BlackBerry Pearl 9100 gets pawed

Hardware

BlackBerry 9100

After RIM’s release of the BlackBerry Pearl 8220 flip-phone it was hard to tell what direction the former candy bar style handset was headed, and rumors of the models demise began to circulate around intertubes. However, the rumors of its death were greatly exaggerated as an updated 3G Pearl has been whispered for months, and it looks like RIM has gone back to the Pearl’s form-factor roots with its latest spin on the classic, the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 — code name Striker or Stratus. The 9100 prototype in question is a GSM device with RIM’s now standard optical trackball, SureType keyboard, 3G, Wi-Fi, and BlackBerry OS 5.0; it also incorporates many of the stylistic changes of the BlackBerry Bold 9700. We’ll stay on top of this one and provide you more details as they become available.

The question is, does anyone care? I dont see BGR ask this question with this ugly phone and stupid keyboard but they asked that question to Palm Pixi, btw I dont have Palm phone, so dont call me fanboy. I rather spend my money on Pixi with touch screen and full qwerty keyboard than this pain in the a** keyboard. Good luck with this phone if u ever wanna order pizza with BB’s web browser or go to Ebay’s website, just few of the example. I know Blackberry fanboys will hate me cause “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH”

got word that Rogers will be carrying it before Christmas

You sound like a deranged Sprint employee and personal advocate of Palm that nobody really wants anymore.

If your only criteria for a mobile phone is your ability to order a pizza then you have more issues that we really need to discuss.

Seriously, how often do you need to order a pizza with your phone’s web browser? Much easier to call.

Wow, finally RIM is offering an upgraded device for those of who love the short form suretype keyboard. My fingers are way too large for all of these small form keyboards so I stuck with the 7130 which still works and serves my original intent which was email, phone and texting. I don’t have any interest in the full keyboard to occupy space when I would prefer the larger screen.

@ Gina I ordered stuff online when I was in meeting, so don’t assume. I said I didn’t have Palm phone and I don’t even like Palm. People just hate Sprint and Palm in general. Hey, Verizon and ATT will get Palm phones too. I have BB Curve but I use it as alarm clock cause BB is overrated. I don’t work for Sprint, I just wanna mess with fanboys or girls. People who use BB mostly only email and text, oh and talk (if BIS and BES are on)

@ crazymobileman: the BB Pearl line is not aimed at people who want/need full QWERTY phones. They’re aimed at getting people who buy standard keypad phones for their small size to switch to a BB smartphone. If you’re a heavy text user, you’re probably not going to be interested in this phone. But if you’re new to smartphones, they tend to be very attractive. Besides, the BB SureType is really quite nice for texts and emails. Not great for complex URLs, but then again you need to look at the phone’s target market.

the suretype keyboard is perfect for texting. the 8120 still has best keyboard of any type I have ever seen, the iPhone keyboard is a close 2nd

The only thing that needs work is typing in urls

I 2nd that on the SureType keyboard, I’ve had my pearl 8130 on Verizon for about a year and I absolutely love the keyboard. I took an online typing test on it and averaged 52wpm. Pretty cool when you can type faster on your phone than a vast majority of people on regular keyboards. I’ve been dreaming of a revamped Pearl for months. Now if Verizon would just pick this up before Christmas…
