Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 aims high at $879, available Q1 2010

Retail

Sony Ericsson has us scratching our heads just one day after we spent some time with its new XPERIA X10 smartphone. During our lunch meet-up, SE told us it was hoping to work with U.S. carriers in getting the X10 into the pockets of Americans on the cheap. We’re still hoping that SE will make this happen, but a new rumor would see the X10 retail for a whopping $879 when it hits the market during the first quarter of 2010. We know that SE is hoping to get back on the relevance map and turn a profit while it’s at it, but a sky-high price tag on a device that failed to knock our socks off probably isn’t going to cut it with consumers.

How could they even think about pricing it higher that the iPhone? FAIL…

      Well, let’s see…
8 mpx camera with flash/smile detection
      takes pictures at night
      4.0″ capacitive screen
hi resolution 854×480 9:16 aspect ratio
      1 GHZ CPU
      Multitasking
Get your apps anywhere you want
      Removable memory
      Removable Battery

You might be right if we compare with iPhone 4G or 5G

So Motorola releases an Android 2.0 device in November and SE thinks they can throw a 1.6 device at us 3 months later for a few hundred dollars more? Wow. I remember telling people(non phone junkies) how cool my next phone was going to be, then it took another year to come out and had been quite easily surpassed. SE is great in R and D but terrible in factory to sales floor.

what is sonyericsson thinking? $879 for an android device. there are cheaper options available. i was going to pick this up, but at that price it will remain where it is. i could pick up an n97 and a g1. forget you sonyericsson

I think we need a valid reason to rate some comments down. It just seems like a fanboy came in here and rated the last 4 comments down for no particular reason at all!

I think Sony Ericsson is going mad, doing stupid things, while getting broken

Is this the 6000 SEK price converted to USD? Because then, the article is a fail. In Europe that’s the average price you have to pay for an unlocked smartphone. Both N97 and 3GS have a higher price off-contract.

      Pretty sure you’re right.

Is there any division of Sony that doesn’t have it’s head up it’s rear end?

There’s a reason why Sony is suffering so badly (Bravia, PS3, now X10)…they’re outrageously overpriced products. They’re finally turning a profit on the PS3 since dropping the price. This phone may have an edge up on the Motorola Droid in terms of internal specs but it lacks in overall technical prowess. Android 1.6? C’mon.

Who the hell is going to pay that much for a cell phone?

  • Super Mario

You amreicans are so damn lucky.. You find outrageous that a phone costs 800usd.

In croatia, which is not a third world country and in 2 years is going to be in EU, and where average pay is around 1000usd, Nokia N97 costs 1200usd without contract. Our maket alows that. Daaaaaaammmn..

Right on Mario, almost ditto here in South Africa. I’m a middle-aged average working guy but the cost of this phone ‘equivalates’ to almost a full months gross salary.
I’ve broken my back paying for necessary high spec SE’s for many years. But the price of this phone is way out of line and so it stops right here. Yeh, my USA friends have a much higher monthly buying power than we in SA have.

  • Bratag

Makes the $550 for the N900 you were all bitching about price look pretty good huh :)

  • Llcoolvt

It doesnt help that the value of the Dollar is at rock bottom at this time, but hopefully it will get better by the time the phone gets released… Either way I have waited a long time for that phone and the price is not going to stop me

  • Dumb

I think we need to get one thing Strait. If this is the European Price Converted to USD then this means nothing to the US market. They Change the prices for different continents. Second Drazy your dumb. If the Company Sony’s products are doing bad, PS3, BRAVIA, VAIO ETC. That has no relation to the separate company SONY ERICSSON.

  • Llcoolvt

I buy my phones straight from Europe when I travel so that makes a huge difference to me Dumb

This handset will not move great numbers with Android 1.6 while there are great alternatives for much less. Sony’s marketing seems to be very out of touch with what the consumer wants.

  • Me

And this is why Sony ericcson is going out of business sooner than later!

  • esomi

lol, here in my country,in europe we love X10 and think the price is not expensive

  • Laura

can’t afford a $30 gym membership so what makes them think i am gonna pay $900 for a cellphone we are in economic crisis here now a wealth crisis of not knowing how to spend our money this will probably go to all the celebs who can actually afford the phone

  • fffp

    wow, expensive…

  • pearlyn
