AT&T reportedly soft launching femtocells next week

Rumor

It looks like folks with lousy AT&T coverage may get some relief soon, as a new report suggests that AT&T is readying a soft launch of its 3G femtocell product dubbed the Microcell. The launch will target select markets including including Atlanta, San Antonio, Seattle and possibly one or more cities in North Carolina. AT&T is a bit late to the party considering how long ago these puppies popped up in its system, but better late than never we suppose. The soft launch is expected to begin next week with nationwide launch to follow some time before the end of the year.

Release it everywhere damn it. I want to get rid of the landline in the house. Argh.

Well if it’s cheaper than my $2.99 skype subscription on my iphone, bring it on, if not i called it DOA.

I’m in SA and I’m not sure if it’s been rolled out yet, but there has been an improvement in reception. I’m in a tough area and the 3G just went up to almost full bars. VZW carries two bars, and Sprint doesn’t have reception at all. Interesting…

It took a while because rumor has it, it’s going to be head and shoulders better than the competition. For example… allow a 3g simulateneous voice/data connection

WTF? Portland and Austin were fucked up before those cities with the 850 overlay screw up?

ATTWS, release the goddamn thing already – nationwide.

  • bluehorseshoe

Austin needs it real bad. Totally messed up there. SA was only selected because of its previous HQ location and remaining infrastructure to support the quick test and roll-out.

ATT beat Sprint to the 3G femtocell punch. Now will they charge monthly like Sprint for usage and an unlimited option like Sprint or will they have no monthly charge or unlimited option and have a really high out the door charge like vzw

No other carrier treats NC like AT

    @Don Louie Cantone

Sprint gave me my FEMTOCELL for free and dosnt charge me a monthly fee!

    What are you talking about?

So if these things go on eBay and I was to buy one (before AT&T started selling them here) would it work in my market here in the Baltimore, Md. area or does AT&T have to unlock these puppies on their end? I must admit, I want this to get rid of my landline. I have OK service in most of my house, but there are parts that I just don’t get squat. I must say, since AT&T went 3G in my area, their service has been nothing but superb. I feel sorry for you folks in NYC and California.

Under regular circumstances Sprint charges $100 for the Airave, $5/month for better coverage and $10 per month for unlimited individual while $20 rep month for fams. Verizon charges $250 with no monthly charge or unlimited option.

North Carolina on 9/20, if you’re interested. Not sure the city but i’d hazard a guess and say say Charlotte…..

were testing them in South Carolina also. we have a training class on them next week.

My AT&T experience in Chicago area was terrible. Reception horrible, dropped calls, and terrible customer service. I asked them about this device a few weeks ago and they had no clue what I was talking about. They consider “moderate” coverage the ability to hold a garbled conversation for 50 seconds before the call drops. I will never go back to them.

  • deathdealer

I forgot to mention, when I got my final bill, they did not credit me on it for the time between when I canceled and the end of the billing cycle. I called “customer service” and spent 45 minutes explaining to the agent how the cell phone billing cycle works before she put me through to her manager that answered my question in a minute.

AT&T stores in Charlotte are confirming this.

The device launches Monday and will cost $150 (with no plan changes). Additionally, you can add an unlimited calling plan for families which is $20 per month, and get a $100 mail in rebate making the cost of the microcell only $50. I believe there is also an individual unlimited calling option, but I did not ask my store what it was.

    Basically:
    Device without unlimited calling: $150
Device with unlimited calling for families: $50 + $20 per month.

Looks to be the best price for the device but the unlimited option is too much
