Chrome OS due out in one week?

Well, what do we have here? The Washington Post is reporting it has reliable intel indicating that Google’s much hyped Chrome OS will be released for download within the next 7 days. Ba-zing. The piece is a little light on fact and high on speculation about the unveiling, and we encourage you guys continue with the speculation in the comments. Would a Chrome OS powered netbook motivate any of you to jump in the market? Or is the thought of a cloud-centric OS a little to much to swallow right now?Read

After at least 20(very conservative number) computers running various windows operating systems have crashed(beyond repair) in my family, I am definitely looking at new options(or even old ones). I really like ubuntu using google chrome browser. Its a great alternative.
Google is involved in a lot of great projects at the moment. I started with the G1 and Android os. Now I’m a androidian for life. Then got chrome browser….love it! Now I have a google wave preview account…….people…..it is sweeeeeeeeet! Are they going to integrate all this goodness into Chrome os???? I think yes.
I can’t wait for Chrome os to come out. Microsoft and apple have some stiff competition coming. Its about time they had some.

And so continues Google’s quest of world domination.

hasn’t anyone noticed that the Google Chrome logo looks very similar to the “Simon Says” toy that came out a while back ago? Instead, it’s “Google Says” and the world must do.

I’m not as excited about Chrome OS as I am about the fact that under Chrome OS is a Linux Kernel, and the hope that Google won’t try to reinvent the wheel and NOT use the X Window Server in their “New Windowing System…” OK, those are some big dreams, but dreaming that that chain of thinking is correct, it might mean Linux will finally get some REAL (Not WINE based) love from Google for once in life… I mean, honestly, it WOULD be nice to get a functional port of Picasa, or maybe some GMail Video love on a non-windows system…

Chrome OS is gonna be some re-worked Linux. So it’ll probably be good, but let’s see how it’ll compete with other disros. I think only Microsoft has something to loose here. Maybe it’s time they make their own Linux LOL, since it seems everyone is using it now (Mac OS is Linux as well)

    • Tyrell

I’m confused by your initial sentence… Are you saying that it is reworked, therefore holds the potential to be better than other distros of linux? That is, in fact, what I’m afraid of. I want them to do something that SUPPORTS linux as a whole, the other distros included. I want to see Google put a GENUINE INTEREST in the GNU/Linux cause, by building their own distro, and thus requiring of themselves a high standard in their linux-based software products.

My original post was poorly worded… I hope this is better at conveying my point.

      • Rob

@Tyrell. I can’t say if it’s gonna be better or worse than other distros, or how compatible it will be. I’d love if Google would as you say take an interest in Linux. Being an Ubuntu user myself, I know things could be better. There is hope though, Google seems to be behind open source, but I’m afraid they are more interested in their own software being developed, than spending time with already existing distros. We’ll see…

MacOS is BSD based, not linux. At least get your facts straight.

      • Rob

You are right Tim, mis-spoke there

I can’t consider switching until I can edit HD video on it. If it can run Final Cut Pro, and run it faster/more reliably than my Mac, then yeah, I’d consider making the switch. It’s going to have to do a lot of proving itself before that happens, though.

    What? Another O/S.
I was hoping to see Android on PC’s to work along with Phones…

    • Dio

      What? Negative karma?
How can you disagree with that…Android on a PC and Phone to work together, possibly even share the same apps? That could be cool.

you know you guys can try the beta right now right??lol im on chrome os beta as we speak!!haha

Hurray, I certainly want banner ads on my desktop and in my apps. I certainly won’t mind that Google will have a license to use any documents I prepare with it’s web apps. And, of course, no problem with Big Brother monitoring all my activities.

    After all, it’s free.

While it will be nice to have a linux distro with some NORMAL names for programs, don’t expect everything to change over night….

Windows 7 is an incredible piece of software, truthfully I didn’t think microsoft had it in them. Windows 7 will be a very tough nut to crack, I have not met anyone yet that has used it and didn’t think very highly of it.

    • Windows 7

Windows 7 is just Windows Vista SPx. It is esentially the same OS and everyone is proclaiming how great it is and how much Vista sucked. Stupid!

Oh, and another thing. Who said there isn’t a OS war already going on? Like I guess CNET considers Dell selling Ubuntu PCs, some netbooks being loaded with Linux flavors, and Apple’s continuous growth with their computers nothing. The battle going on now may not be full blown, but I think it’s there.

Okay guys. Hold your horses just yet. Like us we are happy for this release but this could be another fake propaganda like what we have a couple of months ago.

As for now, google is still not releasing any updates for the release. If it’s next week, they will release a pre-announcement, ayt?

I saw this first on pandora radio.

new google web browser with customizable skins and OS could be interesting, though, imo.. they need a fresh redisign of their image. the ‘crayola’ theme is getting old.

@Don: It is based on Linux. Runs the Linux kernel and it’s toolchain and thus would have access to same support. Modern Linux has no problem with hardware, and a majority of hardware is supported. Ubuntu did a much better job detecting hardware on my computer than Vista did. Everything was found and had full acceleration with enhanced desktop effects. With Vista I had to install manually a bunch of drivers and software.

  • Steven

im confused, so if this is Linux based.. does it mean it’ll be open sourced and free?
Also i thought it was mainly going to be used for netbooks,
well.. until another os is able to use Direct X (which is a big never) ill be a windows on partition 1.

  • CBoyDave

I’d love to try it out, on a dual-boot netbook anyway. It’ll be interesting to finally get Google take on an OS.
