Motorola Calgary live photos: Verizon's second Motorola Android device

Breaking

If you thought you were in Android heaven, think again. We’ve just been given the go-ahead from one of our Motorola connects, and what you’re looking at is the Motorola Calgary (that’s a codename you might remember) slated to hit Verizon. Let’s focus on what appears to be a pretty popular theme with Motorola’s recent comeback efforts: a decent low-to-mid range handset with BLUR, and a high-end super smartphone, both Android of course. This would give Verizon customers (mostly those fickle teenyboppers) a real smartphone completely positioned for their liking, instead of the featurephones which shall remain nameless that are currently available on Big Red. In terms of hardware, there’s three touch-sensitive Android keys on the display, an optical joystick which we’ve been told performs really well, a workable QWERTY keyboard, and it sounds decent as a phone. The Motorola Calgary also features a 3 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headset jack, GPS, digital magnetometer, Wi-Fi, microSD card slot, and spring-assisted slider.

Our connect has been testing it over the past month and said the OS builds running on it are incredibly smooth as well as responsive. It’s certainly no Droid, but hey, it doesn’t have to be. No hard release date but we might be looking at a Q4 release… Hit the jump for some more pics!

Thanks, Big Ed!

    Thank you for that Phil…
Of course we appreciate the info BGR leaks. Doesn’t mean that we HAVE to only praise the product being leaked.

Obviously lots of people are disappointed with the current state of the looks of this phone. We have yet to hear about the specs or performance, so all we have to critique at this point is AESTHETICS. geez would everyone get over it and stop defending this phone. of course it could change, and some of us are hoping it does and that is all.

I could do without a spring loaded slide, otherwise, it looks nice.

Damn, all the specs on the new android phones put both iPhones to shame. Apple better have something good planned for next year as this doesn’t even show the upcoming phones with the snapdragon chipsets! :P

  • thedeadbaby

*sigh* I wish they would have at least made this look as good as the cliq. This is horrible looking. Bring on that VZW Pre!

  • LovingDroid

Has anyone heard anything else about the Droid’s keyboard? I have an LG enV and the keyboard on that has been great. I’m hoping the Droid’s keyboard is similar.

  • drasticp

HTC Desire. That’s all i have to say.

you are on my point, thanks

  • Aelanor

    It’s simple…

I’m buying the droid for myself the day it’s out.
I’m buying Calgary for my niece and nephew the day it’s out.
I’ll decide what to give my brother when I play with the droid… or I’ll get a Calgary for me and give him my droid!

    Wtg Moto!

@Rodney, you should be able to opt out of the Social integration features such as Facebook, etc.

BG has tweeted that its likely the keyboard will not change any further. This info isn’t entirely concrete yet though. They apparently intended the two blank keys for symmetry.

    last was to @LovingDroid
    stupid mouse!

You can just not link the account. It’s completely customizable.

Hey, i’m just glad i can get a Droid for me and this for my wife and teenager. my wife isn’t as concerned about OS and i’ve taught my son well about Linux. this way 3 more android devices are in use! Thanks BGR, now im not worried about working a 2nd job to switch my house to Android.

  • trevor

Great – I REALLY want the Droid but I grew up in Calgary… Now what do I do???

  • ChadL

Lol that was my first though also!
    LOL the Moto-slide

  • Paul

    Yeap, ugly as hell.

def. looking entry level. i’m waiting for the ‘real’ droid :)

  • Ha.

Am I the only one who this this LOOKS loads better than the Droid (which basically looks like a circa 1969 Star Trek Comm device)? I’m dissappointed that this is slated to be the entry level and anyone wanting any sort of power is going to be stuck with that brass accented mini-brick. :(

    • David

yeah, agree with you this phone looks amazing compared to the droid.

  • nate

what an ugly cheap looking phone…the other one is ugly too..

  • jpjr

    Nice phone not bad.

  • Drew

Damn, I don’t mind the branding of phones with the manufacturer OF the phone per se but I get sick and tired of the carrier “whore” labeling. Verizon on the front. Verizon on the back?? Seriously!!!!

  • Chris

Has any more info come out about this yet. Do you know what processor it has? The size of the screen it appears considerably smaller but is it at least 3.2″ with at least a 528mHz? and will it keep that keyboard? That is the keyboard I wish the droid has but I bet this will be more the price point I wish the Droid had too.

  • http://tiyoo.com Fetchblog

I know that the Droid is going to have multi-touch and its also going to have tethering capabilities (you can use it as an aircard for the internet)

    http://fakekiwi.com/technology/motorola-droid-has-multi-touch/

    http://fakekiwi.com/technology/can-you-believe-it-tethering-for-the-droid/

Check them out because I know im getting excited about the Droid…that new commercial is really cool and I wonder if they are going to have like a 5 part series or something. I think that would be baller.

    • cawpin

Fetchblog, stop spamming your website. Of course the Droid has tethering, there’s now way for Verizon to prevent it since it’s an open platform. The multi-touch thing has been documented before as well.

More layoffs at the Circle M. Apparently someone thinks the new phones will flop more than Dolly Parton jogging

  • TB

Does anyone know, or can they tell whether this phone will be smaller than the Droid? Wikipedia says it’s the same size, which I don’t think is correct…

  • aasdfghjkl

uummm… whats up with the little screen and no flash whats next gosh

  • squijee

when is this phone coming out?
