EyeTV iPhone app has backdoor built-in, allows streaming over 3G

General

EyeTV-3G-2

Looks like EyeTV pulled a fast one on the quality assurance peeps in Cupertino. Our friends from Electricpig in the UK are reporting a quick and easy workaround that allows the EyeTV app to stream media over 3G on the iPhone.

“Tap the OK button, and the app will act as if it can’t receive broadcasts. However, tap the text of the warning message instead, and the Eye TV app will stream live TV over a 3G connection.”

Doesn’t seem like Elgato was trying very hard to hide their little secret, and we’re fairly certain Apple isn’t going to find it very funny. Will Apple go all Google Voice and pull every media streaming app in their catalog? Probably not — however we’re thinking that this particular version of EyeTV isn’t long for the AppStore.

Thanks, James!

Why get this app when tv.com has a free app that will stream shows over 3G and wi-fi and the NBC.com site you can find on Safari can as well.

Heard about this last month when it was released. BGR is loosing its touch ;)

Confirmed! Seems to be a “bug” more than a back door. For example, you can t change channels and keep viewing live tv over 3G. To change the channel you would have to quit the app and then re-open it and choose the new channel you want and do the procedure again.

And the performance was not that great. Lots of buffering…

Everyone keeps talking about Apple blocking applications. Who cares? The iPhone sucks. The AppStore sucks. All the Apple executive suck.

They tell the consumer how to think by giving the consumer only what they deem necessary. It’s disgusting to see people walk around with iPhones like they’re the best device around. Then again, people with iPhones aren’t the kind to surf the internet to catch the latest gadget news.

Because EyeTV is live TV, Tv.com isn’t.

I always have to wonder why someone would report something like this, thus alerting the people who are trying to keep us from enjoying such features! Seems like a shitty thing to do to me. And the old ‘it’s already been reported elsewhere” defense is bogus!

That’s the reason why I’m getting myself the Storm 2!!!!
