Sprint and HTC officially announce the HTC Hero; $179.99 on October 11th

General

Well, so much for all that. It turns out the stars were apparently aligned and Sprint’s HTC Hero will indeed be launching on October 11th. Sprint fans rejoice! The nation’s number three wireless carrier’s first Android-powered handset is a doozy — definitely the sexiest official Android handset to date. You already know everything there is to know about the Hero, and if you don’t then you clearly weren’t paying attention to our extensive review. The most important (and obvious) thing to note regarding Sprint’s version is the look; as with HTC’s various versions of the Snap, the Hero has been completely restyled for Sprint. Gone are the hard lines and prominent chin, having been replaced by rounded corners and, well, a baby chin. To be completely honest, we’re really digging both designs. The Hero will launch for Sprint on October 11th, as mentioned above, for $179.99 on a 2-year contract after rebate. An unlimited data plan will be required and Sprint’s Everything Data plans start at $69.99 per month for 450 peak minutes and the works.

exactly re: point #5. people will bitch when they don’t like something. when a company proactively responds to it, they’ll find something else to bitch about. can’t make everyone happy.

YES BGR fix the commenting.. If it wasnt for the duplicate comment catcher i would have stopped commenting by now!!

And this looks real no REAL good.. Its gonna be hard to justify paying double for a touch pro2.. Wm had better get its prices in line.. Id take a tp2 over a tour, hero, pre, iphone, etc etc but paying double or close to it.. Hmm I dont know

    @ johny

finally someone sees it my way….
i personally love the changes to the US version… its everything people have been asking for…. 3.5mmjack, fingerprint resistant screen, no chin, sense ui (with optimizations to improve lag), backlite trackball, multi-touch, flash, HUGE battery (1500, great price…. and so on…… AMAZING!!!!!

    1. Palm Pre – best Palm phone on market — That does not say much. Does it.
    2. Blackberry Tour – best Blackberry on market– AT&T has Bold and Verizon has Tour. T-Mobile has 8900 and will have Driftwood.
    3. HTC Hero – best Android phone on market– May be . Wait till we see Motorola Sholes, HTC’s Android for AT&T and Verizon and T-mobile’s upcoming Android phones. Things might be much different by the time Sprint releases their first Android phone.
    4. HTC Touch Pro 2 – best Windows Mobile phone on market- T-Mobile released it weeks ago.
    5. Instinct HD – best ‘dumbphone’ on market (tied with LG EnV Touch)– Wow. I am just speechless. Just check AT&T and Verizon’s website to see their dumb phone offerings. You will get a good picture.

  • joethestone23

    @Mankato

um…I’m just saying Sprint has a sweet lineup and the most diverse lineup, of cell phones on the market –

As far as the “dumbphone” comment – yeah, I have seen Verizon and AT&T’s offerings, and AT&T has SHIT…and verizon has SHIT too except for the EnV Touch. Where’s your argument?

  • joethestone23

    @Mankato

um…I’m just saying Sprint has a sweet lineup and the most diverse lineup, of cell phones on the market – I understand that some of the other carriers have these phones – but Sprint’s lineup is diverse, stellar, and partly exclusive. Nice to see Sprint doing something good for their customers.

    As for your comments

    1. What’s with the Pre hate? Use the phone for longer than a minute and you’ll love it
    2. So? Just saying Sprint’s got it…
    3. HTC Hero – HTC has proven they can make android phones – the Hero is amazing (yes, I’ve used one actually). Motorola almost destroyed the sidekick series (anyone remember the shitass sidekick slide?). We’ve seen T-Mo’s Android phones (G1 and myTouch…ok?), and what are you talking about? Since when has it even been rumored that AT&T will get an Android phone?
    4. EVERYONE will have the Touch Pro 2 – I’m just saying Sprint’s got it too…and btw if you want to compare… Sprint’s version is far superior for the simple fact that it has a 3.5mm headphone jack while the T-Mo version doesnt
    5. As far as the “dumbphone” comment – yeah, I have seen Verizon and AT&T’s offerings, and AT&T has SHIT…and verizon has SHIT too except for the EnV Touch. Where’s your argument? What phones your talking about? LG hasn’t made a creative phone since the vx9800 – the EnV Touch just perfects their tired concepts. AT&T? The quickfire – oh yeah – real good…

WinMo just took another step back and it already resides at the back of the pack. SPRINT definitely has a clear and concise plan to gain and retain market share with its diverse line up of handsets. And this just the beginning as the EOS and TP are also in route for our consumption. ATT and Verizon look out!! It sure is nice to be a proud S|P Alumni Member(SPRINT PREMIERE for the uninitiated). Thanks to the New Phone every year deal, and all the new phones in the pipeline, I’ll continue to Try/Buy/Use/Sell a Phone each and every year. Looks like the Good Ol’Droid will be my next cop.

  • Cliff

I would love to get this phone. Sadly the coverage for Sprint in my area is dead last among the other 3. If it wasn’t for that, I’d jump on this in a heartbeat.

best news ever… android on sprint

worst news ever… wont work for SERO

  • Vince Lawry

I wish SERO stop crying, it does say unlimited data plan or Everything is required so you all might be able to get by. At least Sprint still has an unlimited data plan, unlike vzw, while only requiring a plan for one brand of “enhanced phone”

  • The Truth

    @ Vince Lawry

What are you talking about? VZ has an unlimited data plan too. How do I know? I have one and it’s not on “one brand of ‘enhanced phone’”.

    Seriously?

  • Don Louie Cantone

i think buddy was refering to this: http://www.bgr.com/2009/08/31/verizon-enhanced-multia-phones-to-require-data-plans-death-of-vpak-and-more/#comments so in a few days there won’t be an unlimited data option with vzw unless you have a bundle (connect or premium) and sprint has 3 cheap unlimited data packs and 3 cheap unlimited bundles, 6 counting the fam plans.

  • http://www.Facebook.comcomediananthonythomas Mr. Thomas

Does it have a flash and a dedicated camera button? How much memory is dedicated for apps? I’m very excited about this phone!! I’m a T-Mobile subscriber and I have no contract I don’t want to leave T-mobile but this can make it possible.

  • Confused

This phone is almost an exact copy of the MyTouch. The only diffrence is the Sense UI which you can load on the MyTouch if you want….

  • The Truth

    @ Don Louie Cantone

Oh so in other words, it doesn’t affect smartphones which fall into a different category than “enhanced media phone”

    As per the article:
“…the most notable change being the introduction of a new device class: the “Enhanced Multimedia Phone”. To fall into this new category, a handset must have an HTML Web browser, EV-DO Rev. A, a QWERTY keypad and it must launch on or after September 8th; making the Samsung Rogue VZW’s first handset to meet the criteria.”

    and

“Enhanced Multimedia Phones might not be smartphones but they will require a data plan just like their big brothers and sisters.”

This, to me, sounds like the unlimited data plan is here to stay. VZ is only requiring these new media phones to have a data plan, just not an unlimited data plan.

  • Don Louie Cantone

The Truth, the only unlimited data vzw is offering, going foward, will be in bundles or if you have it grandfathered already otherwise you’ll have a 25 mb, 75 mb option and the unlimited bundles are the only unlimited option
