Motorola announces Motorola CLIQ for T-Mobile, DEXT for international carriers

moto-cliq

You might have recently heard Motorola had some sort of announcement to make… well, it’s all over now and we’re left with the Motorola CLIQ. It’s the much-awaited and much-needed refresh to the company’s mobile device portfolio and it’s rather interesting. Like we reported, much of the customizations to the Android OS fall under the UI name of MOTOBLUR and that’s going to give you more social networking integration, widgets, and other connectivity options than you can handle. It will also allow each user to “customize his/her mobile device experience.” As far as raw specs go, we’re pleasantly surprised to report a 5 megapixel camera with video recording, UMTS/HSDPA, Wi-Fi, QWERTY slide-out keyboard, 3.5mm headset jack and a bunch more. Stones left unturned? Is the screen capacitive (our hearts hope so and we’d assume so, just odd how it’s not mentioned) and is there multi-touch support. All in all, we can’t wait to get our hands on it.

    Hey Jenny who ever wants the TP2 and its winmo garbage don’t need your help deciding. U obviously have never tried using a g1 with with 4 or 5 widgets running in the background. The phone slows to a crawl because the processor can’t handle the strain. If widgets are a big part of the new ui then the processor should be a big issue.

    will the sholes have blur too?

    I really hope it does, but considering it’s the launch phone and flagship for android 2.0, would google want to make it a google experience device?

    The T-Mob phone I want is the N900. If I’m going to have to put up with T-Mob’s network, I don’t a glorified Sidekick. They give me a 2G SD card? Gosh, how generous. The N800 has 32 G built in, and a SD slot. 320X480? Try 800×480.

    Maybe VZW won’t completely cripple the Sholes and keep me as a customer. Very doubtful.

    @mistermix

    Amen.

    Nice phone but isn’t this what the HTC Hero already did? My friend has the Hero and it does a nice job on integrating facebook, twitter, etc in a very easy format.

    Moto is a little late to the game but they certainly did a good job.

    So going to get this and not the samsung galaxy this phone fits perfectly for what i want in a phone. The Hero is dope too but this is way cooler and has a keyboard. Android is a tech geeks dream come true!!

    Can someone from Boy Genius please verify the UMA capability of this phone? A lot of us have been foaming at the mouth waiting for a 3G and UMA phone, but the only place it’s said to have it is here. None of the spec sheets list it out, nor is it mentioned on the T-mobile website or Motorola’s website. If it can be confirmed, this phone could be a good alternative to waiting for the Blackberry 9700.

    Someone have a ballpark idea of when this is going to drop????

  • wallyson

    Man, I’m going to change my name around here to Weight Police. Again another heavy one. Definitely not a bad looking phone though but I’m also concerned about the processor speed.

    The Sholes will not have Blur. But I’m pretty sure someone will find a way to put it on there. At any rate this phone ran pretty decently with all the stuff it had going on.

    Is that the same hinge from the motorola sidekick slide that was discontinued??? awe shucks thats not looking good… That phone was DOA I hope this hinge is far superior! The phones OS Looks great love what they did with Android. And think that this and the Hero are “flagship” devices. I hope it adds the abality to add friends from the widget or apps so theres no logging into the site from the browser. and will video playback be possible from vids i upload to the mem card? ive yet to see a android device handle non streaming video. this is the phone that definately fits every one of my needs so im rooting that it performs well. any info yet on processor speed and internal memory size? Love that they added a camera button and a 3.5mm headset jack (c’mon mytouch & G1) but still what’s with this growing trend of no camera flash? Xenon flash was on the ZN8 why not this? And UMA is a dream come true for android im very pleased by what this phone offering and hope motorola dosent treat it like a trend and decide to not advance it and improve it over time much like a blackberry or sidekick do. Well there goes my rant for the year. Keep the great info coming BGR!!

  • toursux

    I believe apple started this dumb trend of no camera flash with the iphone.It seems like there trying save a bucks by leaving the flash out.

    Looks nice but i will stick to my Berry and Nokia!!!!!!

    Sent via Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

    @archboy

    A total of 4 existing handsets available across all U.S. carriers with an OS thats not even officially a year old.

    Yeah, Moto is SOOOOOOOOO late. They might as well put a gun to their head and give up now! lol

  • Peter G

    BGR what is the source of the UMA information? Wifi calling is essential for me and a dealbreaker if not available.

    It is not listed in any official specs from Moto or Tmo. Inquiring minds want to know!

  • Peter G

    I just ReRTFA and saw the UMA shout was removed.

    Too bad. I thought android was designed for us nerds in basements who don’t get cell service!

  • Ed

    WTF, still no UMA!!! I really wished someone else had a UMA android. I would buy my contract out and be gone. People just don’t know what it is and don’t really know they should have it otherwise they would hear our cries!!!!

  • Alan Franklin

    Listen up, T-Mobile! The moment an Android phone becomes available with UMA I will buy it to replace my Pearl 8120. UMA is indispensable, my wife’s MyTouch and our crappy 3G coverage in suburban Denver make that obvious.

    Please! UMA and Android! NOW! Every message board in the world has this complaint.

  • Crypto

    @Carig,

    Blur is a service running on servers, not the phone, IT IS NOT a UI.

    There are some widgets on the phone that are normal Android Applications which do not change the standard Google UI so the phone can still be an Android 2.0 (Eclair) Showcase phone an be a Google Experience.

    The Cliq does have WiFi, but it does not have UMA. Sorry.

  • kv66

    UMA..UMA…UMA…UMA…Now!!!!!
    Are you listening T-Mo????
    No UMA is a non-starter!!!!

  • Allyant

    T-Mo I’m waiting for a UMA phone too. Come on already. It is a must for me too.

  • angel

    I love the Cliq. I was actually in the market for a Blackberry Curve, but saw that it didn’t look as attractive up close as it did on the t-mobile website. Similarly, I didn’t think the Cliq was attractive on the website but looked fabulous up close. It doesn’t look or feel like a calculator, I love the textured keyboard, screen size, widgets, and the numerous apps

    What bothers me about the Cliq is that there is no flash for the camera. I thought with newer phones, flashes came standard. I will have this phone for two years, and I don’t like the idea of having a flashless camera for that long unless there is a way I can have a flash installed. I don’t want to just take pictures in the daytime. Is there a way I can have a flash installed for this phone, and how much will it cost? I think the Cliq will even have a leg up on the iPhone if they all came with flashes
