As Bell and TELUS put the finishing touches on their Canada-wide 21Mbps HSPA network that is set to launch next week, press releases announcing their HSPA handsets are coming across the wire at a feverish pace. The latest to be announced is the Windows Mobile 6.5-powered Omnia II which is to be exclusive to Bell. Featuring a 3.7″ AMOLED WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and 7.2Mbps UMTS/HSPA connectivity, the Omnia II is definitely a nice device that will make many a Canadian happy. And so it should, as Canadian’s patriotism will be tested when they see it in shops as it has been designated the “Official Mobile Device of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.” Why? Because Bell sure earned that right after it spent an insane $200mm for the right to be the official communications sponsor of the games. Pricing and a specific release date have not yet been announced, but the Omnia II will be available starting next month. Oh, and just for the record, no, we did not edit in the photo of the curling rock. Bell actually seems to be under the delusion that people in Canada enjoy curling. Tsk, tsk.Read

how is the omnia 2 exclusive to them when it’s coming out for verizon? is it not releasing on verizon anymore?

  • BeSerious

    Exclusive to Canada.

  • scroffy

and the first omnia kicked ass, and still does pretty well…certainly still as fast as the newer htc phones

  • A man

I’m beginning to think this phone is never coming to American soil.

    • StevenGlansburg

50% of phones never come to American soil… and for the 50% that do, they are the bastardized version that is stripped in some way or another :(

don’t hate on curling, that shit is popular up here :p

    • Nerdherder

LOL, curling?? It was sorta popular back when I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. It was really just an excuse to get out of the house and get wasted during the long, cold winters.

  • Who?

It’s going to be so embarrassing when all the athletes during the opening ceremonies are taking pictures with their iPhones.

Who’s in charge of Samsung’s marketing budget?

  • Mog

Anyone else think it’s sort of odd that the “official handset” of the Vancouver Olympics isn’t made by a Canadian company? I mean, that might be understandable if Canada didn’t have any phone companies, but they have, uh, RIM. Who, last I checked, were pretty big, especially in North America.

There could have been a special edition BlackBerry Bold for the new Bell/Telus HSPA+ network. Or maybe even for Rogers’ LTE network, which is trial launching in…Vancouver. It could be colored gold, a gold Bold, get it? “Go for the Bold…” It could be the Bold 10000, “a perfect 10,” ha ha.

But no. Instead, the official handset is…some random Samsung? Yeah, that will reflect Canada’s innovative spirit. Marketing synergy fail.

So now even Canada gets the Omnia II, and the US is still left in the dust?! Non-universal healthcare is one thing, but if Canada has the Omnia II and we don’t, I’m moving up north.

  • Mtsunami31

Samsung Took too long to release this phone on verizon with the new Moto Droid, Eris And Storm 2 good luck trying to sell this one samsung

  • JunJon

aww crapz. this was the phone i was waiting for. and you’re right Mtsunami, Droid is totally making me think twice about the Omnia2. Any advantages Windows Mobile 6.5 has over Android 2.0?

    • scroffy

Advantages? yes, it has been released!

      • stronggeek

LOL! Yes, plus the fact that the droid appears to be faster and that it’s running on it’s own OS and is not just a fancy overlay on top of an aging OS.

I have the original omnia and looked forward to the omnia 2(while waiting I even tried the tp2).

But knowing that the droid was coming I decide to hold off on all purchases to see what the android hype was about.

        Needless to say… I’m a bit excited!

bell has been spending way too much money as of late with the new network infrustructure, the purchase of virginmobile canada, the purchase of the source canada, and spending millions on the olympic campaign. i hope when they realise that people are more interested in cost than what they have, its not too late for them and chapter 11 by 2012.

  • Kjack628
