Samsung Moment headed to Sprint bringing more Android goodness for $179.99

General

It looks like Samsung is all aboard the Android bandwagon now with another slick device, this time coming to Sprint. After announcing the Behold II for T-Mobile, Samsung is making the Moment official. Like most Samsung devices as of late, this one looks a tad bland but some of the features certainly make up for it: 3.2″ AMOLED screen, slide out QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS and a 800MHz processor, which is huge! If anything, that processor is the biggest thing this device has going for it. Now if only Samsung will change things up in its design department, it could have some serious winners. Still, at $179.99 with a two-year contract, you could do worse. Also lastly, Samsung’s OS-agnostic TouchWiz UI isn’t on here. That’s going to make this most like the fastest Android handset on the planet.

I’m looking at this vs. the Sholes. The processor is ARM11 family (last generation) vs Cortex (current generation) and the resolution is 320×480 vs 854×480. Hope the Sholes specs are right because this phone looks pretty interesting.

Here’s the most important question I have, and I’m surprised nobody has touched on this:

It was rumored that the second android handset that would be released on Sprint would be a Samsung handset that had 3G and WiMAX, so where is that WiMAX android device???

@ kyle will you tell my touch pro it cant run 8 apps at once.. the stupid thing has been doing that since i got it

  • Kyle

Does it really run 8 applications at once? No. The only phones that can do that are the Hero and Cliq where you can have multiple widgets on the same screen.

Furthermore, I only made those statements in response to the comment which I referenced.

And I’m glad you’re enjoying your Windows Mobile phone.

Why not use our senses and try it out, the author even said mmv so let the one bad review sit. This and the Intrepid will speak loudly

Not everyone wants an iPhone though. At this point everyone is getting Android and AT&T has not announced anything. But now there are rumors of this Dell Android phone but it doesn’t look to good. I think they are to reliant on the iPhone and need to address all customers wants and needs.

I had heard something about this phone not CPU not having 3D acceleration, anyone know if this is true or not?

And any note of this phone will be as easily rooted and custom ROMs loaded like the HTC Android phones? Will Sense UI load on this? Seems like it has the CPU to actually run it.

What I want is ring tones. I don’t care if the processor is 500 mHz or 1 gig! I want ring tone and to take pictures to post them so everyone can see me!!! I want them to see me!!

You people argue over the stupidest things.

    @D.J.,

Wow, I really can’t type. I meant I had read something saying that the CPU that this phone is using doesn’t have any 3D or video acceleration meaning that videos, or nice graphics rich programs and UIs won’t run smoothly. Has anyone heard anything to confirm this?

Here’s the processor — it’s a Samsung implementation of the ARM11 architecture with 3D acceleration, so it should be able to render rich graphics and UI:

Nice. Just need to see how much RAM it has (I’m hoping for 256MB or more) and I’m sold. I was this close to getting the Hero, but was hesitating due to the scattered complaints of speed issues. This Samsung seems like it will not have that problem.

It would be great if Sense UI could be hacked on it. I would even pay for it, especially if it ran smoothly.

  • Anthony

I am pretty sure the RAM is 256MB on the Samsung Moment, that’s what most sites are saying.

I’m just glad for a processor that’s an upgrade from the last few Android phones to hit the US. It may not be Cortex, but 800MHz with 3D acceleration will easily make this the most graphic-intensive friendly Android handset yet, and will give this phone a great boost in the gaming department too…

it has built in hardware accelorator.

Sprint has the best smartphone lineup of all the carriers in the U.S.

  • darkpoet

Since the processor is 800mhz, this should run a lot smoother than HTC Android devices. Look forward to see reviews of this.

I kinda wanted this phone but the Moto Droid put this thing to shame. Now vzw has nav for free

    • Josh

vzw’s pricing will also be raping anyone willing to sign their life over for 1 or more years.
