Motorola MILESTONE now official: multitouch, but no Google Maps Navigator

Good news for Android 2.0 hungry Europeans this early afternoon as Motorola has officially announced the European (read: GSM/UMTS) version of the DROID. Dubbed the Motorola MILESTONE, the two handsets appear to be identical spec wise save for the obvious differences in cellular radios. Oddly enough, the MILESTONE will feature one thing on every DROID lovers wish list — multitouch. The reason why the MILESTONE has multitouch while its American cousin does not isn’t clear, but the general feeling is this is directly related to some intellectual property that Apple might or might not own. If any American’s are feeling a bit snookered by this, they can take comfort knowing that they still have the market cornered on Google Maps Navigation as the MILESTONE will instead come pre-loaded with MOTONAV in its place. Italy and Germany will be the first European nations to get the Motorola MILESTONE, with the handset being available from The Phone House, O2 and Vodafone in the latter country starting November 9th.Read

    I’ve been enjoying pinch to zoom on my G1 for ages now, this will be on the droid in a split second…provided that heres a way to root.

    that sounds indeed very good and workable, spiral zoom..

    i hope google navigation will come to europe soon, cause i’d rather have that than (a trial of) MOTONAV..

    I don’t understand why MILESTONE has multi-touch while DROID doesn’t. Is that explained somewhere but I missed it?

      My guess is that Droid is missing multi touch because of Verizon. Verizon launched iDont campaign against iPhone but in their official statement they have mentioned that they are doin everything for iPhone to come to them, so my guess is , they are leaving a window open for iPhone.

      I read it was an agreement google made with apple not to include multitouch on the droid in US markets. I suppose with google not supporting the milestone, there is no need to honor that contract and so you have multitouch, but no google maps.

    Sounds like phandroid.com has the scoop…multitouch IS supported on the DRIOD, but it’s not obvious since the Android 2.0 browser doesn’t support multi-touch. So this is a good thing!…http://phandroid.com/2009/11/03/motorola-droid-multi-touch/

    Spiral zooming is most likely patented by Nokia with Maemo.
