Motorola DROID and HTC DROID Eris OTA updates rumored to hit December 11?

General

droid-review-1

We’ve barely had any time to breathe since the DROID and Eris have been released, and we’re already hearing that updates may be on their way. These over-the-air updates are said to fix a number of issues with the new phones. So far, it seems that Verizon is fully aware of the bugs and other known problems with the device and it is making sure that these are resolved before snarky nerds get a chance to bite. Some of the issues we’ve heard are hardware related, and some are software related which could imply that Verizon is working closely with Google to come up with fixes. For the complete list as well as what Verizon intends to do with them, hit the jump!

Thanks, Tarun!

    Boy Genius,

It seems alot of us are having issues with atrocious battery life. I myself have taken almost every measure to try to improve it (including running factory default Droid). Is your review unit different than in anyway to the production units? I bought two Droids based off of reviews of the battery life by your site and others.

    Thanks in advance.

I have great battery life. Depending on usage I charge every night or every other night. It’s never died on me yet, but has gone below 15% on a heavy usage day by the time I put it down for the night.

A temporary workaround for the echo issue is to switch to speaker phone mode and back. That fixes the issue for my brother-in-law’s droid.

    YEY! autofocus fix!

  • apollo

Unbelievable — the Droid doesn’t support Yahoo mail even thru POP3 — totally lame — Google should be rammed about this –

    • Doug

Yahoo works on mine, just found a few steps online and now it works perfectly fine

      • aj

Could you send me the online instructions to get yahoo mail on the droid.

    • Hrpc3

or you could use gmail….. the phone is integrated with google for a reason.

      • mike

you can use yahoo email on the motorola droid

    • BlueKnightOne

Yahoo itself blocks POP3 access unless you subscribe to their premium service. This is not the fault of the phone, but an issue with Yahoo.

is it just me or is the MILESTONE and the DROID look like the same phone? how come they aren’t having record breaking sales on either?

Seriously? Some of the best pictures I’ve ever taken on a phone have been on this phone. If you’re really concerned about taking great pictures, why not use a dedicated camera.

  • David

How bout oh i don’t know, activating the multi touch capabilities the hardware has????

  • VZWer

    @ Doug,

please post how you got Yahoo mail to work on yours!

    Thank you.

I think they should include a global font size option. The spare parts app seems to have one but it does not seem to work.

  • Droider

I have been talking to alot of Iphone owners and non of them would switch to a droid they are happy with the phone that have. But many people that would of gone to ATT are sticking with verizon and that was the point of this . I think it will only get better with time.

Still considering whether to buy or not. That echo was noticeable tonight when I tested the Droid and Eris.

Anyone have any comments about voice quality for the receiving party? One of the Blackberrys I used as a comparison seemed to have much better sound.

When recording video there is no video light for recording at night…nor is there an option to activate it…my Samsung Moment by Sprint does it and it has the option…not sure if this is because Droid has 2.0 and the option to activate the light was taken off in this version… :(

Has anyone had an issue with sound ONLY coming through the earpiece speaker? Sometimes when playing music then after a call comes through, all sound would come through the ear speaker instead of loudspeaker. Sometimes it won’t even happen after playing music.
Hopefully they fix this in the Dec. 22 fix, but it doesn’t seem like it from the document release. Hopefully at least in the Jan. update.

    • Rich

Yeah. I had the exact same problem. I removed the battery and forced a reboot. It resolved the problem.

Fingers crossed, it’s back to normal operation — including external speaker working correctly.

  • Lauren

Is there any way to increase font size,,,that works?
When you are in the “I need reading glasses cause I’m in my 40′s”phase of life…the text is really tiny and annoying because I dont want to have to find my “specs” just to see who is calling! HELP!

    • adrienne

having same problem…let me know if you find a solution sucks getting older LOL

They need an official bulletin like this for the Hero from Sprint.

  • Dean

But are they going to fix the Bluetooth headset issue.

I also know that the droid will not work with the Ford sync. It stinks that it doesn’t work with my MINI Cooper.

    • jeremy

      Dean quote
      * I also know that the droid will not work with the Ford sync.*
i dont mean to sound like a flamer but…
      actually you dont know that.

i have a 2009 escape hybrid and the droid connects to sync fine. it downloaded my phonebook, makes calls, and can play music through USB or bluetooth.
i will say though, i have had trouble with changing tracks through bluetooth. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. but USB works flawlessly.
the turn by turn directions even play over the car speakers and pause the music.

I’ve had the sound come out of the earpeice speaker only, and as Rich said, I also just took the battery out for a few seconds and it went back to normal.

I definitely do NOT recommend the htc Eris. It’s SO much slower than the Motorola Droid, not to mention the terrible battery life. I was using it primarily for calls and texting, and yet I couldn’t even make it through one whole day without needing to recharge the battery.

I’m very happy and satisfied with my Droid. :) The only thing I’d like to see happen is an Adobe update. I had problems with a few websites because the current version of Adobe was not new enough.

  • kim

also, i’ve been able to access yahoo mail with no problems. i just go to yahoo.com, click on mal, and it allows me to access it.

good to hear about these updates, but if you are thinking of switching from a blackberry to this device and you rely on corporate email, think hard. there is virtually no mail management capability with the Exchange-compatible mail client on the device. You cant sort by sender (or anything else), the client wont search the corporate address book, attachments are a pain. you dont even see indicators that you have replied to a mail. amazing that Google had a golden opprtunity to blow bberry away given the terrific browser and other capabilities, and totally flubbed mail for road warriors.

You can download Touchdown from the market. It works very well. I have been using it since G1.
