BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Curve 8520 show up in Rogers’ upgrade system

Exclusive

Get ready, BlackBerry adoring Canadians, because both the Bold 9700 and Curve 8520 have popped up in Rogers’ upgrade system. There’s no official word yet on when we’ll see both devices launch, although the smart money is that the Curve will come sometime in early October followed by the Bold in late October (this could change at any moment). As for how much they’ll run for is even more of a guessing game, but we would imagine the Curve will be heavily discounted (likely under $100) while the Bold should go for around the same price as the Bold 9000 which should go down in price. Good stuff. Hit the jump for some larger pics.

Thanks, ILLIONAIRE!

I hope you Canadians get the 9700 SOON! As in the past I will pay to get a unlocked ROgers units for use on AT&T. If you want to make some money ggg5gebhardt@aol.com is my address when you have one for sale!

When is ATT going to get the 9700? My 9000 is in need of a replacement.

I’m excited for the 9700. RIM has pushed out a lot of similar devices over the last year, and yeah, I’m a little worried about them “baby stepping” themselves to oblivion…but for what it is – a modest upgrade from last year’s Bold and (confusingly named) Curve 8900 – it’s good. Now if only they’d roll the Tour into it, as well, we’ll be back to having one high-end BlackBerry brand rather than three nearly identical ones.

    WACKBERRY…..yawn

  • tech junkie for life

Tour with Wifi so I’m sticking with my Bold unless I get some HSDPA 7.2 love before the end of next year.

    Still doesn’t phase me … I’m waiting for that 9900 Pluto <3

RIM needs a brand new OS…. RIM, stop releasing a new handset every-other week and start to work in a new OS….from scratch

  • Mog

Just me: it’s not just you. BGR has already told us that BB OS 5 isn’t going to be that big of an upgrade, despite hitting the big 5.0. I think they’re setting themselves up for a backlash just by naming it that, to be honest…if I were RIM I would rename OS 5 to OS 4.8 just to keep expectations in check.

They have a marketing-approved reason to change the number, too – OS 5 works with BES 2.8, so if they changed OS 5 to OS 4.8 they could just say it’s because they wanted to keep the version numbers in sync. OS 4.9 could then be the touchable Storm 9550 version and then OS 5 could be the big upgrade that has to be coming, with the purchase of Torch and the “Magnum.” Right?

Typed this on an iPhone…wish I could have typed it on a more modern BlackBerry. Make it happen, RIM! I know you read BGR :-P

    hope AT&T versions come soon

The 9700 will be my next SmartPhone.. :-) . The Tour does not do it for me. No WiFi..?!? Hopefully KPN in The Netherlands will adapt ASAP!

    Ciao,

PS: Typed this from my BOLD (5.0.0.190)

I like the 9700, but the OS seems so dated compared to WebOS and they still don’t have a decent browser. I think we are still a year away from a decent browser on a BB.

Wow more of the same boring stuff, when will blackberry become innovative and make something different, overhaul the os so its in touch with the now, 7290 had the same look and feel just a crappy screen but much of the same 6 years ago. these os updates are more like patches then updates.

  • Coach Lon

Isn’t the 9700 (Onyx) going to be a Curve devise, rather than a Bold 2?

  • M to the K

OMG! It has a track pad, a tiny bit more memory, and it’s thinner! That totally justifies $300+contract extension. Another one of RIM’s paltry offerings… I’m about ready to chuck my Bold and get an iPhone. Never thought I’d say that, but I can’t stand waiting for RIM to get their hardware and software up to snuff.

  • Cam

The tour 2 is coming out code name Essex and it has wifi and an optical track pad

  • Jim

you realize it has a full hardware revision with a faster processor. Better form factor as well.

Gotta remeber that not all upgrades are physical in appearance.

Also it will come preloaded with os 5.0

I think I will always be a loyal BlackBerry fan, except if they fall behind and that loyalty turns to just respect for past accomplishments (as in Motorola). I realize that the rather minimal upgrades are business decisions, but at the same time I am definitely finding myself wanting more from RIM… Obviously an OS revamp being one aspect. RIM needs to make sure they don’t upset the balance between profits, sales, and pure product innovation. I really hope the innovation doesn’t lag behind, because if it does, I believe declining sales will follow (referring to non-corporate of course). Those are sales that RIM has worked hard when they ventured into that market, they certainly earned them. I’d hate to see RIM lose all that they already have, which is nearly everything at this point.

By the way, I don’t think I’ll be upgrading my 9000 to the 9700, simply because it doesn’t make sense to me in terms of cost-benefit. Yet if I had an extra $300 to shell out, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

  • guy

Bell mobility will launch the bb 9700 on their new hspa network !

  • M to the K

@ Jim, the 9700 supposedly has the same processor as the 9000, so I’m not sure how this constitutes a huge change. The OS is still a shit pile, with few good free apps and tons of leaking memory. No one wants to design apps for this phone and it shows in the paltry offerings in App World. Two words: iphone Skype. Nuff said.

Hmmmm. I work for rogers, and unless they have changed our systems in the last few hours, I would have to call this screen shot bogus.

Salescentral anyone? (I would have put more effort into creating this image), Vision 21 doesnt look like this either. What gives?

  • Homestar726

Sorry, quick addition to the above mentioned comment.

I have handled a real 8520, and have the photo to back it up. With branding (typical rogers bb theme) and all.

The 8520 is coming, but the 9700… Not yet. Sorry to burst the bubble.
