30 new Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets from 15 manufacturers by year’s end?

Rumor

windows-phone-parade

Windows Mobile fans take note — 30 new handsets powered by your mobile OS of choice will supposedly be debuting before you again sing a drunken version of Auld Lang Syne. Benjamin Tan, senior director of the GCR Mobile Team Unit at Microsoft China, let loose the rumor that an avalanche of new Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets from HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Acer, Toshiba, HP and more will be released in the waning months of 2009. Carriers who have jumped on board this Window Mobile bonanza include AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMO, Softbank Mobile,  SKT, Telstra and Telus. Bottom line: no matter where you are located or what you prefer in a smartphone, there will apparently be a Windows Phone to suit your needs in 2009.

    Is Winmobile 6.5 going to suck as much as every other incarnation of WinMo?

    Microsoft is one of the world’s richest companies and it still can’t produce a touch UI that works and looks as good as Iphone’s UI.

    Lame

    ms has enough money and lots of smart developers. they just dont have the interest in developing a better mobile os. at least not now but itll change in the future

    @ Christopher Cox
    have u used the any of the latest WinMo phones. Please try the HTC touch Pro 2 . Works great depending on your openness to accept a new UI.
    Windows mobile has the best business applications software in the market but application pricing needs to cool down. For your information s60 and Windows Mobile give developers the most tools to get into the core mobile OS. Android and Palm are also great for hardcore developers.
    Iphone and Blackberry becomes a dumb smartphone when compared with the to other platforms. It’s a pity, the 2 least flexible mobile OS are gaining the biggest mindshare/marketshare in the US. Blackberry is great and became famous due to it’s messaging features. But the 1st gen Iphone was sold on hype,fashion and ifans only.
    Remember when Steve only allowed widgets on the phone and now u all like the stupid app store like it’s really the best out there.

    @ghime
    I still have my Tilt and try the new apps. No matter how hard HTC tries to cover up winmo. It does not change the fact that all of the apps look extremely outdated and feel clunky. Maybe you have never really used another smartphone?

    On the iPhone, my RDP client from WYSE is way better than any other RDP client I have EVER used for WinMo. I use it at work all the time. QuickOffice runs circles around what you get in Winmo. PocketMoney … the same one I have on WinMo is EXTREMELY outdated on that platform. The iPhone version is night and day. Email is far better on the iPhone as is web browsing. All of the productivity apps I use on iPhone trump what we get on Winmo. And surpasses them to a large degree.

    Tell me how iPhone is a dumbphone? It has productivity software from the leading developers and even big corporations like WYSE are throwing in their offerings which surpass what you get on Winmo. The ONLY argument to iphone being a dumbphone is multitasking. And you know what? That has never been the difference between dumbphone and smartphone.

    The Tilt’s an old model, try the Touch Pro 2. Have u tried the new Opera mini for web browsing. And i never mentioned Wm has the best looking UI either. I don’t mind the clunky UI on Wm and so do a lot of people.
    I also agree with you that some developers don’t give good UI and eye candy to their WM app … but weirdly charge 5-10 times more WM version then the iphone version.
    The Iphone has so much media attention and good customer base so it becomes a good business decision for developers to support it. Doesn’t mean it’s better than other mobile OS for “hardcore development”.
    Multi-tasking,keyboard and battery life are important for me that’s why my regular phone is still the e71. And for your info I do recommend people to buy the Iphone 3gs if they like it. I am not against any OS.

  • hi

    A UI evolution that runs deep is underway. I used WinMo 6.5 build # 23053 and saw UI changes that will inspire devs to do their thing. Developer support will not be an issue for the largest software company in the world.

    Ballmer, Gates (he is still Board Chair) & the highest level leaders in Microsoft still wait for trends to form before deciding to double down. That is the company’s M.O. and it’s a strategy that still works for them.

    Despite all the “sky is falling” talk, MS has done well -even while under the thumb of Govt Justice Depts. The consent decree expires this Nov. It will be interesting to see how competition reacts when MS is back to full strength.

    another day… another lack of android…

    @Ghime
    That really doesn’t matter. So trying a new model will somehow make all of the applications better and the overall interface less clunky? No matter how you cut and no matter how fast the device is. It is not going to change the fact that it is still WIndows Mobile. No matter how many changes HTC makes … when you drill down another level it is still going to be the same ugly WinMo. Using the Tilt vs the TP2 will not do anything to change that.

    @OSsucker,
    “How many OS’s have you folks created? Bych bych bych…go create your own.”

    That has got to be the DUMBEST thing anyone on here has EVER said.

    Person 1: I hate FORD cars. Their trucks are awesome.
    Person 2: Shut up have you ever made a truck? make your own.

    Person 1: I hate that song Living in the USA by Miley Cyrus.
    Person 2: Have you ever put out a record? Whine whine whine put one out.

    Person 1: Willy Wonka makes crap chocolate bars.
    Person 2: Have you ever stirred the chocolate river? Bych Bych Bych go hire an oompa loompa and mix your own.

    We don’t have to make something to know its crap. We know its crap because they obviously can’t do it better than everyone else.

  • Sucky Fanboy Says

    I just want to make this comment before any other fanboy can:

    All these phones are rip-offs. They are. Look, rounded corners, that’s totally ripped from the Motorola Cliq which in turn stole it from the iPhone. Rounded corners! Come on MS! You can do better! Why can’t you make your own corners? You suck!

  • VZWer

    @ SFS

    Are you serious? Why are you worried about rounded corners – that has got to the dumbest post here by a country mile.

  • Christopher Cox

    @VZWer: Wow somebody has a broken sarcasm detector.

  • Ghime

    “Using the Tilt vs the TP2 will not do anything to change that.”
    Please try otherwise you will not understand many people that like or are comfortable with WinMo. It’s an impressive device and deserves some respect.
    I would not have said this 2 years ago but in 2009 it’s true when I say WinMo phones are reliable, stable and has decent battery life.

  • GussieG

    It like WinMo. So Ferkin’ sue me. I’ve tried it all. I still like WinMo. IMHO the device can make you love or hate the OS. No one OS is the Best,..but any one who claims that WinMo is worst hasn’t used many different smartphones.

  • http://gallery.me.com/numetheus Christopher Cox

    @GussieG
    It’s not about its stability or reliability. It has to do with the fact that compared to the more modern mobile operating systems like iPhone, Android, and WebOS … WinMo apps look and feel extremely outdated. I have seen the new touch-flo work on a real TP2. It does not change that the underlying framework is the same. Using WinMo apps vs one of the modern systems is like going back to my computer running Windows 3.11. Make Windows 3.1 stable and give it a nice fancy front end and it will do nothing to hide the fact the apps still feel like Win 3.1.

  • ghime

    “It’s not about its stability or reliability” ?
    So if WinMo makes itself full of eye candy(not icandy) and it’s UI better(maybe zune UI) would you buy it? We’ll have to wait and see :-) .
    The Touch Pro 2 is excellent for it’s business function. Hardly any blog editor can deny giving respect to the TP2.
    No phone is excellent and people choose the phones they like. I have mentioned before that “I do recommend people buy the Iphone 3gs if they like it” .

  • Ghime

    “modern mobile operating systems like iPhone, Android, and WebOS”. I am sure u know Unix and Linux OS are not exactly modern OS . Please Google it up or u could Bing it up.

  • Christopher Cox

    @Ghime
    I don’t know why that was brought up but ok. When people refer to the a Unix like OS you refer to just the command line. Since we are talking about graphical interfaces you are comparing to window managers in Linux. And yes, they Re modern and Microsoft has done a lot of copying of them lately. Take a look at the new KDE. Gnome is modern as well. Lots of the conventions used in Windows Vista and 7 like that side bar are direct copies of dock apps used in Linux for a very long time. KDE Plasma with Compiz makes Windows 7 already look outdated.

    Microsoft is a company that feels they don’t have to innovate because of their market stance … But more and more that is changing. Look at Internet explorer. Same old tired browser that is still not standards compliant. HTML5 nowhere to be seen there while everyone else has moved ahead of them. I remember a time when it was IE or bust. Now, unless you are a company locked down to IE most use something else.

    Microsoft is slipping with everything and Winmo is no exception. Even Balmer admits Microsoft screwed up with windows mobile. If their own CEO admits they screwed up … That invalidates everyone defending it IMHO.

    I’ve been very happy with my HTC Touch Pro2 and I’m looking forward to all the new phones.
