Motorola Sholes passes the FCC with EV-DO and Wi-Fi on board

News

If you’re a Verizon fan and a lover of all things Android, you were probably pretty upset earlier this month when Motorola’s Android event came and went with nary a peep about the Sholes. Don’t fret however, as relief is seemingly on the way soon enough — Motorola’s imminent second Android phone has just passed through the FCC. Pics, diagrams, manuals and pretty much all of the other goodies we typically see in an FCC filing have been withheld at the behest of Motorola (and presumably Verizon) but it’s not as if we don’t already know exactly what were dealing with here. As for when we can expect to see the Sholes hit store shelves across the nation, the latest rumor has it coming sometime next month just in time to show Sprint and its chinless Hero who the nation’s largest wireless carrier is. So what say you Android fans — Hero or Sholes?

Love the look of this phone and I hope they keep the red D pad. Gives it a sharp look. Right now I am between this and the Omnia 2

There is no Moto Blur on this phone. Here are the specs (supposively)

I hope Sonya is correct about the lack of Moto Blue that it stays that way. This seems like a top-of-the-line phone, for serious business and tech-junkies. From what I’ve seen of Moto Blur, it looks like a UI for teeny-boppers.
I can’t say the lack of Moto Blur surprises me though. Rumors on the internets have this phone being the first phone to feature Android 2.0. If this is true, I can’t imagine that Google would want the first phone to feature the new version of Android to be something other than a “Google Experience” phone.
On a rather unrelated note, if it IS a Google Experience phone, and at the risk of being mildly hypocritical after blasting teeny-boppers…I really hope it has that little Android on it somewhere. I love that little dude.

Ok, well what are the specs for the Sholes then? Processor speed is most important to me. It has to have a fast processor so it can keep up with the pack. I’m thinking 600Mhz or more should do it.

    @Sonya

This is very close to the one I got my hands on, but you’re right, often small mechanical changes or different materials are used in the final production model, based of feedback from the prototypes. Often, the exterior color changes or texture is added to the housing.

It going to be a good phone. But there are a lot of good phones out there. Its going to be the applications that will be the make or break.

Look at iPhone, very mediocre HW specs, but a great UI and a ton of apps. Can’t argue with that formula for success.

My experience use Motorola A3100 and HTC Touch HD with same processor 528 Mhz, mostly same feature and OS Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. Motorola A3100 is the winner for fast work, touchscreen so sensitive, and the more important is the price 2 or 3 times more cheap than HTC Touch HD.

Motorola Sholes have “Native support for OpenGL ES 2.0 + hardware acceleration from the PowerVR SGX 530 = mobile gaming device more powerful than a Sony PSP or Nintendo DSi.”

    @ Mike

I couldn’t agree more. Like I said in another post if a phone had a Tegra processor and 3 GB of RAM, 12 MP camera with flash, that still doesn’t mean it will sell like crazy. Obviously people want a nice looking phone, smooth UI, ease of use, and an app store. Not to mention marketing has really helped the iPhone. I think the Sholes will be big though in the app department since it has what it takes to potentially replace your PSP.

Last I heard it’s on tract for a mid October release but this could change at any point in time.

This Sholes appears for right handed people. If this thought is correct then this “Beast” is for one to get.

Those are some impressive specs. I believe with those specs and it running Android 1.6 this could be a success due to the Android Market. I feel this is going to be better than the HTC Hero on Sprint but I really hope they release this sooner than later. I would like to see an October release so it can compete with the Hero.

BTW, are you a rep in a retail Verizon store?

It is either the BlackBerry Storm 2 or this for me. Not so sure if I should trust Motorola at the moment though… I’ll have to think about this one.

  • cscoot03

Any opinion between the Storm 2, Diamond 2 or Sholes?

  • Sonya

    @ Mr. Hi-Definition

It won’t run 1.6. It will run 2.0 Eclair. This will include Multitouch. The only thing the Hero has that is different is Sense UI which I might add is very nice looking. The Tao will be a more advanced Android phone than any other on the market. The marketplace is full of free apps. I doubt anyone will be disappointed. The Storm 2 and this are very different. It’s a completely different OS. I currently have the Storm and I am jumping to the Tao come release.

BTW this is a video of the Tao running 1.6. But it WILL run 2.0 when released. It is hidden of course, but it is the Tao.

I don’t work for Verizon, just know someone that works higher up for Verizon.

  • cscoot03

@Sonya, of all soon arriving, you seem to suggest the Tao, am I correct? Regardless the D2 & Storm2 ???
