Rogers’ BlackBerry Curve 8520 comes out of hiding

We recently told you that both the Curve 8520 and the Bold 9700 were entered in Rogers’ upgrade system, and now the former can finally be found in its natural habitat — and by natural habitat, we mean leaked shots on BGR. Currently running OS 4.6.1.274, the Rogers 8520 appears to have escaped from one of RIM’s manufacturing plants without having been horribly disfigured by physical branding. We think it would be foolish to assume this will be the case once the device launches, but at least there’s hope. You know the drill; hit the jump for a couple more pics.

Thanks, Guiscard!

    Ok Verizon unleash the 8530 c’mon

    So what?!
    Looks pretty much the same as 8510, other Curve models, and Bold series.
    Maybe some minor diffs in specs…
    IMHO, not a BIG news.
    More like free RIM commercial.

    Looks like all the other new berrys. I am waiting for something innovative from RIM.

    I believe this model is supposed to have a sensor instead of a track ball ~.^

    @SEO:

    The optical mouse is definitely a step up from the previous generation of BB, so I would consider that innovation… and a huge relief because, let’s be honest, the trackball sucks.

    Aside from that, I’m rating this as a Meh!
    It’s still EDGE, with no wifi or GPS. I wonder why RIM is wasting resources on this kind of device when everyone else has been doing 3G for at least 2 years.

    I love the Berry, but, like seeing a teenage offspring faceplant at a baseball game, I’m disappointed in it.

    Look at the top picture. RIM can’t even produce a phone that fully lights up all of the buttons when then back light is on.

    Hey ‘fisty’… It does have wifi,
    and its a CURVE.
    If it had 3G, then it’d be a BOLD!!!
    Think before u post.
    Otherwise be content to look like a
    dumbass when u post something
    like that.

    @ kyle

    What? Your post makes no sense.

    There’s nothing wrong with lighting on BlackBerrys. Dope.

    Wow..just, wow. Talk about thinking before posting. I sure hope you were trying to be funny, because the BB8330 is a 3G CURVE, and more are on the way.

  • blah

    This POC isn’t worth more than $49.

    No 3G? No GPS? Crappy browser? You’d think this was 1999 and not 2009.

  • Kyle

    @TechnoBeaver

    My post makes perfect sense, and is in plain english as well.

    As you can see from the picture above, the Call, End, Back, and Menu (BlackBerry) buttons are not fully lit.

    Additionally, for $129, which is the cost of the Curve 8520, you get a phone without 3G and a pathetic 320 x 240 screen.

    The Pixi is going to debut with a 320 x 400 screen and will only cost $99. You also get webOS. Sure, the name could use some work, but who purchases a phone for the name.

  • Fisty

    @jawbreaker604:

    Ok, it does have wifi, thank you for correcting me on that. I was under the impression it didn’t have it.

    That being said, you missed my point about EDGE/3G completely. I know it’s a Curve. I’m wondering why even bother developping an EDGE-only device in 2009, while even the crappiest of non-RIM PDA’s are on 3G.

    I’m sorry my point went completely over your head. I’ll try to use smaller words next time.
