Nokia N97 Mini, X3 and X6 announced at Nokia World ’09

General

News flash: Nokia managed to keep a pair of handsets a secret leading up to official announcements at Nokia World! Alongside the oft-talked about N97 Mini, two previously unknown music-centric devices, the X3 and X6, became official — but we’ll get to them in a moment. The N97 Mini, as we’re sure most of you know by now, can be summed up pretty quickly: Slightly smaller than the N97, tilting 3.2-inch resistive touchscreen display, sliding QWERTY keypad, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and dual-LED flash, Wi-Fi, aGPS, 8GB of internal memory with microSDHC and UMTS/HSPA connectivity. Not great, not bad, but we’re also not too sure exactly who would take it over the N97, which is already free on contract in many countries.

As we said before, the X6′s announcement came as a total surprise — one that is actually quite nice. It’s a full-touchscreen (capacitive) candy bar that can pump out tunes from its 32GB of internal memory for up to 35 hours. It runs S60 5th of course; shame it isn’t Maemo-powered. Beyond that you’re looking at a 5 megapixel camera with a Zeiss lens and a dual-LED flash and as far as connectivity goes, the X6 has that lovable trifecta of HSPA, Wi-Fi and aGPS. The X3 is the alphanumeric slidin’ baby cousin of X6 that runs on S40 and has a 2.2-inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, 46MB of internal memory, FM tuner and quad-band EDGE. Both the X3 and X6 will ship in Q4 for 115€ ($163 USD) and 450€ ($640 USD). As for the N97 Mini, it will be released next month for 450€ ($640 USD). Hit the jump for videos of each of these three handsets and let us know what you think.

Sorry I made a mistake… After paying AT&T $5.99 per month you can use your phone internationally. Depending where you are to price ranges from 99c to $3.49. So in the UK and some European countries it is 99c per minute but in Hong Kong and South Africa it is 1.69 and New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, China it is 1.99 and in Afganistan and Botstwana it is $4.99 a minute. Why do I bring it up… A subsidized iPhone cost me $329.00 plus changing fees and upgrades etc etc. So a total of $370 dive and taken some. The new Nokia N97 was $529.00

Last year in Dec I did a quick trip to Ireland. I took only the iPhone thinking the additional cost would not be great. After a week my total bill for phone calls and data usage in Ireland was over $500 dollars. That was after I paid the $5.99 for International calling and an additional $59.00 for International Data Roaming.

In March/April I spent 3 weeks in South Africa and 3 weeks in New Zealand with a couple of days in Hong Kong in between. I took the Nokia E90. In SA I rented a sim card and got a local number. The sim card included data access and a 1000 minutes a month. Total bill:$17:00
In Hong Kong had to buy a sim card which is valid for 2 years and includes a 1000 minutes and data usage. Total Cost: $15:00 and I still have time left for when I return as well as a Hong Kong telephone number I can give people :)
In NewZealand I bought another sim card it included 500 minutes and data. Total Cost $15.00
In the US I forwarded my cell phone to my VOIP line which in turn I forwarded to which ever number in which ever country I was at the time. And in case you don’t know in other countries you do not pay for incoming calls on cell phones like you do in the US.
So this is not about phones but a about cell phone company practices. Because of the limitation AT&T places on me when I use the iPhone outside the country I will choose not to upgrade to the iPhone 3Gs or what ever is the new thing in the future. It is not because the phone is bad but because the way AT&T locks it down. I like Nokia because they give me options and I can use AT&T or T-Mobile based on the service they provide not because they are the only people providing the phone that I want.

  • Nokia must do better

I cannot believe Nokia is being so stubborn about making such thick devices.

Nokia, what gives? The X6 if fugly as hell because of that alone.

Although the iPhone3G S is a very smart phone, it not intelligent enough to compete against the Nokia N97 Mini.

The Nokia N97 mini is like having a mini super computer on your pocket. The features of the Nokia N97 Mini are very impressive compared to the iPhone.
