Garmin-ASUS nuvifone G60 to hit AT&T next week, $299.99

Rumor

nuvifone-g60

Well boys and girls, it looks like the G60 might not be vaporware here in the US after all. An official announcement finally puts the G60 on AT&T store shelves this coming Sunday for $299.99 on a 2-year contract after a $100 mail-in rebate. That might seem a bit high at first, but considering there’s no subscription fee required for navigation it’s really not a bad deal. After all, it’ll cost you the same amount or more to score an iPhone 3GS with a solid non-subscription nav app. Regardless — the question of the hour is… After all this time, is anyone still interested in this puppy or has that ship already sailed?

There is fashionably late and there is Nuvifone late.

This seems like a decent phone although I certainly am not interested in picking one up. Virtually every other smartphone in the marketplace has a turn by turn based navigation program, be it subscription based or a one time fee. While Garmin does make great navigation units, I would imagine most smartphone users rely on other features such as messaging or multimedia or even internet browsing over turn by turn navigation. I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were Garmin. Honestly I don’t see why they didn’t develop apps for different mobile platforms and compete on the software instead of the hardware too….

$299? Is this going to suck my ….?

GPS’s have stone cold dropped to as low as $99! This is highway robbery.

There is a premium subscription fee of 5.99 per month “which includes traffic updates, white pages, weather, movie, local events and fuel price content”.

are the specs two years old?

I’ll be interested in one of these when they’re down to Free! I wanted one, like, two years ago, when, like, it was still cool to say, “Like”.

With yet another phone serving to cripple ATTWS’s already cracking network, I’ll pass.

I really like Garmin Mobile XT for my N82 and I prefer Garmin over any other GPS Nav system (except the built in $2000 one that was in my accord coupe). I am interested in what other features this phone can provide. Garmin Mobile XT only costs $99. Does this phone have hardware 3D acceleration? How about 3rd party app installation? That is what concerns me more than the Nave itself. Does the phone have text to speech and speech to text/voice activated navigation? Those features are the only things that are missing from Mobile XT. I hope this phone starts a trend that includes celluar chips in future GPS systems. My 205w would be even sweeter if I could call that number that came up in my search result instead of pulling out my phone……

    @Larry Love,

I must agree. The price is ridiculous. It’s not like it’s the first phone with navigation. Plus the price aligns it next to the iPhone with a TomTom navigator accessory kit and app. This handset might be better but, how many people serious about navigation will buy a phone. And if they will why wouldn’t they buy a phone that knowingly is more popular and can do more without the extra $6 a month. Their Sales people need to be set up for a drug screen!

That ship has sailed. In fact it’s sailed so far, it makes Columbus look like an amateur.

I have been playing with one for an hour now. It’s great!

I actually like the look of the icons. Had the 2G iPhone, wife has work 3G iPhone and as nice as it has been, it just didn’t *wow* me as a phone. I know there won’t be a “perfect” phone out there, but having a unit that will do proper GPS, will be nice. Was looking at getting the Palm Pre, but alas, no GSM. GSM is a must for me as friends/family in Europe and Africa.
Anyone know if the NuviPhone can be unlocked? Phoned ATT today and CSR hadn’t even heard of the phone (go figure!).
Will see if I can play around with one this weekend. Having GPS on the go, this might be what I am looking for. Yes, I have a TomTom unit, but there have been many times that I didn’t take it with me (not gonna leave it in the car!) and needing turn-by-turn directions would’ve been so helpful.
Any recommendations about how long to wait for the price to come down? My ATT contract finishes next week.

A friend, an engineer at Garmin, took one for a testdrive this afternoon and loved it. Looks like a pretty bare bones custom distro underneath but binary compatible with extracted debian arm packages. May be a good phone after all for people with an aversion to google and android. Can’t wait to test drive it myself soon.

This is a great brand, and phone, try it for an hour or so and see for yourself..However, here is where it falls short: AT&T..poor service, horrible rate plans, finally they can’t sell this phone to save their lives, because they are too lazy to learn about this product. Trust me I know this, because I went into a store and they didn’t have a clue. Note to GARMIN…SELL IT UNLOCKED ON YOUR SITE..!!! I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE IT AND WOULD BUY IT TODAY IF AVAILABLE IN THIS FASHION. I would use it on T-Mobile immediately if I could. Please listen and sell it this way, UNLOCKED IN NORTH AMERICA. THANK YOU…

if you have had an ATT contract for a while, they should unlock it for you if you tell them you are going overseas. I phone ATT CS and asked if I could get it unlocked if I purchased the phone and they said it is dependent on how long you have ha d a contract with ATT and not how long you have had the phone. Hopefully someone can verify this is indeed true and not another “empty promise from an unknowledgable CSR”. I have had ATT unlock previous phones (Treo) when traveling overseas, so hopefully this unit won’t be any different.

  • Piero

Well… I COULD be interested, but ONLY if unlocked.
    NEVER buy a locked phone.
