke. Both appealed to the office of Steve Jobs to no avail. The strangest thing, however, is the explaination that one received from someone at Jobs’ office: the nicotine released from cigarettes is classified as a bio-hazard by the Operational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and as such, Apple employees are within their rights to refuse to work on a machine that has been in contact with the chemical. The only suggestion Apple offered was to take the computers to be fixed somewhere else on their dime. Obviously these two cases are an anomaly, but the question still remains: should Apple be able to walk away from its obligation as set out in the AppleCare agreement because of a little bit of smoke? Just to be clear, there is nothing in the AppleCare fine print that even comes close to singling out smoking as being prohibited.

That is the great and important information to keep in mind for safety.I think many people don’t hesitate to smoke while working on any system or any other tech machine so now they will be aware.

I LOVE IT! Smokers have a selfish, disgusting habit that the rest of us are expected to smile and put up with as the filth they spew from their lungs poison ours. I applaud Apple for having a backbone.

Frst off I’ve never smoked except weed back in the 1960s I suppose if there was heavy smoking in a small room while on the computer that it could cause some damage although I don’t think this was the case here being PC was..Im 59 and its interesting to see each generation come along and fight its given battles the 60s was an interesting time and we had our heard mentality as well however the PC now a days the blind following on global warming,Obama, second hand smoke ect.. could use a little more objective ”googling” You’ll be arguing with your friends in know time..

While I’m not a smoker, never have been, I call BS. Just another way for Apple to increase their proffit margin.
“Does this smell like smoke to you?”
    “Ummm… Yup.”
    “VOID!”

“Apple employees are within their rights to refuse to work on a machine that has been in contact with the chemical.”
What about all of the factory workers that manufacture the actual parts that go into apple products. I wonder if they are exposed to any kind of toxins. I guess it matters where you are on the food chain.
